We really need more of this!

It's time for solutions that address the core problem of why most people choose the likes of GAFAM over secure, self-hostable options.

As he says here, don't expect someone to get a CS degree to simply be able to share photos and files with family and friends. I say, let's look to the pinnacle days of user interface design in the 60s and 70s or early like Braun.

Everything was knobs you turn, faders you slide or a button to push.

As with all the different federated platforms, each will require its own account, which IMHO is actually a good thing.

Yes, you can link videos within a Lemmy/Kbin thread that points to the video, just like you would with any other video link.

However, when it comes to interactivity/comments in order for this to happen a user needs to follow the channel, for example try following this @Blender

From the point you start following, it will pop up in your timeline like any other user and your comments to it will show up on their instance, just like a YouTube comment.

I have been able to post in a Lemmy community from an Mbin instance without having a Lemmy account, so the separate account limitation is not a universal limitation. Hence why I asked. In any case, I appreciate the answer.

I’ll also say that there is a privacy issue with this design. If I am in a video, my appearance, voice, & part of the world I am in are all revealed & subject to facial rec. I don’t generally want my biometrics to then be linked to my threadiverse accts.

So this limitation creates an burden of having to register and maintain more accounts. Registration is increasingly slow and tedious to fight bots, so we often have to write something about ourselves and possibly solve a captcha to create a new Lemmy account.

When it comes to the video, you could make it using your actual identity as you do on Youtube, no difference. Since it's only a peertube account there is no link to any of your other fediverse accounts ... which is why I prefer separate identities as well.

I would never touch Youtube. YT also blocks me anyway. Nor would I disclose my identity to peertube beyond what’s unavoidable as far as biometrics goes.

It would be useful if peertube would add the capability to post to Lemmy (as Kbin does). Until then, we have the burden of creating an extra kbin or lemmy acct just to add a link.

Ghost Keys and Cypherpunk Reputation Systems w⧸ Ian Clarke of Freenet

A discussion of how this system could help disincentivize spam and botnets on the internet by creating Webs of Trust and reputation systems using well established techniques, namely asymmetric cryptography, from as far back as the 80s and 90s. But making it easy to use.

I'm so happy to see #opensource #foss projects supporting non-corporate platforms like #peertube :) @Penpot :penpot:

Make sure to give them a follow using #activitypub to get alerted to all new videos that they post... and as an added bonus you can comment directly from the #fediverse client of your choice:)

Friendica is better than I remembered

I'd have to say the #Friendica experience is snappier and nicer than I remember.

The ability to interact with so many different networks and protocols is unmatched, you can even follow RSS feeds.

Add to that an amazing feature set, and its thread viewing is so superior to Mastodon.

Viewing video links from #peertube works great inline as well:)

in reply to LPS

Oops, following this account from my Mastodon account, and it doesn't actually show that whole post, but instead creates a link to the OP ... that's not ideal:(
in reply to LPS

I have a feeling that if I create a post with a Title it has this odd behaviour, but if I don't include one it won't do the "below the fold"?
in reply to LPS

This is how mastodon interprets the friendica posts with a title from what I know. If you do not put a title it will show the full post. Perhaps this is a Mastodon thing.

Thanks for confirming:) Yes, I would imagine you're right.

Sam Tripoli on Peertube

For any #tinfoilhat fans out there (Sam Tripoli) you'll be happy to know his episodes are mirrored on his very own #peertube instance tinfoilhat@vid.samtripoli.com and thanks to the magic that is #activitypub you can follow the latest releases directly from #mastodon :) The view counts on the videos are truly incredible since they're embedded on his main website. The part that I enjoy the most is the fact that most of his audience has no idea of technology being used
