I finished reading @Sasha 's book after reading a rough draft some 2-3 years ago. I wrote a review when she released the book but now that I finished it and it all is fresh in my mind I want to briefly say some condensed atom-sized thoughts about it, without spoiling it for those who have not read it.

This book can be deceiving. You may think it is about a small cute girl traveling around the world with very little money. And that is part of it, but the unique aspect of this book is the overall mental growth for Sasha. This is what I LOVED about it. To see how a human grows to understand how the world works and how that makes her react. All of the crazy and wonderful (at times scary) adventures are not just that, are part of the ingredients that create the cake.

And she is a wonderful cake.

The places that Sasha saw and got to experience make me feel like I lived in a cave my entire life. I bet many people will think that Sasha invented some of these stories because it is insane in a few years time to jump from tribe to tribe, meet locals, go live with them, have extraordinary experiences with them, have no money, then work a few months make a shit load of money, buy a car, live in the car; hitchhike the entire Europe, sleep in the middle of Australia, go and snowboard for free or little money on so many tall peaks from all around the world, become a divemaster, surf awesome waves in Hawaii, drive your car across the entire USA and swim with dolphins, sharks and manta rays.

Fucking shit! This human lived 55 lives in 15 years. You either get depressed at that, thinking like me that you have not experienced even 1% of what she experienced, or make you motivated to go see the world and free yourself from this trade based society (which also makes me want to do).

Sasha did a WONDERFUL job describing all of these places and experiences. No photos needed! And many of these adventures and places will forever live inside of my brain as if I was a close observer.

Best of all, in my view, is that now she signed a "contract" with me with this book, to join me in my battle! :) A battle of TROM vs Society! Her book is her contribution and there is more to follow!

With that she sandwiched her book perfectly - the beginning bun (prologue) that will give you a taste of what is about to come; in the middle are the many flavors of ingredients stacked neatly and chronologically on top of each other - some 300 pages of life; and lastly the top bun that perfectly brings it all together in a perfect taste, connecting the dots and making all of the ingredients and the bottom bun part of one big thing.

A book. But a book is not simply a lot of words or a pile of paper. It is memories, emotions, worldviews, and a lot of work to put them all together. Her book is a story that spans over 15 years. But these years are hardly what most people experience on this planet.
She was born in Russia but at age 8 had to move to the United States and deal with a new world. New language, new culture, new people; her mom, her bother, and some pets. Her father went back to Russia, and that affected her a lot.
A mountain of changes to absorb as a kid which led her to a world of drugs and anger.
She details these struggles which at times feel like hard to believe stories – a 17 year old girl selling drugs in New York, crazy mushroom trips and adventurous thefts.
But she managed to pull herself together and change her life for the better. She was not impressed by the imaginary borders humans create and call countries, so she went on flying like a free bird :). From Canada to Mexico, Australia to Europe, Russia to Thailand. 15 years of adventures with almost no money. Because money won’t stop Small Sasha :).
A way to discover the world and yourself.
When you get to experience so many cultures and places, you can understand much better what humans are, and what makes them who the are.
The places she saw and the people she met are extraordinarily described in the book, in a way that you feel like you are there. No photos needed. You’ll laugh, wonder, or feel uncomfortable reading some of her uncensored experiences.
It is a galaxy of stories that she had to put together using notes from the past, photos, and her own memories stored in the mushy pile of cells we call the brain.
She managed to compile this massive story in a way that it is super fun to follow, but also to get a feeling of how she grew a mind in all of these years.
That mental growth and her experiences, made her realize how fucked up this society is and how much we are destroying this environment and the creatures in it.
She started to volunteer for some organizations over the years, eventually getting closer to the project I made, TROM. And so here we are, a book later, spending our lives together.
I cannot describe how wonderful this book is, how emotional and funny. So much fun, but also a lot of reality check for many people who are going to have their values challenged.
She crafted this book so much, that at times you feel like Carl Sagan, David Attenborough and George Carlin contributed to the book :).
A wonderful read! A massive CONGRATULATIONS to Sasha for the immense work she put into this. I know too well how for the past 4 years she worked so much on this book that it almost put our relationship under a big question mark. I never saw anyone putting so much effort into anything. It was too intense!
But now it is OVER. Finally! I thought I will never see this happen. Wow!
After so many years of work, and almost no money, she is putting the book for free on her website bigworldsmallsasha.com/ in digital format, despite us not having much money to make a life for ourselves on this planet. But of course, if you want to support her (us) you can buy the physical copy too. Or donate if you can.
I helped design the entire cover and I am quite proud of it :).

