Billionaires and trillion-dollar monopolies is not a failure of capitalism; it’s capitalism working exactly as designed. The biggest lie you’ve been told is that capitalism is essential to democracy. The truth is capitalism tolerates democracy when it’s weak and replaces it when it’s strong.

in reply to Aral Balkan

not sure the monopolies or billionaires are inherent to capitalism. The Chicago school of Economics is the reason we are where we are at now, along with Neoliberalism and the Citizens United Ruling. Capitalism would be different if those things don’t happen. Was this an inevitable end to capitalism? Don’t know. Would we better in a Social Democracy with Capitalism? Yes. It’s not like Socialism or Communism have been successful to the masses.
in reply to DaveKaz

Unfortunately, the "winners" of capitalism will always use their "capital" to steer how the system works.

How do we bake in fail safes, so the group with the largest war chest doesn't abuse it too? It certainly isn't any of those systems, though something socially democratic is a step in that direction. It's almost like we need an international recognition, and written into law, that society cannot survive with any individuals or corps that horde beyond a certain level of wealth.

in reply to Aral Balkan

- capitalism is the antithesis of democracy. What good does it do to have political democracy when you must kowtow to a completely authoritarian institution in order to have food, housing, etc.? A simple, trivial, example: You can vote to legalize marijuana (and win) but you can't enjoy it in the comfort and safety of your own home when you have to pass a piss test on Monday.

This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is a lot to read, and also we missed the toot about last week.

In short:
- F-Droid client 1.21 was released, but you should wait for 1.21.1 before you update
- there were some bugs in DAVx⁵, Nextcloud and Tailscale, so be careful in updating these too
- we're working together with @Codeberg to get our builds from apps hosted there working again
- any much more

@thopan Android 12 or later are required, yes, with the latest F-Droid Client. But keep in mind you need to either install the app or update it at least once manually, for the unattended updates to apply in the future.

Mastodon is financed by crowdfunding instead of venture capital not because we don't know that venture capital exists, not because we don't have bills to pay, and not because venture capital isn't willing to give money to new social media platforms. VCs don't want a sustainable business, they want a big exit. Every VC-backed business is on a timer to deliver or die.

Blackstone is now the largest corporate landlord on Earth with over 300,000 homes in the U.S.

Billionaires and corporations have bought millions of homes and either raised rents or left them as empty investments.

There are 16 million vacant houses—28 for every homeless person.

in reply to Chilly Branzino ☭

@Nimbius666
The mentality is simple. The profit margins of running a business fairly are small, but capitalism is supposed to be built on these slim margins. Its sustainable.

These guys think reality is chump change. Nepo babies. Complete idiots. I spoke WITH them for 10 years doing manager interviews, setting up their presentation for investors.

I figured the min. investment was too large for mainstream investors, and you needed 5 mill to even get into it. So only idiots would get hurt.

I was so wrong.

But I even reviewed Too Big To Fail, eventually, and did a New Yorker piece.

When they found out I wasn't in love with their bs. I got fired. Trapped in Iceland. Lol. With THEM.

Betsy DeVos parks her yacht down the street. I pray for XL orcas every day.

Yeah. We sold adresses in NY and West Palm Beach. Hedge Fund hotels. We built their websites in the naughties..

I did this. I destroyed the world.

Me and my brother. Sigh.

This is what you get when you don't offer assistance to children brought up in #cults. We overachieve in the wrong way.

Hey mastodon hive-mind,

What's your recommendation for a video doorbell, without a subscription, wired not battery, that can collect footage on your doorstep around the clock?

Not Amazon. Thanks!

As with all the different federated platforms, each will require its own account, which IMHO is actually a good thing.

Yes, you can link videos within a Lemmy/Kbin thread that points to the video, just like you would with any other video link.

However, when it comes to interactivity/comments in order for this to happen a user needs to follow the channel, for example try following this @Blender

From the point you start following, it will pop up in your timeline like any other user and your comments to it will show up on their instance, just like a YouTube comment.

in reply to LPS

I have been able to post in a Lemmy community from an Mbin instance without having a Lemmy account, so the separate account limitation is not a universal limitation. Hence why I asked. In any case, I appreciate the answer.

I’ll also say that there is a privacy issue with this design. If I am in a video, my appearance, voice, & part of the world I am in are all revealed & subject to facial rec. I don’t generally want my biometrics to then be linked to my threadiverse accts.

So this limitation creates an burden of having to register and maintain more accounts. Registration is increasingly slow and tedious to fight bots, so we often have to write something about ourselves and possibly solve a captcha to create a new Lemmy account.

When it comes to the video, you could make it using your actual identity as you do on Youtube, no difference. Since it's only a peertube account there is no link to any of your other fediverse accounts ... which is why I prefer separate identities as well.

askfedi group reshared this.

in reply to LPS

I would never touch Youtube. YT also blocks me anyway. Nor would I disclose my identity to peertube beyond what’s unavoidable as far as biometrics goes.

It would be useful if peertube would add the capability to post to Lemmy (as Kbin does). Until then, we have the burden of creating an extra kbin or lemmy acct just to add a link.

As a visual artist myself, I found this video to be so incredibly inspiring and at the same time it expresses something I've always felt but had difficulty expressing to non-artists.

Danny Gregory goes into how he uses his sketchbook as a visual journal of his life, it's impact on how he experiences the world around him, and how it also creates joy and connection in his life.

I don't believe this is limited to any specific creative pursuit, but rather all creative pursuits. In this day and age where society is obsessed with money and all things quantifiable, we often forget how essential Art is to the human experience.

Take a look, it will make your day:)

I always appreciate how your team treats F-Droid and Linux as first-class citizens. It's one of the reasons I prefer your service.

Keep it up please! 🥺

in reply to Professor Code

@ProfessorCode Agreed. If I hadn’t gotten myself into the Proton ecosystem when I did, I’d probably have chosen Tuta as my primary email provider. Although, I might switch my business over to them.
in reply to Keagan

@governorkeagan @ProfessorCode And we'd be happy to welcome you. 😍 Any questions, we're here to help - we use Linux and F-Droid ourselves so our approach in this regard will never change!

Is there any reason (besides available features) that I couldn’t use a free personal plan for my business until it starts bringing in money? Once I’ve got a more consistent income stream from the business I could then upgrade to a business plan.

I’m the sole employee in the business. I think the only major feature I’d be missing by taking this approach would be a custom domain — which I have setup already via my family plan on Proton.

@governorkeagan Hi there! Thanks for reaching out :) Please note that free plans are exclusively for personal use, not business. We would suggest choosing the Business Essential plan which is well suited to small businesses and freelancers.
