#Gaza #Palestine

In the fast-evolving world of activism, technology, and social justice, few individuals embody the spirit of both innovation and purpose quite like Adil Abbuthalha, the creator of "Boycat", an app designed to revolutionise ethical consumerism.

Before October 2023, he was working in data science. But as Israeli attacks on Gaza escalated, his focus shifted dramatically.

Belgian Workers Party Belgian MP Nabil Boukili confronted the Israeli ambassador to Belgium, Idit Rosenzweig Abu, in a heated exchange in the Belgian parliament on 22 October.

Boukili demanded accountability for Israel’s actions before stating that Israel is “a terrorist state” and called it a “disgrace” that there are no sanctions against Israel.

After destroying Ottoman era mosques and buildings, after destroying one of the oldest churches in #Gaza, Saint Porphyrios, now #Israel is destroying Tyre, one of the oldest cities in the world.

This attacks are not by accident. Israel has a long standing practice of destroying (or remodeling or appropriating) historical buildings as a way of erasing the Muslim presence and history. This much is denounced in Illan Pappé's book The Ethnic Cleansing of #Palestine.

basic #privacy tip ... If you are interested in, or relying on, end-to-end encryption then do yourself a favor and ensure your keyboard app (Gboard anyone?) does not have network access.

You can sleep better knowing your Keyboard app does not transfer stuff somewhere, let alone feed some AI machinery, right?

Keyboard apps also often have access to clipboard buffers, so copy+paste is also leaking if your keyboard app happily talks with servers.

Edit: feel free to provide your recommendation

Sam Altman side by side with Aaron Swartz.

I can't stop thinking about it. One was prosecuted by the US for downloading copyrighted data from 1 source for noble purposes, and committed suicide to avoid prison. The other is widely celebrated for doing this on a much larger scale*.

CNN's Sympathy Piece on Israeli Soldier Backfires After War Crime Allegations Surface

Despite the reality carefully researched and documented by not only Amnesty International but by a preponderance of the world's human rights organizations, CNN employed language that carefully constructed a sympathetic narrative around the mental health of a soldier engaged in actions that the World Court has acknowledged as a plausible case of genocide.

Critics argue that CNN's story is emblematic of a broader trend of double standards within corporate media. For instance, the New York Times has reported on Israeli soldiers' "panic attacks" as newsworthy yet has not offered similar mental health coverage for Lebanese or Palestinian civilians who are being killed and injured in large numbers.

It's time for solutions that address the core problem of why most people choose the likes of GAFAM over secure, self-hostable options.

As he says here, don't expect someone to get a CS degree to simply be able to share photos and files with family and friends. I say, let's look to the pinnacle days of user interface design in the 60s and 70s or early like Braun.

Everything was knobs you turn, faders you slide or a button to push.

Billionaires and trillion-dollar monopolies is not a failure of capitalism; it’s capitalism working exactly as designed. The biggest lie you’ve been told is that capitalism is essential to democracy. The truth is capitalism tolerates democracy when it’s weak and replaces it when it’s strong.

Unfortunately, the "winners" of capitalism will always use their "capital" to steer how the system works.

How do we bake in fail safes, so the group with the largest war chest doesn't abuse it too? It certainly isn't any of those systems, though something socially democratic is a step in that direction. It's almost like we need an international recognition, and written into law, that society cannot survive with any individuals or corps that horde beyond a certain level of wealth.

- capitalism is the antithesis of democracy. What good does it do to have political democracy when you must kowtow to a completely authoritarian institution in order to have food, housing, etc.? A simple, trivial, example: You can vote to legalize marijuana (and win) but you can't enjoy it in the comfort and safety of your own home when you have to pass a piss test on Monday.

This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is a lot to read, and also we missed the toot about last week.

In short:
- F-Droid client 1.21 was released, but you should wait for 1.21.1 before you update
- there were some bugs in DAVx⁵, Nextcloud and Tailscale, so be careful in updating these too
- we're working together with @Codeberg to get our builds from apps hosted there working again
- any much more

Mastodon is financed by crowdfunding instead of venture capital not because we don't know that venture capital exists, not because we don't have bills to pay, and not because venture capital isn't willing to give money to new social media platforms. VCs don't want a sustainable business, they want a big exit. Every VC-backed business is on a timer to deliver or die.

Blackstone is now the largest corporate landlord on Earth with over 300,000 homes in the U.S.

Billionaires and corporations have bought millions of homes and either raised rents or left them as empty investments.

There are 16 million vacant houses—28 for every homeless person.
