Palestine : For a libertarian communist re-commitment to the BDS campaign

This text, adopted at the Federal Coordination meeting in March 2023, aims to revive the momentum and coordinate the UCL's involvement in the BDS France (Boycott Divestment Sanctions) campaign.

During its national meeting on January 14-15, 2023, the BDS France campaign against apartheid and colonialism in Palestine decided to raise the profile of its action and launch a campaign specifically against Carrefour, which supports illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine.
Signatory organizations of the BDS appeal, including UCL, are invited to take part in it. The UCL supports the struggle of the Palestinian people [1] for freedom from the colonial war that's being waged by the State of Israel. Israel is entering a new phase, with the arrival in power in Tel Aviv of a coalition of the right and far right, the ensuing provocations, the individual attacks launched out of desperation on Israeli settlements, the military bombings in retaliation, the threat of bankruptcy looming over the Palestinian Authority and the emergence of young resistance groups (such as the Nablus Battalion) independent of both Hamas and Fatah…

Despite facing repression under the Sarkozy-Hollande era (with the Alliot-Marie circular of February 12, 2010 penalizing boycotting Israel or Israeli settlements), despite divisions over tactics and methods [2], the BDS-France campaign continued: boycott of Puma, Axa, actions taken during the 2020 Tour de France (alongside the UCL) [3], against the participation of Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest...

Quick reminder about BDS: this international campaign was launched in 2004 by the whole of the Palestinian civil society (i.e. those living in Israel, in exile or in the Occupied Territories). Modelled
on the boycott campaign against South Africa in the 1980s, its aim is to demand, by peaceful means, the application of international law: put an end to occupation and colonization, tear down the West Bank barrier, end the Gaza blockade, give access to equal rights and the right for refugees to return (or receive fair compensation).

In France, BDS started off in June 2009, notably with campaigns against Agrexco [4], Orange (which ended up victorious), Veolia (a company that had been entrusted with building the Jerusalem tramway and was involved in the destruction of Arab neighborhoods, etc.).

The current campaign is aimed at the France-based multinational retail corporation Carrefour. Carrefour, through its partnership with the Israeli company Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan, both operating in illegal settlements, finds itself complicit in war crimes, occupation, settlement colonialism and apartheid under international law. Targeted for export, it is now also targeted for import. Campaigns are also being put into motion in Africa, in several Arab countries and in Asia, where Carrefour has a strong presence.

The UCL is a member of the BDS campaign, as are many anti-racist and trade union organizations (CNT, Solidaires, certain local branches of the CGT) in which libertarian communists actively participate. Here are several rather simple actions we take to support their efforts :
• On a broader, more general level : relay the BDS slogans on our social networks and communications media;
• At federal level: stick a small BDS logo on the back page of the newspaper and, on the home page of the website, a visual linking to a section compiling information and articles on the campaign, and invite our partners in the Anarkismo network to do the same;
• At local level: local groups may set up actions and "label" them BDS (as in 2020 for the Tour de France); they may also join forces with local BDS committees or raise funds with other signatory organizations.
Additionally, an international week—the Israeli Apartheid Week—is organized on a yearly basis every March (this year's edition took place from March 13 to 27). In the past years, it was mainly held on university campuses, with screenings, debates, etc. It ends with the Journée de la terre ('Land Day'), every March 30, which commemorates peasant resistance in the face of expropriation, most notably the Palestinian general strike of March 30, 1976 (during which 6 strikers were murdered).

A team is being put together and is to be given the mandate to :
• Organize the UCL's actions within BDS in a way that's in line with our federal guidelines on the matter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict ;
• Set up internal training courses on the Palestinian question, which has been losing ground in France - including in the social movement - since the 2010s.

The UCL's anti-colonialist commitment and anti-racist vigilance must be beyond reproach, to repel both any attempt at anti-Semitic intrusion and instrumentalization, and the Zionists' usual slander ('anti-Semitic', 'Islamo-leftist'), which the French state was also seen using in order to further stigmatize the far left, the Muslim minority and working-class neighborhoods.

