Palestine-Israël : pas de paix sans la fin de l’occupation, de la colonisation, de l’apartheid 09/10

L’horreur a répondu à l’horreur. Les centaines d’assassinats de civils en Israël sont un drame, et ce drame est une conséquence des milliers de civils ensevelis sous les décombres de Gaza par les bombardements israéliens depuis 2008. On ne peut pas sans conséquence opprimer, spolier, affamer, enfermer un peuple entier dans cette prison à ciel ouvert qu’est la Palestine : c’est la première leçon de l’explosion meurtrière du 7 octobre. L’État d’Israël y répond déjà par un énième cycle de destruction et de massacre. Il serait temps, au contraire, qu’il comprenne que son système colonial est intenable. Liberté pour la Palestine !

Le samedi 7 octobre, le Hamas a lancé une attaque coordonnée d’une ampleur inédite sur le territoire israélien et sur les colonies, détruisant en plusieurs endroits le mur qui entoure Gaza, s’emparant de plusieurs villages le long du mur et kidnappant au moins 100 soldats et des civils. L’armée et les services de renseignement israéliens ont été pris de court, mais ont entamé une riposte extrêmement violente sur la bande de Gaza, ainsi que sur le sud du Liban après l’envoi de roquettes par le Hezbollah, allié libanais du Hamas. On dénombre plusieurs centaines de morts palestiniennes et israéliennes.

Cette attaque, cinquante ans jour pour jour après le début de la guerre de 1973 entre l’Égypte et la Syrie d’une part et Israël de l’autre, a été prévue et organisée de longue date à Gaza. C’est une réponse à la politique colonialiste et d’apartheid de l’État d’Israël et de son gouvernement fasciste, raciste, suprémaciste et colonialiste qui a multiplié les provocations ces derniers mois (armée sur l’esplanade des Mosquées, expulsions de Palestinien⋅nes, refus de toute solution politique et pacifique) et renforcé le soutien à la colonisation en Cisjordanie. C’est aussi une réponse à la normalisation diplomatique en cours entre Israël et les États du Golfe, notamment l’Arabie Saoudite, et au soutien constant apporté par les USA, l’Union Européenne et la France au régime israélien. C’est surtout la conséquence de 75 ans de colonisation, d’exploitation brutale et raciste, d’occupation et d’apartheid de la part de l’État d’Israël face aux Palestinien⋅nes, Arabes israélien⋅nes, Druzes, Juif⋅ves d’Éthiopie… La conséquence du refus de toute solution politique et de paix partagée, de la reconnaissance du droit au retour des réfugié⋅es (pourtant garanti par l’ONU), du blocus de Gaza depuis plus de 15 ans et des discriminations et violences quotidiennes.

La fourniture d’électricité et de biens de consommation a été arrêtée envers Gaza, qui en dépend pour son fonctionnement quotidien, par le gouvernement d’extrême droite de Netanyahou qui a prévenu qu’il était « en guerre » et que la riposte serait la plus violente de ces dernières années, engageant la population à évacuer la zone frontalière tout en entamant des bombardements sur la bande de Gaza. Ce gouvernement corrompu, critiqué ces derniers mois par d’immenses manifestations de la part d’une grande partie de la population israélienne, mène une guerre meurtrière permanente contre la population palestinienne, et justifie son maintien au pouvoir par une politique sécuritaire et autoritaire. C’est lui qui porte la responsabilité de la guerre et des morts des deux côtés. Comme toujours, ce sont les populations civiles qui payent le prix des guerres décidées par les classes dirigeantes impérialistes. Les prochains jours nous diront si l’offensive du Hamas signera la fin du gouvernement Netanyahou, ou au contraire l’unification de la population derrière lui dans la guerre. La situation actuelle est en tout cas la preuve de l’échec des politiques prétendant à une solution impérialiste et militaire en Palestine.

