But is not only poor people coming to “your tribe”, taking “your jobs” by working for less and in poorer conditions. The tourists are the other kinds who come to “your tribe”, not giving much of a shit about your culture and language, or even the environment. They come to “visit”, eat, have fun, take advantage of a tribe. Consumers, consuming, as we all are in this society. But also to take a break from their eternally-enslaved worker lives.

Is normal to be angry when you cannot even rent a place to live in since the rents are insanely expensive, all due to short term rentals for tourists. I know it very well. I lived for 15 years in a small coastal town 2h North of Barcelona. It is IMPOSSIBLE to rent long term here. It is all for tourists. I am not a Catalan, but I can see how such situations make us think of “us vs them” again, and play very well into the separation of people into groups, which will lead some towards nationalism, and politicians will take advantage of that.

Catalonia, like all of Spain, relies so much on tourism to make money. So weirdly enough, the industry is feeding a lot of Catalans in the process. They can hate on the tourists, but they also rely on them a lot. Same way that the Catalans take advantage of people like my father who are vulnerable, so they will pay them less and work them more. Just to make a profit.
