After a conversation with @Bernard Marx it seems that he's experiencing the same, with the only difference being that he's running an arm server and mine is an old PC.
I’m not a tech person and never really thought about ANY of this prior to Elon musk buying twitter a year ago, but popping onto baby bluesky has highlighted for me just how dynamic and mature mastodon actually is. It gets a LOT of criticism and omission from mainstream journos, but the reality is that mastodon is a fascinating and very user friendly global group project, and deserves some credit for what it has, not just (appropriate and important) criticism of what it lacks

All that said, I’d love to see masto continue to evolve in ways that make joining (and starting instances) much easier for regular people, BIPOC and people who don’t enjoy thinking about tech features! Would also love to see quicker adoption of features people are calling for, like opt-in quote toots.
Also, more humility & dialogue pls on how to make the fedi mirror the demographics of our planet: more ownership and participation from the global south, more BIPOC leadership and participation

Dear @firefox, Please remove Google controlled browsing (pitched to us as Google "safe" browsing). I use Firefox because I *don't* want Google to control what I see, so letting them choose this, even in #Firefox, defeats the purpose of your mission.
I had a domain flagged because they considered the yunohost login page on the server to be a "social engineering" attempt. I found myself having to register at goog search console to try to explain why there's a yunohost login page on the site. Their example URLs for why the site was flagged also included random subdomains that would redirect to the yunohost panel login page because I had wildcard URLs enabled on the domain. The affected domain was unflagged, then eventually reflagged... luckily I was the only one really using the site.
"Google safe browsing" should really be renamed "Google controlled browsing". No matter which popular browser used, Google alone chooses what pages are blocked with frightening messages about malware/phishing.
Sure, you can switch it off on your own browser, but if you run a site, you have no control over the browser of all your visitors. So when Google decides that they don't like Yunohost (or any other webapp) you're basically screwed.
@Blort For what it's worth and as far as I understand, #Firefox actually uses the "Update API" of Google Safe Browsing, which means it periodically updates a local copy of the list, so Google doesn't see the URL that is checked.
Good to know. I've updated the original post to reflect this, although it's still far too much control by Google in even "non-Google" browsers as to what pages people see, vs what pages are replaced with alarming warning messages that have a demonstrated pattern of being false, but scaring people away from independently hosted #Yunohost sites. Having had a business page false flagged by Google before, the reputation damage was incalculable.
The infuriating is that it's not clear at all what is the issue, and from what I understand you need to register a google account to contest this thing
When you do report that a site is on the banlist, Google also does not respond at all, so there seems to be no official way of finding out what's wrong. And that while this list is supposed to contain only *known* malicious sites.
Yes, a while ago I ended up having to register for Google Search Console to contest their "deceptive site" flag.
They claim to have detected "harmful content." The issue was "deceptive pages." The sample URLs they provided were all /yunohost/admin or /yunohost/sso.
"These pages attempt to trick users into doing something dangerous, such as installing unwanted software or revealing personal information."
Other sample URLs they provided were random subdomains that I wasn't even using. But since wildcard URLs were enabled they were redirecting to /yunohost/admin.
It seems they think that all sites that running on Yunohost servers are trying to impersonate Yunohost. (?)
Thanks, but the point is not just to find a browser that doesn't use #GoogleControlledBrowsing. Heck, I can even turn this off in #Chrome if I want. What I *can't* do is switch it off for everyone else, visiting sites that Google has decided to block with "unsafe" malware / phishing warnings, even when they don't have anything like that. What I would like to have is a way to detect if a browser has this enabled, and if so gently redirect them to an exit page about #webneutrality or something.
I seem to be having the same issue with follow imports hosting on my pc as well:( It says this may take a while, but never actually seems to import them.
That's great, it's good they know, though I agree, it's likely the #Yunohost package:( After investigating the forums at forum.yunohost.org there don't seem to be any topics at all.
Just a quick update about the #yunohost #calckey issue of not being able to import followers ... turns out that this may be something inherited from #misskey .
I just recently uninstalled #calckey due to this issue (I'm waiting until this is resolved) and tried #misskey in its place ... sadly it is not able to do this either:(

To add to this, I was thinking of creating a personal #friendica instance, which is the service I'm using now, though not self-hosting. However, I think I am not convinced. I love the features, but it feels slow to me, which is a bit sad. I also learned that this may be due to the fact that it is built in PHP.

That’s why [ColdDayApril] set up a challenge to grow a plant hydroponically using no more than a single watt.
The system is set up to grow a single pepper plant in what is known as a deep-water culture, where the plant is suspended in a nutrient solution which has everything it needs to grow. The lightning system is based around the Samsung LM301B which comes close to the physical limits for converting electricity into white light and can manage around 220 lumens. A special power supply is needed for these low-power diodes, and the light is efficiently directed towards the plant using a purpose-built reflective housing. By placing this assembly very close to the plant and adjusting it as it grows, [ColdDayApril] was able to take the pepper plant from seed to flowering in 92 days.
It’s worth noting that the rest of the system uses a little bit of energy too. A two watt fan helps circulate some air in the hydroponic enclosure, and deep-water systems usually require an air pump to oxygenate the water which uses another two watts. This is still an impressive accomplishment as most hobbyist builds use lighting systems rated in the hundreds of watts and use orders of magnitude more energy. But, if you’re willing to add some fish into the system you can mitigate some of the energy requirements needed for managing the water system even further.
