I've been working on updating a decision making process in a #coop from #voting to #consensus inspired by #ietf #decisionMaking process when a colleague made me realize that consensus process is not compatible with many #neurodivergent cognitive styles. It disproportionately favors #Neurotypicals and extraverted ppl while putting more introverted and less verbal type people at a disadvantage. Also it's yet another "social capital" dominated decision making process. Less social capital - less likely you'll actually speak up against the crowd.

The "no one left behind" goal is not fulfilled by the "no loud opposition" decision process. What process does that? We're staying with the simplistic voting for now but adding a prolonged debate. Any ideas? How other #cooperatives do that? Especially #anarchist ones?

One of the hardest parts for running my own business isn’t what you’d expect.

I’m dyslexic. I have to manually copy all the addresses that come into Etsy to my couriers website for *every order*, plus write customs/export paperwork for each U.S. line item. I also re-read order receipts at least 3 times.

It’s incredibly tedious and I wish there was a better accessibility option other than checking over and over again and using TTS.

Did we not read to them enough? Parents ask this quietly. Dyslexia is neurobiological, not caused by reading at home, not caused by parenting. CohenHallowell built BrainPulse™ to work with how a dyslexic brain actually learns.

JFC
my bilinguism triggers #dyslexia and one of the biggest problems i have is understanding songs in English, YET! even with my disability, i understood what Cohen meant when i first heared:

❝ She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah❞

it’s s song about the liminal space between sex & the sacred. that stanza is about ORGASMS and MYSTIC ECSTASY.

it’s Cohen’s low-key shoutout to George Bataille’s ON EROTISM.

The Leonard Cohen estate is objecting to President Trump‘s planned use of the song “Hallelujah” ahead of tonight’s Freedom 250 rally on the National Mall here in Washington.

Celebrate Learning Disability Week June 15-21 with Like Stars on Earth, the heartwarming film about a dyslexic boy who thrives with the support of his art teacher. This is a wonderful story to share with students, families, after-school activities and communities. Our free teaching guide features classroom-ready lessons across the curriculum, including a lesson about dyslexia and brain science!

One of the weird wiring effects of my dyslexiav brain is that certain words look wrong to me, when spelled correctly.

I always want to write "thankyou" as one word instead of "thank you". And to me the correct spelling of professional should be "profressional".

Anytime I have to use either of these words my brain halts and goes into lockdown while I redebate what makes sense and what is expected of me.

As someone who is dyslexic, watching the backlash against LLMs feels a bit strange. I finally found a tool that helps me communicate more confidently, and sometimes it feels like that gets overlooked when people talk about them as if they have no value whatsoever. #dyslexia #LLM #AI

Okay #AskFedi what's this #HashtagNonsense in Mastodon?

I have seen, over the years, quite a few posts encouraging users to use #CamelCase in #Hashtags to encourage #accessibility.

However, when I click ANY hashtag to post about this, either in my browser or Moshidon app, they are presented as lowercase. Also, starting a hashtag only presents them lowercase. This isn't really #UserFriendly towards users with #dyslexia

Is this a dice.camp setting? Is this #Mastodon wide? Can we fix this?

Neurodivergent conditions often come with comorbidities. I’m a late-diagnosed autistic person, and I strongly suspect I’m also ADHD and dyslexic.

Comorbidity. The word says a lot about how these divergences are perceived by society.

This is the first time I’ve seen dyslexia framed in a positive light. It’s a really beautiful film

Our brains just work differently. We think outside the box.

AI now can dub YouTube videos to other languages, why I still can't find a proper tool to read my lecture scrips to me in a tolerable voice. Please give me some suggestions about softwares that helps dyslexia. I really need this. I don't want to read long German sentences about laws anymore. Listening to them will be way faster for me to understand. #askFedi#dyslexia

I applied to a handful of Canadian Universities as a transfer student this academic year to prove to myself (mostly, my younger self) that I could it.

I didn’t know if I would switch schools or if we could end up moving, so I threw my hat into the ring across western Canada.

The first acceptance letter arrived today - University of Victoria - my dream. 🌊 🐳 🏔️ 🏝️

🩵 I can’t accept it, but something about knowing I could go if I was able to heals part of my inner child that dealt with so much trauma trying to get through grade school as an undiagnosed autistic with learning disabilities 20-30 years ago. Time is healing ❤️‍🩹

however, #Dyslexia is one of those invisible challenges that hold people back from achievements which would otherwise be valuable. If @pluralistic needs a spill-chucker (as I still do), don't shame him. We all appreciate his activism and his advocacy.

(I think I met @pluralistic at an Internet Society conference about the turn of the millennium, but I could be mistaken. In any case, hi, Cory!)

In my latest podcast episode I talk about my own struggles with the written word #dyslexia #autism #adhd

Does anyone else have these problems?
I can hear a squirrel move in a tree at a hundred yards or a slow leak in a tire as I walk by, but I can't understand the words spoken into my ear without effort. I can see a squirrel in a tree at a hundred yards or a small transparent mushroom at the foot of a wall, but I can't see words on packaging or signs without my full concentration.

the day comes and everything seems a blur, but i had the clarity of mind to ask my besty. and that’s when i realized that, because of my #dyslexia i hadn’t understood Dr. The Eyes was performing what would be the first in a series of biopsies.

had 8 in total, 7 just in my nuclear boob. but it was her mammo and biopsy that set the wheels in motion. what’s seared in my memory about her were the METICULOUS notes on me and my boobs, she kept in a spiral bound notebook.

YES, A PAPER NOTEBOOK… 🧵