Les dernières annonces du Premier ministre à Viry-Châtillon constituent une attaque sans précédent contre la jeunesse. En réaction à la mort d’un jeune dans une rixe, et sous la pression des médias et des chefs de l’extrême droite, Gabriel Attal à dévoilé une série de mesures sensées restaurer « l’ordre et l’autorité » à l’école et dans les familles.

Parmi ces mesures, l’ajout d’une mention dans les dossiers Parcoursup devant sanctionner les « protestations et contestations de l’autorité de l’école » de la part des « fauteurs de troubles ». Il est évident que cette mention n’a pas pour but d’enrayer une quelconque « ultraviolence des jeunes » mais de réprimer les luttes lycéennes, via un mécanisme vicieux : les élèves considéré·es comme « contestataires » paieront toute leur vie le prix de leur engagement en se voyant chuter dans les listes d’attente des formations qu’ils et elles désirent intégrer.

De plus, le gouvernement prévoit d’imposer des horaires hallucinants aux collégien·nes en commençant par les « zones sensibles » : 8h-18h chaque jour au collège. Cela représente 50 heures par semaine !

Enfin le niveau de répression policière et judiciaire des jeunes grimpe en flèche avec plusieurs annonces : la responsabilité financière des parents vis-à-vis des « bêtises » de leurs enfants, de même que de nouvelles peines : « les travaux d’intérêt éducatifs » (basiquement, du travail forcé) auxquels seraient contraints les mineur·es de moins de 15 ans.

Fantasmes d’extrême droite

Ces mesures répondent aux fantasmes d’extrême droite d’une « jeunesse ultraviolente », nourris des images des révoltes de juin 2023. Elles s’ajoutent à une explosion des signalements sur des élèves pour « radicalisation » ayant conduit un certain nombre d’élèves au poste de police ou garde-à-vue tandis que le dialogue et la confiance se brisent avec le corps enseignant. Nous sommes également 20 ans après la loi de Avril 2004 d’interdiction du port du foulard dans les lycées qui constituait un premier point de rupture et de stigmatisation de élèves musulmans au regard d’une laïcité instrumentalisée.

Mais ce que les réactionnaires refusent de voir, c’est que ces violences qui existent bel et bien sont le produit d’une violence sociale exercée par une bourgeoisie ensauvagée. Personne ne se pose la question de comprendre l’origine de ces violences. Elles sont le résultat direct des coupes budgétaires et de la démolition du système scolaire orchestrées par le même gouvernement.

L’État ne laisse comme option que la lutte

Ce que montrent ces annonces, c’est que le pouvoir est terrifié par la jeunesse. Cette force sociale qu’il est incapable de maîtriser malgré ses nombreuses tentatives (SNU, Parcoursup), il ne peut que la réprimer. Incapable de prendre en compte les aspirations de la jeunesse, en matière écologique, sociale et démocratique et sourd à toute revendication, l’État ne laisse comme option que la lutte.

Ce dont nous, jeunes, avons besoin, c’est de davantage de classes, de professeur·es de personnels, pas d’uniforme ni de sanctions ! Et pour que ces revendications passent des mots aux réalités, seule la lutte paiera face à un État toujours plus autoritaire. Les collèges et lycées du 93 montrent, par leur mobilisation exemplaire, la voie vers une école plus libre.

It is funny, in Spain if you want to legally trade your own services, say you make websites, then you have to become "autonomo" - like self-employed, and pay between 60 to 100 euros a month taxes even if you make no money as self-employed. hahaha. That after you will have to pay a lawyer some 60 more euros a month to deal with the shitload of papers and nonsense.

You know these "taxes" in theory seem like a decent idea: take a bit of money from each citizen, to then put that money into healthcare and other things that will be free for these "citizens".

