Funny how everyone thinks everyone uses Whatsapp. Almost as if it is a default messaging app for phones. Pisses me off. I have a hard time trying to explain to people that I do not use it, I use Signal. They look at me as if I am a weirdo. But fuck them :D - if anyone wants to contact me, use Signal. It is a shame that an ad company, facebook who owns whatsapp, has become the default messaging platform for most humans on this planet.

But well, ad companies like google, tiktok, and the like are used for all sorts of online means by everyone.

Sad. And we should not accept this situation.

totally agree with you. I have Signal... but unfortunately I also had to get whatsapp as well here in Spain, bc that is the only app they all use. That pisses me off...
in reply to Coralie Renée

Oh yah exactly in Spain where I also live, "wasap" as they call it, has become synonymous with "messenger". So much so that you can't even contact someone to rent something or make an appointment unless you have the "wasap".
in reply to Tio

Exactly! And it is maddening. I use it to contact people, to look for jobs, clients, groups, etc...

Where are you based?

in reply to Coralie Renée

Well I live on the coastline and while it is super nice (nature wise) in the summer it is hot as hell and way too many tourists. Makes you want to lock yourself in your house and never go out :D.
in reply to Tio

That is exactly what I did for the whole month. In my flat...

hey. I just saw that u r using Friendica. And saw that is it great for private groups. Do you think it can be used for coaching memberships?
in reply to Coralie Renée

Yes we have our own Friendica instance. We provide trade-free services via trom.tf. I am unsure what do you mean by your question honestly....Friendica is like Mastodon but you have more options and such.
in reply to Tio

Well. With masto, you cannot have private groups. It is all in the open. I am looking for alternatives to fb groups. So that could be really cool.
in reply to Coralie Renée

Ah ok yes I think you can have private groups/forums on Friendica.

I use blogstatic for my blog and carrd for my website. Is there a way to crosspost with blogstatic as well or it is limited to wordpress?
in reply to Coralie Renée

I am only aware of the wordpress cross-post. And it works well I use it a lot. But in Friendica you can compose long posts with inline content, even style the font a bit. So you can even use it as your main blog. You can add posts in categories and more. Try our instance if you want social.trom.tf/

I just looked at it. This is fricking cool!!!

@globcoco
I'm currently on the same boat, forced to use WhatsApp 'cause everyone else uses it 😅 I remember hearing about a new EU regulation that would force messaging apps like WhatsApp to become interoperable with other apps like Signal, tho I didn't hear much of it after that..... While looking it up I also found this article by the EFF - eff.org/deeplinks/2022/04/eu-d…

So it seems like there are some issues that needs addressing before we can pull this off, specifically in regards to e2ee.

in reply to Rokosun

@futureisfoss Well. If the interoperability leads to steal data (like thread is trying to do with mastodon), I am not sure that I would like that...
in reply to Tio

Indeed! It's even worse in Czech Republic here: people mostly have the facebook messanger or whatever, and some organizations use the facebook groups for contacts, so I have to have a facebook account just to be able to join the group chat of people living in my building or to get the news about the house 🙄 Incredibly painful.. 😠

oh yah i remember that....absolute bonkers. the worst part is that if you try to explain to them why Signal, Friendica, or the like are better and why facebook, wasap, and so one are terrible, they do not get it. Or they do not care.

For my driving school I forced them to only contact me on Signal because they wanted me to use whatsapp to tell me when we have practices and such. I was the only one with Signal haha. But at least I made the instructor install Signal and explained to them a bit why it is better. In the end I don't think they care...

People just want to consume and use. Too tired and uninformed to do anything else. If everyone uses whatsapp, then just use it to talk to people. Data collection? ahh who cares!! They buy a phone that comes with whatever google, apple, samsung shit apps and tracking, but no one has the time or knowledge to change anything about it...and so on. Spoon fed.

When contacting someone I use SMS/RCS, and I'm simply not responding to Whatsapp direct messages, or maybe one day later. This sends a strong message (pun).

But I still need Whatsapp, and Fb Messenger above all, because groups are there, less known friends are there, and because sometimes conversations start with Facebook stories.

For me, the problem is not the advertising companies, but the state. They have a specific interest in the location of my body and my activities there. Simply share articles with WhatsApp users about how the state murders people with metadata, for example via air strikes or drones.
