Haven't seen this documentary, but this is something I'm interested in.

Do you know any trustable sources for finding good analysis of scientific data ?

I know a podcast called "Science vs" that does this pretty well. I find their explanations very convincing, but also want to find other sources like them. The more diverse sources I learn from, the less biased the info will be.

Its better if the force of trade is lower, like in a nonprofit organization.

Yup, we had Science vs podcast on our curated podcasts that we want to bring back soon. We have this curated news website tromnews.com/ so these are the sources that I find trustful. Plus on the videos section. We keep them updated. Mind you, the website is not yet optimized for mobile phones...

Yeah I know about tromnews.com, that's where usually go to find interesting stuff, (also videoneat.com). But Science vs is a little different, in that their entire goal is myth busting and finding truth. Other sources found in tromnews is mostly educational material and news, which is good but is not the same thing.

Yes but there are sources like snopes, healthnewsreview, respectfulinsolance, science based medicine, DW, UN, or on the video section there are people like thunderf00t, healtcaretriage, Last Week Tonight, VOX, Veritasium and more who are myth busting a lot. :) - Also, depends myth busting what? Health news, we have a few great sources. Science in general!? Snopes is what I am aware that does this all the time.

What do you think is the best decentralized messengers that also supports video/audio calls, groups, sync between devices? Like, p2p decentralized. Not Signal and the like. We are currently testing qTox and Jami.

I'm also doing the same thing here, but on android. From my testing, the jami android app had some stability issues, so I uninstalled it. Briar and atox were more stable in my experience, but these apps lack certain features. As of now, briar can't send photos or videos. So I uninstalled that too, and sticked with atox. Atox is still in beta I think, and it don't support calls, groups, etc yet. But these features are supported by the tox protocol, so it will probably come soon on atox too.

But after some long term usage, I noticed that android was killing my background connection on atox. I tried disabling battery optimization and all that, but it didn't work. I'm using an MIUI device, which is known for this problem so it could just be my phone. Anyway, now I'm feeling like I should give briar another try, this time testing for long term usage. I was also attracted by other features on it, like Tor, blog & forum support, wifi & Bluetooth connections etc.

Looking at their github repo, they're also trying to add image and video support to briar, this would make the experience similar to atox.

On the UI, jami was the best, followed by atox and briar. But briar really nails it on security, privacy, anonymity and free speech. I hope these technologies improve in the future.

Not p2p but I heard that session messenger will soon be adding voice and video calls over Tor. I Haven't tested it, but its pretty user friendly from what I hear.

I agree. Jami seems the most modern looking and can almost sync between multiple instances - like say you have it on your desktop and also on your phone - you expect for everything to sync (messages, files sent, conversations, contacts, etc.). And Jami is a hit or miss but they are trying to finally solve this issue. If they fix it then Jami is a great one. Tox with qTox for desktop works like a charm, but cannot sync with any mobile Tox client from what I can tell... Briar seems too new for now so I will wait and see. Session looks great and if they add video/audio then that's gonna change it into a proper messenger.

XMPP is also a good choice if you're going with the federation approach. XMPP is actually a lot lighter on server resources compared to matrix, this could be important for a healthy federation.

nothing against XMPP, but it is just not used much in my bubble. You can run a modern Matrix server on RPi4 or cheap VPS if needed, I don't consider it being much of an issue. Majority of users just use existing servers.

But Matrix is server dependent. You need to make an account with one of the Matrix providers...XMPP is the same. These are not really decentralized.

If you mean they are not P2P, that is true. P2P Matrix is planned and demoed but not usable for long time. P2P has some benefits but I don't consider it important yet for the big picture. What we need is FOSS decentralized messaging to replace the centralized silos.

But is so useful to have direct p2p without a middle party that can always temper with the connection or messages. Retroshare is another one that seems great yet quite oldish and it never really worked well from our tests. Also probably no mobile app for it....

Well, there is E2EE which prevents servers from tampering or even seeing messages. Of course server admins have power to disable your account, that is something P2P would prevent as it's practically a server in your device.

It is true, but the vast majority of people are unable to do this. But if you have a true p2p app like say Jami or qTox, then users only have to install the app (like they normally do) and that's it. No friction ;). I think that's very important if you want such tools to spread.

Absolutely. But at the current state one could argue that setting up a server and using somewhat polished clients may actually be less friction than struggling with the current incarnations of p2p messengers.

To be clear: I'm excited about the p2p solutions mentioned and can't really say anything about how "easy" they are as I didn't test them in ages. But if you ask for the "best" currently available tool, self hosting may be an option to consider.