CLARIFICATION OF THE TERM 'ZIONISM'

The term Zionism used here refers to the definition it was given in the "Against colonialism in Palestine, for a free and democratic Palestine" motion adopted in June 2020: The Israeli ruling class, and most of the political class, are deeply imbued with a nationalist and colonialist ideology, Zionism. This ideology was born against a backdrop of growing anti-Semitism and nationalism in Europe.
Unlike assimilationist or revolutionary movements, Zionist movements considered anti-Semitism to be inevitable for as long as Jews remained a minority everywhere, and their historical goal was to create a Jewish national majority in Palestine—which translated into the expulsion of Palestinians throughout the entirety of the colonial process, as well as a policy of ethnic cleansing.
In the continuation of that ideology, the current Israeli ruling class aims to maintain an ethno-nationalist state in which the national majority remains Jewish. The political project of part of this ruling class goes as far as advocating for the total exclusion of Arab and Druze minorities: the 2018 law on the "nation-state of the Jewish people" is the inescapable consequence of the policy that's been consistently pursued ever since 1948.

My name is Tio and I manage pretty much all of the TROM projects.

I am sorry to tell you this, but I will remove the tasks.trom.tf (Vijunka) from our TROM.tf services. Let me briefly explain.

First, I am overwhelmed. I have to manage so many things, it has become a burden. This is why I will cut down from our trom.tf services. I would like to keep those that I also use so to make sure everything works well and I am motivated enough to keep them well managed. I used Vikunja for our TROM projects but since then I discovered a better local alternative: AppFlowy - appflowy.io/ - en excellent all-in-one notes taking app with calendars and kaban-style to-do lists. There is also Focalboard that is more alike Vikunja aur.archlinux.org/packages/foc… and can even be used locally.

And lastly we have added Deck to our TROM Files files.trom.tf - a great online Kaban-style tool. I have been using this for years to collaborate on projects. It is even easier to use than Vikunja and you can invite others to collaborate on tasks.

Lastly, we are moving to a new and better server and Vikunja fails to restore properly...I tried many things and it simply takes too long to find a solution.

Those being said, I am sorry to bother you with this and I really strive to provide good and reliable services, but Vikunja (Tasks) was always one of those services that I knew it won't last too long considering the alternatives out there.

TROM Files with Deck is perhaps the best replacement if you want to collaborate online with others.

Therefore please backup your stuff and import into some other similar app/service. Around 30st of this month TROM Tasks (Vikunja) will stop.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience and do not worry services like TROM Files will never cease to exist since we use them for our project daily.

Tested the move to a new server for our Matrix/Synapse. 60GB database, 15GB of files. All worked great! We are ready to move. I am trying to find the safest and easiest way to manage the entire TROM.tf server.

So. I bought a Hetzner Auction server for 45 Euros a month - similar to what I am currently paying for Contabo. But this server has 4TB of SSD, 8 core i7-6700 CPU and 32GB of RAM. Overall better than Contabo's. What we needed was more storage space. And now we got double.

So Matrix being so massive takes around 25 minutes to backup and around 40-50 minutes to restore from a backup. But this is by far the worst of them all....

Basically for the new server I want to be able to easily restore a service/app in case it fails to update. Now I can. Plus I am setting up Timeshift since you do not have snapshots for a dedicated server....but with Timeshift I can restore in case I fuck up the system itself or cannot, for some odd reason, restore an app from a backup.

I did so many tests and @Roma helped out a lot. He is also looking at another option, using Proxmox to manage the server, this way we can have snapshots. Snapshots are fast and I have used them a lot on Contabo, but the massive downside is that you restore the ENTIRE server with snapshots, losing data from any other services that are running between the time you took a snapshot and restored it. In other words if I take a system Snapshot before updating our MAtrix, and takes me 15 minutes to update Matrix without backing it up, and then I realize it failed to update....with a snapshot I can restore the ENTIRE system in seconds. Nice. Matrix works now. However, it will revert back how the entire system was 15 minutes ago for TROM Files, Friendica, and everything else...

It means that if you made posts on friendica, synced files on TROM FIles and so forth, they will be LOST. Yeah I could easily restore a failed Matrix update but I mess up the rest of the apps, at least a little bit.

Therefore I need to do this properly per-app basis, despite taking around 1h to restore Matrix, is worth it I guess....

The following days we are ready to move the entire trom.tf!

Plateau du Larzac : Les Résistantes 2023

Du 3 au 6 août dernier s’est tenue la première édition des Résistantes, des rencontres autour des luttes écologistes. Des camarades de l’UCL, de divers groupes, s’y sont rendu·es et certain·es parmi elles et eux se sont retrouvé·es pour en proposer un retour collectif.

