I know about "Delete and re-draft", but that will break all the replies and the entire thread along with it, including if there has been any favorites or boosts. I heard that mastodon developers had been working on an edit feature that would allow you to edit your post and fix typos and stuff without having to delete the post beforehand. Some fediverse platforms like #Friendica already supports edits, I just heard that mastodon will be supporting it soon.

The Ghost of Émilie reshared this.

I understand what you're saying, but online conversations doesn't have to be the same as talking to people IRL, editing and deleting posts are very useful to have even though you can't do the same when talking to someone.

Mastodon developers probably would've realized the usefulness of editing because they're trying to add the feature to mastodon now.

personally, and I'm not saying this is *right so everyone must be the same*, I think striving for the appearance of online perfection is problematic. it disassociates us from proud mistake-making humans and makes posts seem too clean. in short, I'm happy without an edit button..
but then I don't use Mastodon so whatever they decide doesn't bother me.

maybe I'm looking into it too much though 🀣

Yeah I know there are people who thinks like you, and its a valid point of view. For me personally it all changed when I started using matrix/element because that allowed me to edit my messages (unlike other messengers like whatsapp/signal). So after spending some time with these nice features now I can't live without it anymore πŸ˜‚

Maybe I'm kind of a perfectionist or maybe I have OCD, I dunno, but little typos on one of my messages annoy me to no end :blobcatgiggle:

BTW, here is an example of why editing is important - fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/10…
I don't want people to misunderstand that post and think I'm being rude, but currently the only way to edit that post is to "Delete and redraft" which would break the entire thread along with it.

When such subtle differences in text based communication can cause misunderstandings between people, having to correct your messages in future replies is messy and inefficient.

in reply to Rokosun

Thanks for the example, I don't really see how it makes a difference though - to me, the fact you replied correcting the misunderstanding in a polite way is much more effective than changing what you said and hoping nobody noticed...

anyway, let's just say here that we're both right and what either of us decide to do makes absolutely no difference to the other in any way πŸ˜† πŸ˜„ :blobcathug:

I think now it doesn't disappear anymore, mastodon now shows you a notification if a post has been edited. I heard mastodon is also trying to add edit functionality to their platform, so maybe these are just the early stages before they fully roll out that feature.
in reply to Xantulon

I'm talking about the new edit feature, its different from "Delete & Redraft" - fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/10…

Yes Tio, mastodon has an option to "Delete & Redraft", it basically just deletes the post and allows you to make changes and then create a new post. Here is a screenshot attached - mastodon.social/@Xantulon/1085…

Yes it was definitely not a replacement for actually edits, lol. I have actually asked about this feature not long since I started using mastodon - fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/10…

Anyway, I'm happy they're trying to add real edits this time :)

My apology would be something like "Sorry I didn't mean to be rude, I have edited the post above to make it more clear". I don't think this would confuse people at all, and mastodon even allows users to look at the history of an edited post so they can look at my old post if they want. Mastodon also gives people a notification about my edit if they have interacted with that post in any way.