Yes p2p msg apps right now are not super reliable, but if I think about my parents, friends, and people I know, I don't think anyone could setup their own server for Matrix or XMPP, but pretty much all of them can install one of those p2p apps. Several of which work quite great. I tested qTox for a while and it really is reliable between computers. Jami looks great and works great, but cannot sync properly with the mobile app. The rest lack features like video/audio calls or group chats, but for simple messages they seem to work great.

I mean I could setup a Matrix or XMPP server, we already provide a plethora of services at trom.tf/ - so I could help all of those people I know in that regards, but I'd prefer to not be responsible for such things if possible. ;) - I'd like for people to use p2p apps rather the services we provide.

Another strategy is making selfhosting easier. FreedomBox, YUNOhost and Freedombone all come with XMPP and Matrix servers included I think.

True! We use YNH and simply because of them we were able to provide many services. However I think is a lot better to have p2p apps that any user can use and become a node by using them. So no servers needed, no setup and stuff like that. I think that's the future. ;)

This entire month we will be busy moving out of this apartment. We are broke so we can't stay here anymore...I will be busy with that so not many, if any, updates for the next 10 or so days. I am trying to maintain the "trains" working and updated. I will probably make a blog post about the move since I may want to touch upon some general and relevant topics. But yah, that's what it is. Finally, the financial support got so low I can't even ask for support anymore since it will make no difference for our current situation :D. #tromlive

Really great documentary! Super positive and relevant. Imagine if human beings didn't have to trade all of their lives for nothingness (stuff and stuff), but have the time to get involved with relevant projects to help solve diseases, poverty, mysteries...to learn about the world and explore. 20+ more documentaries to add to VN are on the pipeline ;) - several that are very interesting. Will do my best to add them but this month I will be busy with moving to my parents' house (cause I'm broke :D ) - and all that...I am trying to have some more fun with @Aaron these days before he leaves. Tomorrow we plan to go here close where we live, spend a night in nature in the hammocks. See the stars, the water (hopefully we can see some bio-luminescence), make a bbq, talk, and enjoy. The following months will be very challenging for me working on TROM II and changing my working space. So yah, am thinking to simply enjoy this month, whatever is left from it. All trains are working so far, and I am supper happy about that. #tromlive

Guess what? We finished the recordings for TROM II. Finally! Wow. We stay up until 4am to do them. Sasha was amazing and we got some really great footage from her interview. We may have some 20h of recordings so this these next months we will work on making sense of these all, and create the sequel to TROM documentary. It will be tough - very much so. We recorded Sasha today. Really great recording. Everything went so great, so smooth. This first part was all about her life story. Tomorrow we will record about the state of our society. Sasha prepared a lot. She read through a lot of UN reports and such, so that what she will present will be as factual as possible. All of the facts we will present in TROM II will be sourced, of course. Directly on the video and in the description. #tromimg

I am a bit stuck with the new tromjaro ISO because of a small bug with the kvantum theme that we are using it seems. Or am not sure. The text is blackish on a blackish background for QT apps. So....the installer is not very useful in such a state. I will try again tomorrow to find a fix. The rest of the "trains" are working well. Updated YNH to the latest and all looks good. Tomorrow night I'll update some key trom.tf apps as I mentioned these days. #tromlive

I found out what made our Peertube live stream suddenly stop for the past 2 streams. I set it up to also convert in 3 formats during the live stream. And apparently this kills the server - you need a very powerful server for the job - however if I looked at the server itself it was never close to being "killed". So am not sure if this was truly the case, but that's what the dev of Peertube are saying (and I am questioning it). In any regards, it should work from now on without the conversion. And the conversion happens afterwards. I had to do hours of test live streamings today to figure this out. Anyways... I will also update Peertube and Cryptpad on 11th so you all know. I am yet to fix some Calamares stuff for tromjaro in order to release a new ISO. Maybe I'll realease without that. I'll try to focus more on tromjaro the next days. And the next week we plan to finish the recordings for TROM II. #tromlive

Super cool that Cryptpad (office.trom.tf) allows for notifications now. I just sent one to all users that we will do some maintenance in a week. Basically I plan to push the Cryptpad update in a week. I am doing this with all major trom.tf apps. Wait for a week and let everyone know in advance. I wand to do this trom.tf thingy properly ;). #tromlive

I worked on a new TROMjaro ISO these days to get ready for when manjaro pushes the gnome-shell 40. So far so good, except Calamares (the installer) has some minor text issues - I reported them. I won't work much this month on anything....except TROM II recordings. I am enjoying the time with Aaron and some nice sunny days. Then in the middle of the month I have to start moving my stuff to my parents' house since I cannot afford to live on my own anymore. What can I do!? So yah, I will try to be lazy this month and move my life to another location. All of our tools should be up and running. #tromlive
