When is mastodon gonna have an edit feature ? I've been hearing about it for a while now, but I'm still unable to edit my posts.

?? I use it all the time. Click on the post's menu, select "Delete and re-draft" and make your fixes.
in reply to GoatsLive

I know about "Delete and re-draft", but that will break all the replies and the entire thread along with it, including if there has been any favorites or boosts. I heard that mastodon developers had been working on an edit feature that would allow you to edit your post and fix typos and stuff without having to delete the post beforehand. Some fediverse platforms like #Friendica already supports edits, I just heard that mastodon will be supporting it soon.

Editing is too hard to install in a federated system. It will stay "deleteand redraft".

Fediverse platforms like #Friendica has already supported editing for a long time now, mastodon is just late, haha 😄

embrace your mistakes. correct them via a reply if needs be. at the very worst, delete and redraft.
if you're speaking to somebody in person and you mis-speak, can you go back and change what you said?
in reply to Paul Wilde :blobcatnim_new: :dontpanic_nobg:

I understand what you're saying, but online conversations doesn't have to be the same as talking to people IRL, editing and deleting posts are very useful to have even though you can't do the same when talking to someone.

Mastodon developers probably would've realized the usefulness of editing because they're trying to add the feature to mastodon now.

in reply to Rokosun

personally, and I'm not saying this is *right so everyone must be the same*, I think striving for the appearance of online perfection is problematic. it disassociates us from proud mistake-making humans and makes posts seem too clean. in short, I'm happy without an edit button..
but then I don't use Mastodon so whatever they decide doesn't bother me.

maybe I'm looking into it too much though 🤣
in reply to Paul Wilde :blobcatnim_new: :dontpanic_nobg:

Yeah I know there are people who thinks like you, and its a valid point of view. For me personally it all changed when I started using matrix/element because that allowed me to edit my messages (unlike other messengers like whatsapp/signal). So after spending some time with these nice features now I can't live without it anymore 😂

Maybe I'm kind of a perfectionist or maybe I have OCD, I dunno, but little typos on one of my messages annoy me to no end :blobcatgiggle:

BTW, here is an example of why editing is important - https://fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/108574394437002116
I don't want people to misunderstand that post and think I'm being rude, but currently the only way to edit that post is to "Delete and redraft" which would break the entire thread along with it.

When such subtle differences in text based communication can cause misunderstandings between people, having to correct your messages in future replies is messy and inefficient.
in reply to Rokosun

This also makes me think about the differences between text based communication and talking to people IRL. For example, its very easy to misunderstand the tone of a statement in text based communication. And unlike talking, all of your posts on fedi are permanent. These things make it more important to have an edit feature.
in reply to Rokosun

Thanks for the example, I don't really see how it makes a difference though - to me, the fact you replied correcting the misunderstanding in a polite way is much more effective than changing what you said and hoping nobody noticed...

anyway, let's just say here that we're both right and what either of us decide to do makes absolutely no difference to the other in any way 😆 😄 :blobcathug:
in reply to Paul Wilde :blobcatnim_new: :dontpanic_nobg:

I would actually do both, I would correct the mistake from my post and also apologize to that person, but now I can only do one of those things.
in reply to Rokosun

You did it right. You explained, and I favorited your response, which in my view is like nodding when we'ld talk. Having your original toot is good because others can understand. If you had edited your first toot, nobody would understand your apology.

Also, I would like to edit. Me saying that we (probably) won't have it is purely of computer-technical nature. Just like we (probably) will never be able to edit already sent emails.

in reply to 𝓡𝓾𝓭𝓸𝓵𝓯 🇺🇦 :unverified:

My apology would be something like "Sorry I didn't mean to be rude, I have edited the post above to make it more clear". I don't think this would confuse people at all, and mastodon even allows users to look at the history of an edited post so they can look at my old post if they want. Mastodon also gives people a notification about my edit if they have interacted with that post in any way.
in reply to Rokosun

Those who laugh often understand nothing. ☹️
Mastodon is not Friendica. E-mail is also federated. Have you ever edited one after sending it?
@GoatsLive
in reply to 𝓡𝓾𝓭𝓸𝓵𝓯 🇺🇦 :unverified:

Maybe I should've used a cute emoji like :blobcatgiggle: instead of 😄

I wasn't laughing at you or anyone else, I'm sorry if I offended you.
@GoatsLive
in reply to Rokosun

If mastodon actually did support editing now, I would've changed it from ”haha 😄” to "lol :blobcatgiggle:". That way it doesn't look like I'm making fun of people, I'm just simply smiling or laughing for fun.
@GoatsLive
in reply to Rokosun

Had no idea you cannot edit posts on mastodon....I wonder why that is... I would hate to not be able to edit my posts on friendica.
in reply to Tio

Yes not being able to edit posts sucks, I've asked for this feature since the beginning. Now I hear mastodon devs are working on adding this feature, so that's great.

I think now it doesn't disappear anymore, mastodon now shows you a notification if a post has been edited. I heard mastodon is also trying to add edit functionality to their platform, so maybe these are just the early stages before they fully roll out that feature.
in reply to Rokosun

it might be your client. It's usually in the 3 dot menu (Delete & Redraft)
in reply to Xantulon :mastodon: :pixelfed:

I'm talking about the new edit feature, its different from "Delete & Redraft" - https://fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/108574073447162166

Rokosun
Yes Tio, mastodon has an option to "Delete & Redraft", it basically just deletes the post and allows you to make changes and then create a new post. Here is a screenshot attached - https://mastodon.social/@Xantulon/108574165189634043

Tio
Really!? That's awful...
in reply to Tio

Yes it was definitely not a replacement for actually edits, lol. I have actually asked about this feature not long since I started using mastodon - https://fosstodon.org/@futureisfoss/105174761155452451

Anyway, I'm happy they're trying to add real edits this time 😀
