I was on my front porch and spotted this turkey #vulture (Cathartes aura) soaring high overhead and started to take some photos of it when by chance this #jet suddenly passed through the frame. I live under an approach flight path to IAH so jets often pass in the skies above - fortunately we are far enough away from IAH that the jets are still at a high enough altitude that we don’t get much noise.

The Sky Keeper

During our morning walk, birds were scarce. I did manage to catch a sparrow of some sort, though I haven’t taken it off the camera yet. Yesterday, however, a turkey vulture—Cathartes aura—drifted overhead. I’ve captured many images of these birds over time. They’re plentiful around here, and in the air, they look magnificent—broad-winged, effortless, almost mythic in their glide.

#FindsFriday! One of the oldest known musical instruments in the world: a #Palaeolithic #flute made from a #vulture bone some 38,000 years ago! This is one of eight known flutes found on the Swabian Jura. The finds suggest that music played an important role in this region.
Found in the Hohle Fels cave near Schelklingen.

On display at Urgeschichtliches Museum Blaubeuren, one of our branch museums.