Cinquante ans après la lutte contre le projet de camp militaire, le plateau du Larzac accueillait ces 3, 4, 5 et 6 août, la première édition des « Résistantes », rencontres autour des luttes écologistes locales et globales. Malgré le vent qui soufflait sur ce territoire emblématique de la lutte paysanne et écologiste, nous étions quelques camarades de l’UCL à avoir répondu à l’appel de Terres de lutte, de la Confédération paysanne, et des Faucheuses et faucheurs volontaires d’OGM qui organisaient ces rencontres.

Nous n’étions pas les seul·es : environ 7000 à 7500 participant·es ont, en tout, été recensé·es sur ces quatre jours. Un nombre conséquent qui n’a pas semblé submerger une organisation en autogestion relativement efficace. L’organisation des Résistantes a aussi montré qu’un véritable travail d’inclusivité avait été entrepris : présence d’un espace camping en mixité choisie sans hommes cis, d’une garderie autogérée, ainsi que d’une équipe de veille et de prévention des violences sexistes et sexuelles sollicitable jour et nuit avec un numéro d’urgence. Un espace calme avec des zones dévalidistes avait aussi été mis en place.

Un tel événement a été pour nous et pour toutes et tous les participant·es l’occasion de découvrir ou redécouvrir la pluralité des luttes écologistes et la diversité des problématiques globales et locales qu’elles recouvrent. On a pu causer paysannerie et sécurité sociale de l’alimentation en réfléchissant à comment travailler et répartir autrement la production agricole. On a pu parler de la gestion du foncier, de l’accaparement des terres, de la lutte au Larzac dans les années 70. Mais on a aussi pu aborder d’autres sujets à la croisée d’enjeux plus larges comme le municipalisme, l’associatif, l’autogestion, le lien avec les institutions.

Une chose est sûre, c’est que les Résistantes ont réussi le pari d’offrir un véritable espace de convergence aux principales actrices et acteurs de la lutte écologiste de toute échelle. Longue serait la liste des collectifs, associations et syndicats qui ont rejoint l’initiative et qui ont tenu leur stand dans le village des assos. On citera tout de même, entre autres, la présence de Solidaires, de la CGT, des Soulèvements de la terre, de Bassine Non-Merci, de la Confédération paysanne.

Un tel moment de rencontre a alors été une occasion parfaite pour des coordinations de nombreuses luttes locales comme la Déroute des routes, les luttes pour l’eau, contre le nucléaire, pour les forêts ou encore contre les fermes usines, pour se réunir et s’organiser.

Ainsi, lors de la réunion intercomités des Soulèvements de la terre, c’est environ 68 comités locaux qui étaient représentés et qui ont pu échanger et préparer le gros week-end de rencontre intercomité qui aura lieu fin septembre. Alors que la menace de dissolution pesait encore, ce moment a été d’une rare intensité dans sa force à rassembler la détermination de très nombreuses et nombreux militants qui ont choisi de constituer un comité des Soulèvements ces derniers mois.

Le bilan d’un tel événement est difficile à dresser tant il a été riche en enseignements. Ils nous a tout de même offert la possibilité de faire revivre la mémoire des luttes passées. Notamment celle de la terre qui nous accueillait : le Larzac. Territoire qui, grâce à la lutte déterminée des années 70, s’est vu passer d’un projet de camp militaire à la Société collective des terres du Larzac (SCTL). C’est à dire à une gestion collective des terres exploitables qui posent le droit d’usage et d’exploitation au dessus du droit de propriété et prend ainsi à contre-pied toute spéculation foncière capitaliste.

Le Larzac est aujourd’hui le seul territoire français dans lequel le nombre de paysan ne se réduit pas. Fort de cette mémoire vive des victoires de notre camp social, les Résistantes nous laissent un goût d’espoir tant elles ont témoigné d’un engouement pour rapprocher les enjeux des luttes sociales et écologistes dans les luttes à venir.

Et celles ci sont nombreuses, locales ou globales, la liste et la cartographie participative mises à disposition à l’accueil du site en témoignent : elles sont fournies mais surtout, elles nous ont donné le sentiment de pouvoir se rapprocher des camarades de notre camp où qu’ils et elles soient.

Un super moment de rencontre où nous reviendrons avec joie l’année prochaine !
