I would like to do a TROM-Cast all about movies this week. To discuss about the present day movies, the popularity of these "things", and how could we do them better perhaps. To provide examples of educational movies and so on. Stay tuned. ;) I'll post about it these days if we decide. On another news, we had to cancel the recordings for TROM II for now. I hope to get back to that in a week or less. #tromlive

I've done some movie recommendations in the past, lol 😂. You can see them on #MovieRec. They were just for entertainment, so not many are "educational".

I'll just say that my views about movies and art in general have changed after watching the TROM documentary.

I still enjoy movies, series, music etc. But I acknowledge that art cannot be judged, and that its a subjective experience. So there are no shitty or great movies in real life.
in reply to Rokosun

I haven't done any movie recommendations for so long though. Maybe I'll start doing it again if people are interested 🤔
in reply to Rokosun

What if you participate to our next tromcast? :D
in reply to Tio

I don't know if I'll be able to watch it live. But if I do, I'll maybe come on the live chat (I assume its peertube comment section). Regardless, This would be a really interesting tromcast for me, later I'll ask any of my doubts here if I missed the live :)
in reply to Rokosun

You could also participate video/audio :) - the chat is mostly our Nextcloud live and public chat - when we do a tromcast now, we add it to tromsite.com/live and side to it is the live chat. Easy to participate ;) . We will make a poll about the date and share it publicly so you can add your name there if you can participate. I'd love to see new faces to tromcast!
in reply to Tio

I think I'll just stick with chat for now, just for the sake of anonymity 😄. Also, don't know if its just me, but I think I'm able to better express myself in written words than simply talking 🤔

I'm really glad you asked though, it feels great to be able to talk and interact with people/organizations that you admire and care for. Its the best thing about being on the fediverse.
in reply to Rokosun

I totally get you! I was doing a lot of online stuff since 2007 and never put my face or real name out there till 2018 when we started TROMcast. I never wanted that and I thought I can express myself better via text rather than talking. Now I feel very comfortable about being "on camera". So I get that you feel more comfortable to participate via chat that's why we have a chat ;).
in reply to Rokosun

It looks like friendica doesn't show my movie recommendations following the hashtag, you can look this link instead - https://fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/tagged/movierec

I'll just say that these are generally better than the chicken and monkey type movies, lol 😂. But they're still mainly for entertainment purposes, so I wouldn't really call them "educational".
in reply to Rokosun

Ok thanks ;) - I also highly recommend this book of ours https://www.tromsite.com/books/#flipbook-df_9908/1/ - The For Profit Entertainment

This one is very interesting and is made by @Dima who is a professional musician. So he knows a thing or two about the industry.

The point about trade-free movies. What we argue is that when there is an industry that makes movies to get something else in return (based on trades), be it money, attention or whatever, it tends to lean towards repetition, mindless entertainment, shocking content, and overall not original and well made stuff. And if you look overall at the movie industry (as we showcase in that book), that's really the case. "trade-free" movies, meaning movies made to inform, educate, entertain, are quite rare if any. So we can't really test/compare, but we can do that with documentaries as showcased in the Origin of Most Problems book, and there you can see a clear difference between documentaries made to make a profit (trade-based), and those who are not meant for that purpose specifically.
@Dima
in reply to Tio

Yeah I understand what you mean, and I said there that trade-free movies would be more truthful and original. But this is not what I was trying to explain there, I was trying to talk about the complex nature of art/entertainment in my follow up comments. But then I thought to not go too much into that, so I deleted my previous comment. I didn't knew you saw my comment already, lol 😂

Basically what I meant to say is that you cannot judge art based on how educational or realistic it is, cause its not made for that purpose. Movies are mostly made to entertain people, just like music, pictures, jokes, stories etc. Say if I wanted to watch a horror movie, then it's kinda expected that its gonna be fictional. I can enjoy watching a horror movie and still not believe in ghosts.
in reply to Rokosun

So even though we joke about chicken and monkey movies, it doesn't really make sense to judge art. Ironically, I learned that from the TROM documentary, lol 😂
in reply to Rokosun

