While I love the recent Bluesky rally, I also want to remind everyone that Mastodon is the only major social media that is properly decentralized, billionaire-proof and VC-free for now. I get that most people couldn't care less about protocols, but if you do, I recommend maintaining a presence here :)

And even if some future VC were to offer Eugen a truckload of $$ (I think he's mentioned being approached by certain money-having parties and turning them down), but even if he were to take it, the larger Fediverse would live on through the variety of forks and other AP-compatible platforms out there. Mastodon shouldn't be resting on its laurels though. Needs many improvements urgently:
- multiple domains per instance - support for all #ActivityPub object types, event if minimal - support math notation - simpler tech stack for smaller instances (solid_queue etc) - Better support for alternative user interfaces (eg: Whalebird which emulates Slack/Discord and Elk that emulates Twitter)
And one step back, Akkoma doesn't want to implement multiple domains per instance. Worse, a single dev closed the issue without any discussions of pros and cons, indicating that it's mostly a single-person project. 🫤

Hello! After your video I've had some success moving some workflows to Inkscape, GIMP, and Krita (and command lime options) from proprietary software like Affinity and Clip Studio Paint but one that is more difficult is Scribus. I've been able to make some basic documents but the tools for tables and making hyperlinks seem very clunky. Was wondering if you have any tips or use something else?
@travisj Awesome! So I wish I had words of comfort, but Scribus is rough. In part, like InDesign and QuarkXPress, desktop publishing workflows are just weird. They make sense to people who run big presses, not the rest of us. That's not an excuse for the difficulty creating a simple table, but take comfort if you are struggling... (1/n)
@travisj What I would suggest is getting comfortable with Inkscape and when you need the color accuracy that Scribus will give you, then export a PDF and import it into Scribus. There you can go to Edit > Colors and Fills and replace the RGB colors with the CMYK colors you want. @doctormo is working on CMYK in Inkscape. When he is done, you may not find you need to use Scribus as much. This is how I used Scribus for a couple years until I got more comfortable with its quirks.
@travisj If you are not aiming for specific CMYK colors, but just need to satisfy the printer, you can also run a Ghostscript command like this on a PDF you create in Inkscape:
It will do a bunch of auto conversions, so it's kind of a roll of the dice, but it checks the CMYK box if necessary. I have done this on pretty large projects where the brand colors weren't specific.
@travisj That's just an example, you'll want to fine-tune such a command to suit your purposes. Take note that with this method your RGB black is going to turn into 0 0 0 100 CMYK, rather than a rich black like 60 40 40 100, so it won't be super dark.
I don't now how far you are into your career, so pardon me if you know this stuff already know.
In short, there's not a simple solution quite yet, but it's very doable.
These are great suggestions, thank you. I've honestly never tried making a table in Inkscape but now I'll have to try it (and the Ghostscript CMYK conversion). I personally don't mind Affinity Publisher, but I was trained in InDesign during my Diploma so it's close. Scribus is just lagging behind in some features (but modifying the XML directly is cool though). I'm impressed with how far Inkscape has come in the last 5-10 years, when CMYK conversion happens it'll be even better.
@travisj I can't say Inkscape is great at tables, but it's less infuriating to fake it 😉
I'm hoping Scribus will have its moment. Print hasn't died and I don't think it ever will. With your background you may even have some ideas to share. I don't know anyone on that team, but they do exist!

@lps couldn't agree more... the tyranny of reverse chronological order is by far my biggest issue with this app. when i found @pkreissel's original implementation of #fedialgo it was like manna from heaven.

I don't understand the "progressively add other instances" part. If there's just a dialog box to have the user set the instance, how would this be something Google or Apple would scrutinize? I can totally see them scrutinizing instances that are added in to the app itself, but allowing all instances via dialog, I don't see how that would be scrutinized since it's no different than a browser's address bar or any other fediverse software that does nothing until you punch in an instance for it to connect to.
@kinetix @nicolay_lilicre I agree with you, so I think we'll add this custom bar soon but it's still a risk because store validation doesn't always follow a "logical" approach: big web browsers may have more rights than a small new app.
I'm sorry but this is horrible. It's obvious that the user experience isn't the priority because if it was then connecting to ones own instance would have been the first thing you added.
This is nothing more then a glorified search tool that doesn't even work that well. I couldn't find a single video from my own collection.

