Have a good weekend! Here's your Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the *2nd* lowest on record (JAXA data)...

• about 630,000 km² below the 2010s mean
• about 1,320,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 1,960,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 2,370,000 km² below the 1980s mean

#gardening, or how to grow tomatoes in five easy steps:

1) fill the #greenhouse with leaves and stuff

2) throw in some #chicken

3) close the door and let the chicken rampage for a bit

4) remove the chicken, and wait many months

5) actually grow tomatoes 🍅

in reply to Pepijn

One day in and the #chicken are in their element. They've spread the leaves around the greenhouse in one consistent layer and are pecking at everything that could potentially move. Here's a quick timelapse.

certainly looks like a pretty cool nightclub for chickens!

Last month was the 4th warmest October on record for the average global sea surface temperature...

The shear amount of energy transfer to achieve this amount of warming is staggering. Wow.

Bonfire Social 1.0 is live! A federated, community‑first social network built on the modular Bonfire toolkit, and it’s only the beginning.

It's time to go beyond microblogging and build apps for community organising, open science, mutual aid, and collective decision‑making. Let's take back the internet with open protocols, consent‑based governance, and portability by design.

Back the “last migration” from closed platforms to open networks: indiegogo.com/projects/bonfire…

Could you tell what exactly this is and how it’s different from using Mastodon or so? I don’t mean a/the pitch-story for investors (I could read the lengthy campaign then) but simple facts?
in reply to nSonic

both bonfire social and openscience.network are built on bonfire, they address different needs and have different features and UX. We are now working with communities that needs tools for organising and coordinating (events, decision making, mutual aid, etc) which will result in new extensions that everyone will be able to install and use in their own bonfire app. We're not competing or building a mastodon alternative, we're building tools for communities in the open social web...

congratulations. That’s really exciting for you. This is an ambitious project with great value.

(I know you posted this news a month ago, but I just now saw a boost in my feed. And the congrats is still in order.)

🚨 Last month observed the highest average temperature for the month of October across the #Antarctic Circle, with clearly 2025 well above any prior year in the satellite era.

Don't forget: at Wacken last year, metalhead.club ran outdoor advertising.

The astrophotographer I worked with earlier this month, Jeanine Holowatuik instagram.com/jeanine.holowatu… northernescapephotography.com/… sent me some horrifying (Halloween-levels of scary) time lapse movies she took of Comet Lemmon.

Why horrifying? Starlink.

I've lately been quite obsessed with this app called StreetComplete. It gamifies contributing to OpenStreetMaps in a really nice way by giving you you little quests to do while you walk around. A fun way to get some steps in, to make you look closer at your environment and to do a good thing!

@InsertUser yes. They are using it to create crowd sourced low stress bike routes. We’re starting to build a network here in Berkeley. Feel free to contact them if you’re interested.
in reply to Orrock LXXXVI XLVII

No.

I can see no links to download their network data under an open license. In skimming their terms I think they seem very keen that no one but them ever benefits from it and they repeat "Copyright © 2025 Bike Streets, LLC. All rights reserved." on every page I've checked.

I will not be contributing to what appears to be a closed #OpenStreetMap derived database.

I would much rather improve an actual community project like OSM with data that can be used by others.

Do you have fun zines about how to switch away from big tech? Maybe a little intro to Mastodon, or something about the thrills of libre office?

I'm going to do a little peer workshop in a bit to help activists with a non-tech background start shifting away from big tech.

It would be cool to have some zines/printouts to share.

in reply to Cyberlyra

@cyberlyra @sly_vi @trib At the moment the group I'm working with aren't engaged in any activism that's illegal. Their main risk is reputational (getting fired for talking about Palestine), and they're not trying to avoid that. Their main motivation is to tm shift away from the big tech companies that are complicit in genocide.

@cyberlyra @trib I've also followed this project, it's really awesome! I really like the focus on "real people's problems" instead of tech problems (which can be resolved with elbow grease or throwing money at an independent company)

Some friends of mine had critics about the VPN part, like "We should stop presenting VPNs as a panacea for security, it's not.
Sure, it can prevent your Internet provider or the state to read your traffic, which is great, but most you're still at the mercy of wherever your VPN tunnel ends (ie: which country), and VPN companies could potentially read your stuff, if asked for by law enforcement
VPN is tool in the tool chain, not a stopgap solution for security"

Yah there is no purpose in this society other than trading. Ancient practice that has transformed us all into merchants and consumers. Until that is recognized there is no path towards a solution.
