I nuked my YouTube channel. Turns out, I’d rather make shit for a handful of awesome freaks who still read blogs than spend my days begging Google’s algorithm to let me live. If I wanted to get crushed under a machine I’d go work at a Tesla factory.
in reply to JA Westenberg

I don't have hosting to offer you right now, but could you be interested in moving your old content to an alternative like peertube or and FTP server or similar?

I'm working to get off youtube fully as consumer. So content on alternatives would help. If you are interested, i'd try to find an alternative place for your content.

in reply to JA Westenberg

The best quality content (youtube videos included) is work of love. Not because or for money. So there is nothing wrong to have a YT channel or similar, as long you don't give two fucks about what the platform or people think or pay. Do it for the help/education of others. Not for money. Make quality, not quantity. make it searchable. a blog/wiki is perfect, if content is up to date and validated/tested. #sharing is caring.

Last month observed widespread warmer than average sea surface temperatures surrounding the #Arctic Ocean ice edge. Some of the largest anomalies were along the coast in the southeastern Barents Sea.

Data: NOAA OISSTv2.1 (ncei.noaa.gov/products/optimum…) 🌊

The Index will keep publishing op-eds telling Bezos, his doomsday cult markets and his self-serving liberties to go fuck themselves.

And you can support that right here: theindex.media/

I keep wondering what kind of Kool-Aid this guy and his bunch have been drinking. The more I try to fathom what they are attempting to say the more disgust I feel. To use the work 'ethical" is completely alien to this person.

The Atlantic is billionaire oligarch-owned media, and it paywallwed this article on how Hitler quickly destroyed democracy. So here's the paywall-jumped archived version.

It's interesting because of its similarities to today; the power of the Nazis was acquired through the mechanisms of democracy.

@xtaran asks:

Q5. I recently stumbled upon a library with hammocks on a bicycle and many more "service cycles" at les-zambules.com/ (via mastodon.social/@JasonThorne/1… and mastodon.top/@pierrick_taluy/1…). And today I had raclette from a raclette oven on a cargo bike.

What services on a bicycle have you seen or know of? Post pictures of them if possible.

A mobile bicycle-trailer pop-up library ... with hammocks. Genius.

We're still $76k away from our stretch goal to establish a non-profit.

We're already working on it, and can't wait to build a sustainable, long term home for our ecosystem of projects!

That being said, if you could help us reach $200k, we can hire more team members.

Please spread the word, we need ethical and safe alternative platforms more than ever!

Having to create an account on Kickstarter certainly is a threshold for me. How about lowering it and making it possible to donate more easily, such as via PayPal or credit card?
in reply to pixelfed

@Liberapay at the bottom of your page supports - among other things - PayPal, for those of you out there wondering. Good luck going forward, Pixelfed!

not sure where to post feature requests but I've noticed a growth in promotions on Pixelfed. Is that something to be encouraged, ignored or discouraged?

Personally, I'm mainly bothered by commercialization, particularly if it overwhelms the other content, so I'd be up for discouraging it.

Also, Markdown (raised by others previously) seems like a good, user centred way for people to express themselves efficiently. The world of comms elsewhere has evolved this richness (bold, italic, lists & bullets etc), so why not the Fediverse too?

Sudan is being erased in real-time.

A million refugees. A military ruling over ruins. A famine engineered by war. And the world? Silent. Watching. Pretending it isn’t happening.

The least you can do is pay attention.

Was it Cory Doctorow who noted that the only way to stop a system being corrupted is to design it to be impossible to corrupt from the outset? AI involves surrendering a HUGE amount of power, and expecting no operator ever to surrender to the temptation to tweak it for their own benefit is ludicrous

in reply to Helen Czerski

Yes I believe it was indeed Cory Doctorow @pluralistic who noted this. As I recall, he called building in those restraints "Ulysses Pacts" to prevent #enshittification.

The first post I can find in which he coined the term is this:

pluralistic.net/2021/02/15/uly…

Followed by numerous later writings:

pluralistic.net/tag/ulysses-pa…

Maybe @pluralistic can confirm the origins of this concept for us? 😅

I do wonder if an effective Ulysses Pact could ever be designed for an #AI business...

Celebrate community, agency, independence and artists' direct voices and choices, not clout cannons, gatekeepers, curators and skimmers.

Be wary of where you put your art and patronage. We need platforms that work for artist needs, not making artists work for platforms.

Stay weird, stay wild. Demand better of platforms or kick them to the kerb. Lift each other up and punch upwards friends.

We should as always continue to do our best to as directly as possible support our creative siblings as amiably as we can wherever we as artists can manage to be.

Seek change to build voices, don't shout them down.

We don't have to and shouldn't agree with every single platform and tool out there. Minimise harm where you can and do demand and celebrate good attribution and support paths.

Together we've proven it makes a huge difference being as direct and durable as possible.

Community building is hard.

Being positive in this timeline and tech climate is brutally hard.

Although the hamster is retiring from positive instigator, please continue where you can in your circles to support and uplift one another.

Same goes for advocacy, research, quietly testing of all the things out there competing for oxygen. We can be vigilant for each other and offer assists to those who ask AND warn when things smell off.

Be safe. Protect our voices.
