Frankly I'm shocked at how quickly freedom of speech flies out the window. When I was in school, I was taught that freedom of speech is sacred and our ancestors died for it! Am I the only one who took it to heart?

Serious question: What will they achieve from this even if one did go through with it? Ain't no-one sharing gobmint ID with strangers, very few people (used to) use gobmint names online (with good reasons!), so what will they get?
They are trying to con people into giving their credit card details as a form of verification. Then they can drain the card of money.
The reason they're doing this is because so many sites are actually asking for this, for example Apple is now demanding all its UK users give credit card details to verify their age. This gives scammers a really good cover to do scams.
Fediverse platforms don't do this, but not everyone realises this.

it will also create a market for "age" verified accounts. If there will be minor only platforms it will enable predators to easily get in contact with minors. Without doubt that those are in fact minors.
Also trying to buy such accounts leaves people open to scams. So if a minor tried to buy one to access the big people internet, they are easy targets for a scam. Besides being heavily targeted by big-tech. Its not like they couldn't possibly know that it is a minor and their privacy is absolutely not something they're going to honor with their track record.

it will also create a market for "age" verified accounts. If there will be minor only platforms it will enable predators to easily get in contact with minors. Without doubt that those are in fact minors.
Also trying to buy such accounts leaves people open to scams. So if a minor tried to buy one to access the big people internet, they are easy targets for a scam. Besides being heavily targeted by big-tech. Its not like they couldn't possibly know that it is a minor and their privacy is absolutely not something they're going to honor with their track record.

The internet can be dangerous, always has been and always will be. Teaching kids that they should share their private things with everyone who asks is the most dangerous president you could set. Think about it. If our kids are taught that if someone asks for your I'd they would quickly share it without thought. What if a predator would ask for proof in a chat. What if a shady company would? What if a shady porn site would? Child traffickers will have a field day knowing the brand and stock of their prey. Even if they couldn't buy that information outright.
In ye olden days it was tons of fun trolling predators. Why not teach our children that joy? Have them be capable of making their own journey. Think back to what you wanted as a kid. Then, and only then would I like to hear your opinion.
In the EU though, the official identity wallet should allow to verify age without sharing other personal data. There are implementations of this at least in Denmark (AltID) and Netherlands (Yivi).

That part still doesn’t sit well with me, the whole Nobel Prize thing, all of it. But one thing does sit well, very well: when the work fell to each of us, we all started doing it. All of us.
I’ve felt a lot of things during the ICE siege, but one thing I’ve never felt is alone.
I used to wonder whether, say, the French resistance or the Underground Railroad could ever form in the modern US today. I don’t wonder that anymore. I watched it happen. I made it happen. •We• made it happen. And my part was so small! And yet…we made it happen.
Because we knew that if we didn’t, nobody, nobody would.

Also, we now use the term sexual assault to go beyond the old term rape because rape didn't cover a lot of actions that are sexual assau!ts, and wouldn't be punishable as rape. For example, a lot of places, forced oral sex wasn't counted as rape under the law since there was no penis to vaginal penetration. Which also meant forced anal sex was not legally rape either.

Thanks for this. I'm not in the US but I think we may need this perspective in Australia pretty soon. The problems won't be exactly the same here, but the answers will be.
Fascism has engulfed the US decades ago but US Americans have always been rewarded and bribed just enough to be completely ignorant of their own political reality. It is so shocking as someone who my mom is from Iraq and dad is from Iran see Americans grapple with "coming" or "developing" fascism after watching my family get wiped off the face of the earth by Americans. The only way you can think that America is not a fascist empire is if you don't think people in other countries are human. The US empire has killed over a million Iraqis. Millions of Vietnamese, hundreds of thousands of Afghans, installed fascist dictatorships in Indonesia, Chile, and in dozens of other countries around the world. To think that it is "developing" fascism is just ignorance of who you are.

That was one of the first books of poetry I ever bought for myself as a new young adult and poetry student, many moons ago. Very powerful. Eye opening for my privileged, protected young self. Big impact on my political development.
Highly recommend. Also her translation of Claribel Alegría's poems Flowers from the Volcano.
@Huntn00 Laws have been used to protect those in power and the rich as they oppressed the poor. When a commoner breaks the law, he's instantly charged and punished by the authorities but when when the one in power breaks the law, it's justified to make it look that he was right to do it. But a solution without laws still turns into chaos so no one should be above the law and that's how we can preserve justice.
I sometimes wonder if such movies, with their strong theme that citizens are powerless collateral damage as the powerful battle each other, that they train voters to think they can sit on the sidelines & be Monday Morning Quarterbacks, second guessing but not participating.