it was fun to find my employer's instance almost immediately after using the search bar. Looking at the feedback so far it does seem strange not to be able to find other instances directly by their hostname/url
Tried to login to our instance of bonn.video, does not work. I think that’s what most admins are expecting first, so they can tell their users the good news. But this is now a showstopper. We will wait.

very frustrating that the first priority here wasn’t making it possible to log into an instance, or at least manually add your favorites. Trying to be optimistic here but this preview is unusable for me (literally none of the instances I watch videos from are here), and seems like it’s taking a very “walled garden” approach that feels antithetical to the whole point of the federated net

No, apple devices are required to use the managed app store, however an iOS app was promised last year (joinpeertube.org/news/peertube…)
I know several people who *want* to use peertube regularly, but the lack of a mobile app is a barrier to entry. Currently there *no* iOS peertube client but several Android ones (Thorium, P2Play, etc), it is a serious problem for adoption that half the mobile market has no native app
@engiqueering Sorry I misunderstood you. Yes, the iOS version of the app is planned and we already have a working beta (as you can see on framaforms.org/peertube-mobile…). We're currently experiencing issues with the App Store validation unfortunately...
I've been working with the beta and have very much been enjoying it. I hope you get the App Store validation resolved, I'm glad to know the full iOS release is still in the works 👍
I just submitted the form with all the things I had issues with. It needs a lot of improvement, but it's still a good start in my opinion. What works best is the video player itself, the entire rest of the app should undergo a major overhaul in my opinion.

@alton @lps Makes sense. Will you have to check off and validate every instance to be allowed on the App Store? Guessing on each instance the usual stuff will be restricted.
I'm a little confused. Are you saying that you HAD to present the app to Google and Apple as a search tool for only a handful of instances to get approval for further development?
The limited number of instances is because Google and Apple's store are very touchy about the content of new apps from new devs, and we want to get though the first publication process.
The log in is not in the beta test release because we are working on it and plan to add it in the -near- future.
probably the biggest feature immediately missing is the ability to manually add instances. That makes it unusable to me, unfortunately. Looking forward to seeing it improve.
@Hex I agree 100%. As it stands the mobile browser experience is better then what they are showing us today. Which seems to be nothing more then a search engine that only searches select instances. I couldn't find my instance or any of the 267 videos I have on it.

Not sure how this is considered Beta when one can’t even login to their own instance. Not sure what this app would be trying to accomplish without that being there.

I have a distinct feeling that most users will have no interest in actually joining a peertube instance if they only want to comment on videos, create playlists. They could simply subscribe from Mastodon and this would remove the "what is an instance? This is too complicated " that we heard adnausem about Mastodon.
@dansup also please don't release this to the Playstore or iOs before the hardcore fans give input and help fine-tune it .. if mainstream users of Youtube apps try this and get confused, they won't come back:
@dansup see what #freetube is doing as an app, it's super concise and easy to use, all added features are in tabs or submenus, only basic usage is on the main page. Maybe it could be used/forked and updated to suit #peertube ?

@dbat if I got it correctly the connection is directly between peers when possible, relays are used only when it is not possible to stablish a direct connection, which is the same for virtually any other #p2p app out there with the use of STUN/TURN servers, etc
@dbat @adbenitez both STUN and TURN (see post for links) are used to facilitate a P2P device2device connection. It is similar conceptually how WebRTC works, which establishes peer to peer connections in web browsers. However, a webxdc app developer does not need to deal with any of this. This is very different from WebRTC API in browsers. Webxdc.joinRealtimeChannel() is a very simple high level API. We care for all the gory details of connection management. Hope this helps a bit
@dbat sure. Maybe a video is a good form for visualizing what happens? We are not really into video production so any help there appreciated. Our post was mostly geared towards curious users or would be users, and then to developers who might join #webxdc app developments because that is what all users benefit from immeditatly.
Fyi we are operating on a shoe-string budget and up against corporations with deep pockets with marketing/outreach departments outnumbering all our development teams.

It's a lot to take-in and illustrations are very helpful for that. You need not make a video, just try to diagram the process from Bob to Alice (or however it applies.)

@ditol yes, network effects are a known problem. Ultimately adoptions depends on people finding good reasons -- today's realtime-P2P feature is maybe well on a path of providing good reasons to giving things a try for particular purposes (e.g. some families do shopping/to-do lists and really like it etc.)
