post your images with alt text or some guy will repost your image with alt text and steal all your clout

It believes in children's capacity for wonder but also introduces paradoxes, nonsense and absurdity, in a way that is accessible but not condescending.
The Queen of Hearts is terrible and silly, a villain and a figure of fun. Multi facetted. Most of the characters are, as are most of the situations.
Jan Ε vankmajerβs film, Alice, is a surreal, stop frame animation interpretation of the story. It's brilliant but not the same as the Disney version so maybe watch without any kids first (it's not gruesome or porno, just, weird).
Omigosh, the sweet potato chipotle chili saga has commenced! I must thank @davepolaschek@writing.exchange or maybe heβs this other Dave? @davepolaschek@bookstodon.com, drat I hope the right Dave sees this post. Iβm pretty sure someone else also helped me to figure out how to turn 3 1/2 pounds of pork roast into diced pieces for this chili.
I didnβt have a mother who liked to cook or bake, so I mostly learned from books, and later in my 40βs had the internet to see all those food blogs and videos. I have serious blanks in doing something in recipe directions that cause me to stop still until I can parse it out. In this case, I just didnβt connect that of course one cuts the roast in slabs and then proceeds. Doh. So, photo presents my astounding Aha! moment with the pork roast. Then next photo part of my mess all over the counters. So many ingredients. But so far I am super excited an hour into simmering. The aroma is amazing. #Food #Chili #Cooking #ThanksForYourHelp #Meat

Just spent a couple hours on a test run of my new cider press. Apples grown in my backyard, harvested last week, and now pressed into cider.
I like fresh cider, not planning on fermenting it. I am told the use of "cider" for unfermented apple drink is a US thing? Let me know, I guess. Hereabouts it means either an alcoholic beverage *or* unfiltered apple juice.
I made half a gallon as a trial run (far more than is in the jar in the picture here), to make sure I had everything down before committing. The press really wants to do twice this many apples in one go; next time!
Came out incredible - genuinely the best I've ever had, excepting not even my grandfather's (who owned an orchard - I used to help him press cider every autumn).
Video of the press in action in next post.
#seattle #gardening #apple (a far more interesting kind of apple than the tech company, yes I know what this tag usually means, fuck your megacorp and all the others)

what a sweet little post. Was fearing some kind of twist at the end, glad it wasn't the case, LOL.
The only thing is that now I'll have trouble visualizing you as a red lamp π
For some reason we veered off topic and started talking about food and eating while poor.
It was good for me to hear that the years we had little money aren't bad memories for her.
She says she remembers how we survived with pride. I couldn't believe that she as a small child remembers me buying 100 lbs. of potatoes at a time, flour in bulk and bartering for fresh eggs. Our meat came from cans and was dubious at best. It is no wonder she became a vegetarian.
She fondly remembered large skillets of corned beef hash and of my homemade biscuits covered with creamed salty meats.
There was always enough and we sat down together thankful that we weren't going to bed hungry.
Evaporating any guilt I've hung on to by choosing to remember the food was plentiful and not that bad.
She is a good kid.

in reply to Jess πΊ & • • •I mostly disagree with the idea that it's fine to repost someone's image when they don't have alt txt. It seems hinky to do that (even with attribution)...like it's something AI would do.
Would it not be better to add an Alt4You description in the comments or just not boost the image?
I'm a big believer and practitioner of alt txt, but something seems off about just presuming one can commandeer someone else's image. The exception is popular memes, which seem more like fair game, imo.

Either the main post text or the alt text includes acknowledgement of the original poster.
This approach may feel too passive-aggressive or even hostile for you, and I'm not saying that you or anyone else must use it. All I'm saying is that I no longer see the alt text that kind people add to the comments when a person like Robert Reich posts yet another picture without alt text. I muted him long ago.

in reply to Lkdc • • •@Lkdc furthermore, even if all of that wasn't the case, edits to alt text don't necessarily federate! (or at least not as effectively)

in reply to xyhhx π«© • • •Alt text edits do federate as far as I know, let's give it a try.
EDIT: Can you see the edited alt text where the second part of it mentions editing?
EDIT 2: I've just checked this from a remote server, the edited alt text has definitely federated.
Fedi.Tips
Unknown parent • • •@xyhhx @fembot @Lkdc
I've not heard of alt texts having problems about federation?
There isn't much more I can do to prove this except test it and see what happens π
xyhhx π«©
Unknown parent • • •@fembot @FediTips i didn't say they categorically don't federate...? the fact that these edits federated from social. growyourown.services to mstdn.social this time doesn't really prove anything

in reply to Fedi.Tips • • •@FediTips have you ever noticed replies missing from a post? or that an account has a different profile pictures from different instances? it's exactly the same
i don't think users in this thread making edits and checking proves anything, but if you try posting something on an account with less reach and don't tag anybody, i suspect any form of edits (alt text included) may or may not reach disparate servers that have few connections
you see single-user instances regularly ask people to boost posts as wide as they can to assist with federation for exactly this reason

I was tagged into this thread with a request to tell people that edits don't federate. The question I was asked was "If the process doesn't work, why are we doing it?"
I'm saying the editing process does work, that's why people are encouraged to edit their posts to add alt texts.
As far as I know editing to add alt text does work most of the time. I have never received any questions from people asking why their alt text edit didn't federate.

"i suspect any form of edits (alt text included) may or may not reach disparate servers that have few connections"
Edits for a post reach all servers that have federated that post.
"single-user instances ask people to boost posts as wide as they can to assist with federation for exactly this reason "
Boosting posts does not help with federation at all. It just spreads that post, nothing else. I don't know why people do this.
I run a single-user instance.