In practice it is shitshow of corruption and making the rich richer. And a huge pain in the ass for everyone. I would not mind contributing 20% of my "income" to a tribe if I get free healthcare and other benefits, but only if it was made simple and you could see the effect of your contribution.

Spain seems like the capital of papers and nonsense. But the entire world is like that one way of another...

Oof man that sounds like a bad deal for poor folks trying to make some money for themselves. If you have a thriving business then you're good, but for poor folks with small self-employment projects this will be a pain to deal with.

Ces derniers jours ont été marqués par une nette aggravation des atteintes à la liberté syndicale, aux libertés d’expression et de manifestation. L'accumulation convergente de divers moyens de répression et d'intimidation contre des acteurs du débat public, en raison de leur positionnement sur les termes du conflit israélo-palestinien, constitue une limitation inacceptable du pluralisme démocratique.

Après l’appel à interdiction systématique des « manifestations pro-palestiniennes » lancé par Gérald Darmanin à l’automne 2023, immédiatement recadré par le Conseil d’État, des centaines d’amendes et de nombreux placements en garde à vue ont été décidés, notamment à l’encontre de personnes racisées.

Les atteintes aux libertés ont désormais franchi de nouveaux caps : l’interdiction administrative – finalement suspendue – de la marche du 21 avril 2024 et l’interdiction par arrêté préfectoral, notamment pour risque de « trouble à l’ordre public » d’une conférence organisée par l’association Libre Palestine ».

À ces interdictions s’ajoutent les convocations par les services de police de l’une de ses intervenantes, par ailleurs candidate aux élections européennes ainsi que d’une présidente de groupe parlementaire, lesquelles interviennent après l’ouverture de plusieurs autres enquêtes judiciaires contre des militant·es, membres d’organisations syndicales (CGT, Solidaires, Sud Rail, Sud Aérien) et politiques pour des faits d’apologie du terrorisme.

Dans ce contexte, nous exprimons notre plus vive préoccupation devant des interprétations extensives et aléatoires du délit d'apologie du terrorisme et de la notion d’ « ordre public », ayant pour objet ou pour effet d’intimider lourdement des militants associatifs, syndicaux ou politiques.

Nous tenons ainsi à alerter l’ensemble des acteurs institutionnels concernés, de même que l’opinion publique, quant à l’existence de mécanismes de procédures bâillons ayant pour conséquence, in fine, l’éviction de certain·es militant·es associatifs, syndicaux ou politiques du débat public.

L’accumulation de décisions de ce type de la part des autorités administratives, policières et judiciaires s'inscrit dans un mouvement plus large qui tend à réprimer des formes toujours plus diversifiées de contestation sociale ou politique. Ces tentatives d’intimidation se font au demeurant à l’aide d’outils juridiques toujours plus nombreux (interdictions de manifester, gardes-à-vue préventives, tentatives de dissolutions ou retraits d’agrément ou de subventions d’associations, etc.). Leur dévoiement est d’ailleurs dénoncé par l'ONU, le Conseil de l'Europe, le Défenseur des droits et les organisations de défense des droits humains.

Les moyens préventifs, coercitifs et répressifs ne doivent pas servir à orienter ou restreindre le débat public. Nous appelons l’ensemble des magistrat·es à redoubler de vigilance afin de ne pas réduire la justice à un outil de censure du débat démocratique, alors qu’elle est censée être le dernier rempart des libertés publiques et individuelles.

Nous réaffirmons son rôle fondamental de contrôle du respect des garanties prévues par le code de procédure pénale et par la Convention européenne des droits de l’Homme, spécifiquement lorsqu’il est fait recours à des mesures privatives de liberté telles que la garde-à-vue. Le principe d’interprétation stricte de la loi pénale commande aux magistrat·es de se prémunir contre toute interprétation extensive des textes d’incriminations de ces infractions.

Nous exprimons, par suite, notre attachement à une conception ouverte et équilibrée de la liberté d’expression et de contestation en démocratie, constitutionnellement protégées.

Flatpaks are really outrageous in size...I have tried to use flatpaks for the past months but man o man....hundreds of MB for each package, takes forever to update them even on my 1GB internet connection. The idea is great, but this is such a huge downside that I cannot see how it is going to make the flatpaks easier to use than normal packaging.