Oh for sure is not like movies have to be factual. Not at all. But our point is that movies are mainly made "for profit" reasons. That's why you see dumb jokes, shocking content, explosions, so many remakes, and at times more money invested in advertising a movie than making it. I highly recommend that book of ours about entertainment as it goes in details about the topic.
in reply to Rokosun

Of course. Art is subjective. But the judgement about chicken vs monkey is that it is a "something thing" that excites people it seems (a lot of them), in a situation in which the reality discovered through science seems to be a second hand kind of reality compared to these silly movies; atoms, neutrinos, evolution, creatures upon creatures....and people get excited about these kind of things. Second, it is also about the fact that humans invest millions of dollars into these "art pieces" when the most expensive documentary clocks at about 7 million dollars (Planet earth). It says a lot about "priorities" in our society. And people seem to be fine with that.

In the end, I would argue that most movies nowadays are made to make some money out of them. Just like most stuff in our world. So it ends up low quality.
in reply to Tio

As a movie lover myself, I totally agree. Movies with high budgets are more cliché, and bad quality in general imo. The movies that get the most awards are usually the low budget ones. I'm an active movie watcher, so I spend a lot of time searching for a good movie to watch rather than passively watching anything that comes up. The whole reason I did movie recommendations is to help people find good movies to watch, cause the mainstream ones are not that good mostly.

in reply to Rokosun

Can you recommend me the best movie you've watched? :) - I am curious. I know these things are subjective but... I was such a huge movie fan, I had websites reviewing movies and recommending to people and all that. I was the movie-guy for many years. :D Then I divorced movies entirely and replaced them with documentaries and that opened my eyes very very wide.
in reply to Tio

People seem to be excited when a new high budget movies comes along. From my experience, they'll be less excited for such movies if they're actively watching movies and engage in criticism, but most people passively watch these things (mindless streaming).

I too wish more people were interested in topics like science, so we put more money on documentaries. One funny thing about it is that I think my interest for science came from the SciFi movies I've watched as a kid, lol 😂

You can't really blame people for these things either. Most people are tired from their busy lives and movies are a way for them to escape from that reality. I think this is the main reason people mindlessly watch movies, its really sad. Trade is again the cause for all these misery.

Very true!
in reply to Tio

I'll say that my interest for movies peaked quite recently, so I haven't watched most of the movies that are out there. Also, recently I started watching movies in foreign languages too. And because of the lockdown, I started watching series and documentaries as well. Yeah, I started watching documentaries cause I was bored during covid, lol 😂. I was always a nature lover, so I thought I could try out some nature documentaries. Planet earth blew my mind away ! 🤯

So maybe I too will lean towards documentaries more in the future, just like you.

I don't think I'll ever have a favourite movie, it just keeps changing as I watch more and more ones. Although there's a few I'd recommend you. I recently watched a lebanese movie called Capernaum, its one of the most realistic movies I've watched and it talks about real world issues like poverty, overpopulation etc. You might even add this movie to videoneat.
in reply to Rokosun

I found a link online to download this movie with subtitles - https://mega.nz/file/GY8GQK6D#Z5uDLxwXzjPWn2kBfNLGwOaw1L-HFPn_DUp0mGZxAe4

If I come across any movies like this, I'll let you know, so you can watch it and maybe add it to videoneat if you like.
in reply to Rokosun

However if you're looking for more entertaining movies for you to watch for yourself, my old recommendations are still good. I'll maybe start doing recommendations again, there's too much tech stuff in the fediverse and we need to engage in more diverse topics - this is one reason why I initially started it.
in reply to Rokosun

You asked me about the best (most enjoyed) movie I saw, I think it'd probably be "Breaking bad", but its a series not a movie. I only realized how short a movie is after watching series, the same with educational videos after watching documentaries. This is a very popular series, but I think it actually deserved it ! Its hard to keep things realistic and still be enjoyable and entertaining, and this series achieved that.
in reply to Rokosun

Thanks- I'll have a look. Btw if you want to find pretty much any movie or documentary for free use our search engine https://search.trom.tf/search?q=Capernaum&categories=files&language=en-US - magnets (bittorrent decentralized).