L’Union communiste libertaire soutient la lutte du peuple palestinien pour l’autodétermination, la liberté, le droit à une vie digne, dans une fédération multiethnique, laïque et démocratique. Les perspectives nationalistes, religieuses et guerrières, même si elles sont l’expression d’une situation sans issue, n’offriront jamais la garantie de la paix et la justice au Proche-Orient. Ces perspectives servent le jeu des autocrates et des extrêmes droites intolérantes. Nous appelons à l’arrêt des violences commises par l’armée israélienne et le Hamas, qui impactent lourdement les populations civiles des deux côtés. Nous ne partageons pas l’idéologie du Hamas, qui n’a pas à cœur les justes aspirations du peuple palestinien. Nous soutenons la lutte de résistance et de libération palestinienne. Nous comprenons la nécessité pour cette lutte de stratégies parfois violentes, conséquences d’une situation de blocage politique. Nous appelons à la démilitarisation de l’État d’Israël et à une vraie recherche d’une solution, fondée sur les demandes légitimes du peuple palestinien. Ce sont les conditions nécessaires à toute résolution durable du conflit.

Contre toute tentation d’épuration ethnique au Haut-Karabakh 22/09

Les 19 et 20 septembre, à l’issue d’une offensive éclair, Bakou a pris le contrôle de l’enclave arménienne du Haut-Karabakh avec l’assentiment de Moscou. L’Azerbaïdjan a beau promettre à présent une normalisation « pacifique », la menace d’épuration ethnique est réelle.

Au terme de la guerre qui, à l’automne 2020, a vu la défaite de l’Arménie, l’Azerbaïdjan a reconquis des territoires occupés depuis 1994 par Erevan. Le Haut-Karabakh, enclave arménienne emblématique au sein de ses frontières, avait pour sa part été placé sous la protection de l’armée russe.

Poutine promettait des négociations de paix entre ses deux vassaux. Mais il avait la tête ailleurs et, depuis l’invasion sanglante de l’Ukraine en 2022, Ilham Aliyev, le dictateur mafieux qui règne à Bakou, n’avait eu de cesse de tester la permissivité de l’impérialisme russe, en multipliant les incursions militaires en Arménie, allant jusqu’à faire le blocus du Haut-Karabakh. Moscou avait systématiquement laissé faire. Début août 2023, un rapport de l’ONU y évoquait une situation de « famine », dans une logique de « génocide ».

C’est en vain que le Premier ministre arménien Nikol Pachinian appelait l’État russe à respecter ses engagements. Début septembre, en désespoir de cause, il se tournait vers les États-Unis. C’était sans doute le geste de trop, qui aura convaincu Poutine de donner son feu vert à un Ilham Aliyev qui piaffait d’impatience. Vingt-quatre heures et 200 morts plus tard, le Haut-Karabakh capitulait devant l’assaut azerbaïdjanais.
Les craintes légitimes de la population arménienne

L’enclave est donc repassée sous le contrôle de Bakou. Comment ne pas partager l’effroi de la population arménienne du Haut-Karabakh, quand on connaît le passif de l’État azerbaïdjanais et sa réalité actuelle ?

Rappelons que cet État, tenu par le clan mafieux d’Ilham Aliyev, est une des pires dictatures de la planète. Rappelons qu’aligné sur l’État turc, il partage les mêmes lointaines racines génocidaires, raison pour laquelle il campe toujours sur la négation du génocide arménien de 1915-1918. Rappelons qu’après les pogroms anti-arméniens de 1988 et 1990 dans la région de Bakou, la population du Haut-Karabakh avait, par référendum, proclamé son indépendance. Bakou avait réagi par une répression armée, entraînant une guerre entre l’Arménie et l’Azerbaïdjan et une épuration ethnique des deux côtés. La victoire d’Erevan en 1994 s’était soldée par l’occupation militaire d’une partie de l’Azerbaïdjan et un conflit gelé pendant vingt-cinq ans, situation dangereusement porteuse d’une nouvelle guerre. Qui avait fini par advenir avec la revanche azerbaïdjanaise de 2020.

Aujourd’hui, c’est le Haut-Karabakh qui devient un territoire occupé, avec la menace d’une logique de vengeance et d’épuration ethnique à bas bruit, à force de brimades et de discriminations racistes.

- Non à l’épuration ethnique !
- Oui à la paix, à une solution politique au Caucase.
- Oui à l’autodétermination des peuples, oui à l’autodétermination du Haut-Karabakh !

I made another article about how I moved from Cuntabo to Webdock and why I am moving from this awful Cuntabo hosting company. So read it here because I will not go into the details of how I did it. But basically I am using Yunohost and it makes it so easy to manage a lot of services and transfer them to a new server. Love it!

The challenge: 1.4TB of data and some 15 services.