Look at this for ungoogled chromium:

Had to download around 4-5 GB....insane!

probably really depends on your usecase. For my slow internet connection, I really love how Flatpaks are an exception to the "partial upgrades are not supported" problem. Just because I need to install discord it does not mean that I want to do a 2,3GB update to my system, my friend is waiting for me.

A lot of those sizes are a worse case scenario. If you have shared requirements with other installed apps, flatpak will deduplacate requirement and save space.

Sometimes it is just bad packagers not cleaning up the builds. I package with flatpak, mainly legacy applications, and mine never usually get that explosive in size. Chromium is about 350MB installed with apt.

@hydrian That's a neat theory, but in practice Murphy's law applies and every version of a given library eventually gets pulled in.

Talking with the Flatpak faithful feels similar to talking with crypto bros.

crypto -> "We have a complete record of transactions that will solve all monetary problems!"

flatpak -> "We have a complete graph of dependencies that will solve all software deployment problems!"

@wickedsmoke I know what you mean. I package in Flatpak. More than a few are sloppy about cleaning up their builds.

FYI each Flatpak app is like a Git repo and an update just downloads the files that actually changed. The files of all installed apps are stored together in a content-addressable storage, then hardlinked one or more times to form each app.

OSTree-based host OSs like Fedora Atomic work in the same way and hopefully in the future the files will be shared between the host OS and Flatpak apps too.

When you install a Flatpak, it will need runtimes (GNOME, KDE, Freedesktop...). These are the ones that really take up disk space. But the good news is that it looks big if you install just one Flatpak application, but the more you install, the more they'll use the same runtimes already installed, and the less disk space they'll occupy.

And no, ungoogled-chromium doesn't require 4-5 GB, just 153 MB...

How come on my system it had to download 4-5GB? And yes I use many flatpaks but that didn't seem to help. And this is not the first time am seeing these massive downloads.

You can use the flatpak list --columns=name,size command to see the disk space used by all your flatpaks and runtimes.

And if your package manager doesn't do it automatically, you can also use this command to uninstall old runtimes you no longer need: flatpak uninstall --unused

@florke64 Why do you think native packages are going away? Especially when flatpaks has all these downsides like taking too much space and not respecting the user's theme or integrating well with the system. Flatpak is there as an option but you don't need to use it if you don't want to, I personally never use it and I'm fine..... 🤷 I'm not sure about Ubuntu tho 'cause I'm on Arch, but I'd be surprised if Debian ever gets rid of native packaging.

"takes forever to update them even on my 1GB internet connection"? huh?... you're on gigabit internet and it's taking forever? honestly that's not possible... Are you sure you have gigabit internet? or do you mean that your lan port is a gigabit port?..

I use flatpaks and it's really not that big of a deal (plus it happens in the background anyone, so most people will pretty never notice it)

Yes I know very well what connection I have but since it has to download around 4-5 GB in that case, it takes a long long time. It depends the server where it is pulling these updates from I guess.... Maybe that particular package is worse than other flatpaks, but I have noticed this issue with long download times and huge download sizes on multiple computers and multiple flatpaks.

@futureisfoss @florke64 easy of use. Flatpaks are much easier to use for the average 'new to linux' user. Plus they actually have a proper permission system (flatseal) unlike native packages.

definitely it's outrageous. it's that way by design. personal example: i don't run KDE but wanted to try okular, and ran the heck away and removed it when i saw it had installed 48,954 files at a cost of 820MB. this is just ridiculous...for a friggin' PDF reader?

@futureisfoss Interesting points. Inconveniences like theming are going to improve over time. Transition will happen gradually. I don't see Debian dropping *.deb support. However, I can imagine Debian shipping Flatpak applications.

@thibaultmol @florke64 I'm not sure about ease of use because most GUI distros have a software center these days for installing native and flatpak apps - so both are easy now. The permission system is interesting and could have some privacy/security improvements, but this containerization can also create issues with theming and such. A friend of mine recently had issues with playing games on Bottles because of flatpak's sandboxing - so in certain situations it can get in your way.

@florke64 Yeah I think the most likely scenario is native packaging and Flatpaks coexisting - which is already the case for most distros now.
