not sure where to post feature requests but I've noticed a growth in promotions on Pixelfed. Is that something to be encouraged, ignored or discouraged?
Personally, I'm mainly bothered by commercialization, particularly if it overwhelms the other content, so I'd be up for discouraging it.
Also, Markdown (raised by others previously) seems like a good, user centred way for people to express themselves efficiently. The world of comms elsewhere has evolved this richness (bold, italic, lists & bullets etc), so why not the Fediverse too?

When facebook started afaik it was not about connecting people, it was about rating women. (so I highly doubt Zuck ever wanted to "make the internet better" and I wouldn't open a door to this guy under any circumstances.) That aside the open letter of course is nice.
Awesome, but the one catch here is that he probably didn't develop (with other people, not alone) Facebook for idealistic reasons. It's more likely that he wanted to get laid, and help other horny college dudes get laid. The original Facebook has been credibly accused of being a stalking app, and I find that very easy to believe. Nothing he's done has indicated to me that he actually gives a shit about users, and nothing he says has any meaning for me without evidence to back it up.
I noticed something similar a year or so ago. Any time I would share photos of my kids with family members or whatever, I would create a public share link to the album on my Nextcloud server, with an expiration date, and then share that link on Facebook. All of a sudden one day I started noticing that the posts would get deleted a few minutes after I posted them, then they started blocking me from posting the links outright.
To be honest I would be really surprised if this was on purpose and not a malfunction of their spam filters. Pixelfed isn't in the same ballpark as Instagram, struggling to think how having a company policy to filter out its links would be worth the bad publicity - for basically no reason.

The market manipulation makes me angry. The political corruption makes me angry. The trolls make me angry. The hate makes me angry. The transphobia makes me angry...
I choose anger because it feels righteous. Because it energizes. Because it lets me point fingers, dunk and scream. I choose it far more often than I'd like. And every time I choose it, I spiral.
It's recognizing that anger is a tool, not a master.
Here's the real cost: carrying that anger means I can't carry anything else. No space for creation. No energy for the work that matters. No capacity for change.

I once read that "Anger is a secondary emotion. It's what you feel when you fail to process through other emotions". That helps me realize how useless anger is, and to look for the real emotions.
Edit: note that those other emotions can drive serious motivation too, the way people claim anger can.
Terry Pratchett has lately become a kind of role model to me, because he took his rage and turned it into humour.
A thing I read somewhere a long time ago is that anger doesn't scare the authoritarians because it's undirected. What scares them is humour, because humour is anger under control.

I think this is mainly a function of social media use, as in the development of a sometimes civic anger that cannot be aimed at civic good.
Aristotle talks about righteous indignation, as in the golden mean between the extremes of passivity and incontinent rage, as being angry at the right things in the right ways to the right extent. In the past this anger provided a function of civic improvement in the face of social outrages.
Thanks for this. I have to remind myself that anger, while a handy armor from grief and fear, energizes me more to wreck something than to build something.