The previous move was about 100GB in size. Now more than 10 times the size. I would have to find a hosting that provides a lot of storage space, they are decent, and I have full root control over the server. Very hard to find. And Webdock would not do it. They provide 500GB of diskspace max, so that was out of the question.

Why Hetzner?

They seem very popular in Europe and used among the people who provide similar services to ours, so the feedback from these people is decent. Plus they have these auctioned servers that are basically computers, older, but still good, that you can basically rent. And they are cheap. Plus they have a huge variety of them so it was not that hard to find one that had a lot of storage space.

2 x 1.92TB SSD SATA is almost 4TB of SSD storage. 32GB of RAM and Intel i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 8 cores.

That’s the one I bought. For only 45 Euros a month. On Cuntabo I paid 38 Euros for 2TB of storage, 64 GB of RAM (too much for our needs anyway) and a 10 virtual core AMD (the one we have now is more powerful and the hardware is only for us, dedicated). Plus I had to pay 4 more Euros a month with Cuntabo to get a new IP because the old one had a terrible reputation because we hosted all sorts of services like Invidious, Searx, and the like, and google and the rich-crew started to ban our IP and thus all of our services were affected.

Anyway, with Cuntabo I was paying 42 Euros a month for 2TB of SSD storage, and now I pay 45 Euros a month for almost 4TB of SSD storage and a better overall server. Not bad!

You see we were running out of disk space and we had to move to a new server or use an object storage, so I was ready to pay some 10-20 more euros a month for a 1-2 TB of extra storage. Now for just 3 more Euros a month I get that!

I also feel good using older hardware so it does not go to waste 😉

How to manage a dedicated server?

A dedicated server is just a computer somewhere else. It has no management besides some basic panel that allows you to change a few things and restart the computer. Therefore no snapshots….but do I even need them?

Snapshots – bad??

I mentioned before that I NEED to be able to make server snapshots and that I am obsessed with backups. BUT I started to realize that my practice was not good.

There are a few situations that stress me out in terms of server management and the services that we provide:

1. When I update either Friendica or Synapse (Matrix).

Both have massive databases and to backup these automatically before doing the updates via YNH, can take between 30 minutes to an hour and needs to be done via the terminal else the YNH panel will show you a timeout error because of Nginx probably.

Then if the update fails, the restoration takes another hour or two for each. Meaning these services can be unavailable for a few hours if there is a failed update. And Synapse gets updates quite often. So I am always stressed when I have to update these. And these two services failed to update a bunch of times over the past years…. Snapshots saved my ass…

2. When I do kernel/core system updates or migrate to a new Debian version.

These sort of updates should be super stable. It is Debian after all. But what if the shit hits the fan one day!?

3. When YNH upgrades to a new major version.

Same….so far so stable, but what if shit hits again the fan?

4. When I do custom stuff to the system or make some mistake like delete some files…

These can happen considering that at times I do some custom changes for our services, but unlikely for me to do custom stuff to the system itself. Still…

So how?

Before, my dirty solution was to take a snapshot of the entire server before I do any of the above. If shit hits the fan I restore in a few seconds. Of course that’s not a good practice. Imagine I update Synapse and even without a backup before update, it can take 15-20 minutes to update. So I take a snapshot before I start the update. The update fails and Synapse is broken – it takes me 10-20 minutes to realize or try to fix it. 30-40 minutes have passed and now I click the restore snapshot-panic button!

I have restored Synapse ALONGSIDE everything else how it was 40 minutes ago. If anyone made posts on Friendica, synced files via Nextcloud and so forth, are ALL LOST. BAD!

You can see why this is a very very BAD practice and I’ve done this a dozen of times for the past years, simply because the alternative was kinda bothering me….Like I said it would take me 1-2 hours to restore Synapse from a backup. And frankly I never tried to restore these properly because a few times when I tried via the YNH panel they failed.

So how to manage it all?

First, Yunohost is quite great at the way it manages updates. It forces a backup of the service and only after it does the backup, it will update it. Now that I have a lot of experience restoring stuff from backups I realized that it is not too scary to do it via SSH (command line) for massive services like Synapse or Friendica. So we are covered there. If any of them fails, restore them via the command line even if it takes an hour or so.

As for the rest….it is unlikely that the Debian or YNH updates will go bad, but just in case I installed and setup Timeshift. With it I scheduled hourly and daily backups. Keep 6 hourly and 3 daily. It uses RSYNC to basically create backups of the entire system, on the same hardware. I chose to exclude the Home folder where the YNH data is stored (peertube videos, nextcloud files, etc..) – makes no sense to backup TB of that data when that data is already backedup on Borgbase.com.

