I completely agree with this article. AI doesn't replace tech jobs as much as provides convinient excuse to bully expensive engineers into submission.

I have a different take:

* AI will not replace writing code, we're just going through a hype phase, the outcome of which will confirm AI produces code that is uneconomical to fix.

BUT

* Coding will become a commodity skill, with a very large talent pool, and the vast vast majority of coding needs being vanilla bread-and-butter requiring no specialist expertise. This will mean wages for coders will drop, and as individuals they will have to accept a drastic drop in people treating them as special. Lots of egos will be bruised in the transition.

BUT ALSO

* the value of people who can combine technical talent with understanding people and their needs, understanding product design, .. will remain high. These are the people who solve problems and build valuable products. This combination of skills has not been prevalent in the coding community, some might persuasively argue.

If you want to feel special, and earn lots, become a plumber, a dentist.

2029: senior software engineer (hired back to the previous company by a very desperate exec)

LLMs will never EVER become AI and "vibe coding" will never ever produce equal or better results to actual coders. These are hard facts, and the bubble will pop. You can only carry the con so far and since it will never ever produce positive results, eventually those who are fooling themselves are going to have to let it go or be overrun by those willing to accept the reality.

The only question is when will the pop finally come. (My belief is that it's actually much much closer to popping than this timeline. I honestly am starting to wonder if it might well pop this very year even...)

Current contract comes to an end in a couple of months... and I'm not renewing it... because the offer was insulting and they're trying to push AI into it when it would endanger and compromise security.

Funnily enough... the client has expressed interest in having me do some consulting work for them... on the software I was managing development of.

And somewhere, deep in the bowels of a large finance company, one of the old farts who still know COBOL and FORTRAN is tapping away on a keyboard.

with respect to Oracle, the job cuts may only provide a premonition of the eventual crash of that company.
