Now, this is the kind of gritty, apocalyptic, doomscroll content I came here for!
Extinction level events!!
But let's focus on migrants !
Genuine question that I didnt get from the article.
What counts as the "record" here? Are we talking modern direct measurements (c100yr) or the longer (ice core?) proxy measurements that are >800ka?
Thanks for what you do on here.
A few years ago we took a chunk of our lawn and seeded it with a mix from Minnesota Native Landscapes. mnlcorp.com/native-seeds-and-p…
After two years of mowing, we got to let it go this year. I'll just add to this thread through the summer/fall. It's already amazing to see every day.
A strong Europe needs independent digital spaces.
We believe true digital sovereignty thrives on a competitive, contestable, open ecosystem where diverse platforms co-exist.
Today, we’re expanding our presence to W, the new social media. By being on W, we want to boost alternatives and support all efforts toward a decentralised web.
And we continue to invest into our presence on the Fediverse!

Because Y means, they're always behind X.
Too bad that W means, they're desperately striving to be one step ahead of X.
Amazing how they put their obsession with X even into their brand name.
Oh and @EUCommission: Congratulations. You have become a totally ridiculous shit show.
@RLRVivaldi Holy shit..
That's a massive no no

How long for a "human error" in W will have a breach in users data? It will happen... Misteriously but it will happen.
l sure hope someone's getting decently bribed for this. Otherwise it would just be pathetic.

it's not decentralized.
Deal with it.
The only decentralized SN, right now is the fediverse.
Deal with it (and fund it).

Unlike most reactions, I'm rather positive about the introduction of W Social. Every effort that breaks the network effect of less desirable (American/Chinese) social media is a plus in my book. W might be closer to what the average social media consumer wants.
Now, most users on Mastodon are more principled than the target audience of W. That's why we chose this network in the first place. Bear that in mind for your next toot.
do you guys ever listen to EU citizens? Mastodon is that platform. W is company owned. What could possibly go wrong?
Probably you don’t read this message and don’t respond either.
What happened to the Tech sovereignty package which was recently announced?
Are you aware W is now closed source, and the package you just announced includes the EU open source strategy?
digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/…
Tech sovereignty is Europe’s ability to act independently in the digital world by developing and controlling key technologies, data, and infrastructure, while reducing reliance on non-EU providers.Shaping Europe’s digital future
I think you are a bit too enthusiatic about W, like european media too yesterday.
The only good point I see is, that its superficially Europeans cloning a US business model. I don't see any more improvements or innovations there. It also doesn't treat me as customer, it treats me as a product in their shelf.
That’s what Mastodon provides. You’re exactly the same as X or Threads, just happen to be EU-based.
Still a big no.
@smallcircles We surely need reforms in the EU!
But I'm not sure if this fishy W-scandal happens due to "old' politics. I doubt if there's even politics behind ... but money, promises, lobbyism only. Many of these politicians even don't know social media, their employees fill their accounts.
In France, we have a TV series about EU politics, Parlement: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlemen…
It's a mix of comedy and disaster, horribly near to reality. I think, the whole platform
Who are you kidding, Bluesky in a new dress?

European public institutions are betting big on digital sovereignty and open source software. And yet they recently moved their Bluesky accounts to W Social, a private, for profit network owned by Swedish entrepreneurs that has quietly gone closed-so…Elena Rossini
@smallcircles story happened like this. (I worked some yrs for EU projects and was shocked how near the comedy of this TV series came to reality 😁 ).
Yea, I guess you are right. I think in this case I was thinking more of mentality, boomer stance, what is the right word. Gov-corporate mindset. Where if something has the right buzzword mix, well-connected people behind it, it has already won half the race, regardless whether it is any good. That mentality then influences policy approach. FOSS is having a hard time anyway, severely looked down upon as a bunch'a amateurs, and starts a step behind anything else. (Well, here I think FOSS can do much better, btw. But that's a different story).

great to see the commission embracing decentralised alternatives! since W is built on AT protocol, you can actually be present across W, Eurosky, and Bluesky simultaneously with the same account, no duplication needed
if true digital sovereignty is the goal, it's worth asking: what's the commission's position on Eurosky specifically? it's a non-profit, fully transparent, european-governed ATproto network that's been quietly building this infrastructure since before w was announced
both can coexist, but a few things are worth knowing about W before institutions endorse it: it's a private swedish for-profit startup (not EU-funded or backed), and it recently deleted its code from github without explanation, quietly going closed-source after presenting itself as open. that's the opposite of digital sovereignty
public institutions backing open, non-profit infrastructure sends a stronger signal than joining a private platform
the last line was the most important.
I hope you will learn and leave #wsocial to gain trust yourself again.
The ATproto protocol is a technically bad protocol, inferior to the protocol that Mastodon/Fediverse uses, and it's developed by shady cryptocurrency scammers with anti-government views.
Add to that the death of anonymity plus advertisements/tracking and the tolerance of literal neo-nazis, and you have W Social.
Why would any sane person join W?!?
Ursula von der Leyen joining W on launch day, but having no presence on Mastodon despite Mastodon existing for over a decade, sends a conflicting signal that is opposed to the EU Commission claiming to want to continue their presence on Mastodon.

I am confused:
1) open endorsement & straight up advertising (in many ways) of a privately owned company whose oversight includes lots of politicians and dubious private actors. How is this is not a conflict of interest?
2) the EU commision feed on W is not openly visible (or hard to find, same same). How is that "staying connected"?
3) does the commission advertise Mastodon just as much on W as vice-versa? Can't check, see 2).
4) ad monetizing w/ state IDs. Really? It's 2026
"Staying connected" should mean engaging in constructive dialogue with the community, not just dropping bombshells like this on social media and then ignoring the comments.
A warm hug to everyone who works in the European Commission’s communications department.
#SendingLove
Why are you advertising here for a venture-capital funded platform that requires people to upload their ID documents?
Why are you prominently displaying their logo?
Did you get paid for this advertising, or did you receive other benefits?
What can owners of other platforms do to receive similar promotion activities? What's the amount to pay, per commissioner?
This is a formal request to the maintainer(s) of the account @EUCommission (as is mandatory before filing a complaint with the European Ombudsman):
Assuming Article 2 (1) of the ECGAB applies to you:
The promotion of W Social AB, a company incorporated under the laws of Sweden, is a violation of Article 8 (1) of the ECAG:
»Article 8 - Impartiality and independence
Why is the company W Social given a prohibited preferential treatment, including the presentation of their logo, and a direct call to action ("Connect with us on W")?