So yah now I have system backups in case shit truly hits the fan.

Therefore with YNH + Borg + Timeshift you can have a safe server even if you go for a dedicated server.

We’ve looked into Proxmox too and it looks very promising. With it you can have a proper panel and control over your dedicated server. Snapshots, backups, etc.. Roma, the wonderful human, helped with testing Proxmox. However since this is something new and on top of the entire YNH install, we need more time to test and see if we can use it. For now I decided to go ahead without server snapshots for all of the reasons mentioned, and Proxmox is mostly useful for these cases where you can make snapshots in seconds.

So how to move big YNH backups?

My previous Webdock experience gave me a lot of experience about how to move YNH from one server to another. I took many notes and now I was ready. So everything was very smooth, but moving big backups is a bit different. Here’s how:

Our Peertube backup (archive) is 800GB in size. It is already backedup on Borgbase.com. So I connect the new server to my Borg repo, list the archives and then download the backup WITHOUT the data:

Replace _auto_friendica-2023-10-08_22:26 with the name of your archive and where you see “peertube” in the code, replace with the name of your app. For example my Peertube backup without the files is around 2GB in size. So tiny.

Then extract the data. Go to the folder where the data is stored: cd /home/yunohost.app/ Then extract the data with:

Again replace the _auto_peertube-2023-10-08_22:26 with the full name of your archive and “peertube” with the name of your app.

Took around 5 hours to download all of the Peertube data.

After that is done go to your YNH Backup panel to restore the archive as normal. Click it and restore!

One small issue: YNH thinks that it has to restore the entire 800GB and if you do not have that much storage space it will fail. Got to your archive folder (I use Webmin):

And edit the .json file associated with your backup archive. Modify this to whatever low number:

Then restore the normal way via the YNH panel.

Another issue….at times the ownership of the downloaded data is not correct. So for example for Peertube I had to change to peertube::www-data:

But that’s basically it for an app that has a small database and archive overall, but huge amounts of data.

If you are dealing with a huge database restore manually via the command line (SSH) with yunohost backup restore _auto_friendica-2023-10-08_22:26 --app friendica

That’s the main difference here for big backups. I wish they could all be done via that YNH panel….but seems unreliable for such massive archives…

Overall if it wasn’t for YNH I would give up. No TROM.tf for sure. YNH is brilliant I swear! Despite some hiccups here and there, it is amazing.

Conclusions and the future of trom.tf

I was forced to move to new hosting services and that was good because now I know that just with our Borg backups I can move anywhere in a matter of days. I also chose 2 different companies this time so to not put all eggs into one basket.

One thing we will need in the future for TROM.tf is diskspace. Everything else is more than enough. I tried to use Peertube with an Object Storage that you can always scale up but was not reliable. To me is so much easier and reliable to have the data stored on the same server.

Luckily with Hetzner we can add 2 more physical drives to our dedicated server. Here is a list of prices. Now we have enough, despite Timeshift’s backups taking up some 500GB. So we still have some 1.5TB to spare. Enough for 2 or so years I guess. And if we ever need we can add another 2TB for 17 Euros more a month. Or move to HDDs for storage and add up to 16TB or more for quite cheap.

Therefore I am double happy. One to move from Cuntabo, and second to be able to scale up TROM.tf and make it reliable for the years to come!!

Quick note: Hetzner so far did not ask me to send them a photo with my passport and my face, like the crazy Webdock people did….so far….will see…

Palestine : For a libertarian communist re-commitment to the BDS campaign

This text, adopted at the Federal Coordination meeting in March 2023, aims to revive the momentum and coordinate the UCL's involvement in the BDS France (Boycott Divestment Sanctions) campaign.

During its national meeting on January 14-15, 2023, the BDS France campaign against apartheid and colonialism in Palestine decided to raise the profile of its action and launch a campaign specifically against Carrefour, which supports illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine.
Signatory organizations of the BDS appeal, including UCL, are invited to take part in it. The UCL supports the struggle of the Palestinian people [1] for freedom from the colonial war that's being waged by the State of Israel. Israel is entering a new phase, with the arrival in power in Tel Aviv of a coalition of the right and far right, the ensuing provocations, the individual attacks launched out of desperation on Israeli settlements, the military bombings in retaliation, the threat of bankruptcy looming over the Palestinian Authority and the emergence of young resistance groups (such as the Nablus Battalion) independent of both Hamas and Fatah…

Despite facing repression under the Sarkozy-Hollande era (with the Alliot-Marie circular of February 12, 2010 penalizing boycotting Israel or Israeli settlements), despite divisions over tactics and methods [2], the BDS-France campaign continued: boycott of Puma, Axa, actions taken during the 2020 Tour de France (alongside the UCL) [3], against the participation of Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest...

Quick reminder about BDS: this international campaign was launched in 2004 by the whole of the Palestinian civil society (i.e. those living in Israel, in exile or in the Occupied Territories). Modelled
on the boycott campaign against South Africa in the 1980s, its aim is to demand, by peaceful means, the application of international law: put an end to occupation and colonization, tear down the West Bank barrier, end the Gaza blockade, give access to equal rights and the right for refugees to return (or receive fair compensation).

In France, BDS started off in June 2009, notably with campaigns against Agrexco [4], Orange (which ended up victorious), Veolia (a company that had been entrusted with building the Jerusalem tramway and was involved in the destruction of Arab neighborhoods, etc.).

The current campaign is aimed at the France-based multinational retail corporation Carrefour. Carrefour, through its partnership with the Israeli company Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan, both operating in illegal settlements, finds itself complicit in war crimes, occupation, settlement colonialism and apartheid under international law. Targeted for export, it is now also targeted for import. Campaigns are also being put into motion in Africa, in several Arab countries and in Asia, where Carrefour has a strong presence.

The UCL is a member of the BDS campaign, as are many anti-racist and trade union organizations (CNT, Solidaires, certain local branches of the CGT) in which libertarian communists actively participate. Here are several rather simple actions we take to support their efforts :
• On a broader, more general level : relay the BDS slogans on our social networks and communications media;
• At federal level: stick a small BDS logo on the back page of the newspaper and, on the home page of the website, a visual linking to a section compiling information and articles on the campaign, and invite our partners in the Anarkismo network to do the same;
• At local level: local groups may set up actions and "label" them BDS (as in 2020 for the Tour de France); they may also join forces with local BDS committees or raise funds with other signatory organizations.
Additionally, an international week—the Israeli Apartheid Week—is organized on a yearly basis every March (this year's edition took place from March 13 to 27). In the past years, it was mainly held on university campuses, with screenings, debates, etc. It ends with the Journée de la terre ('Land Day'), every March 30, which commemorates peasant resistance in the face of expropriation, most notably the Palestinian general strike of March 30, 1976 (during which 6 strikers were murdered).

A team is being put together and is to be given the mandate to :
• Organize the UCL's actions within BDS in a way that's in line with our federal guidelines on the matter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict ;
• Set up internal training courses on the Palestinian question, which has been losing ground in France - including in the social movement - since the 2010s.

The UCL's anti-colonialist commitment and anti-racist vigilance must be beyond reproach, to repel both any attempt at anti-Semitic intrusion and instrumentalization, and the Zionists' usual slander ('anti-Semitic', 'Islamo-leftist'), which the French state was also seen using in order to further stigmatize the far left, the Muslim minority and working-class neighborhoods.

CLARIFICATION OF THE TERM 'ZIONISM'

The term Zionism used here refers to the definition it was given in the "Against colonialism in Palestine, for a free and democratic Palestine" motion adopted in June 2020: The Israeli ruling class, and most of the political class, are deeply imbued with a nationalist and colonialist ideology, Zionism. This ideology was born against a backdrop of growing anti-Semitism and nationalism in Europe.
Unlike assimilationist or revolutionary movements, Zionist movements considered anti-Semitism to be inevitable for as long as Jews remained a minority everywhere, and their historical goal was to create a Jewish national majority in Palestine—which translated into the expulsion of Palestinians throughout the entirety of the colonial process, as well as a policy of ethnic cleansing.
In the continuation of that ideology, the current Israeli ruling class aims to maintain an ethno-nationalist state in which the national majority remains Jewish. The political project of part of this ruling class goes as far as advocating for the total exclusion of Arab and Druze minorities: the 2018 law on the "nation-state of the Jewish people" is the inescapable consequence of the policy that's been consistently pursued ever since 1948.
