As Israel insists on using starvation as weapon, famine in northern Gaza must be officially declared
Since Israel has been committing the crime of starvation and using it as a means to carry out its genocide against the Palestinian people with the goal of eradicating them, the world is accountable for the famine crisis that Israel has caused in the Gaza Strip. Given the likelihood of dozens of deaths among the hungry every day, the international community is cautioned that this crisis is nearing its peak.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification System’s Famine Review Committee, a specialised body that evaluates and authorises famine classifications in nations experiencing severe food crises, issued an alert on Friday that warned of the gravity of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and its rapid deterioration. It also raised concerns about the imminent and high risk of famine in the northern part of the Strip specifically and the urgent need for the international community to act within days—not weeks—to lessen the severity of this humanitarian disaster in the northern Gaza Strip.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor counters that it is time to formally declare famine in the Gaza Strip, particularly in the north, which is experiencing an unprecedented siege, bombardment, and deprivation of all basic necessities for survival. This declaration would require the international community to fulfill its moral obligations and take all of the necessary legal actions against Israel, such as punishing it with sanctions, preventing it from receiving weapons, and acting quickly to establish a humanitarian corridor and bring in aid and supplies to prevent thousands of Palestinians from starving to death.
As Israel insists on using starvation as weapon, famine in northern Gaza must be officially declared
Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon is one component of its ongoing genocide in the StripEuro-Med Human Rights Monitor

This is the part that is difficult to point out to those currently enamoured by the rise of AI, and it's widespread use.
The straw man argument is always "you're a Luddite, you're simply afraid of technology" ... no one hates technology, it's simply extremely clear that it's being used to displace workers.
A first-hand account from the citizen journalist regarding the footage she shot of the Israeli Hooligan attacks that were falsely claimed as #antisemetism by main stream outlets around the world. Funny how the people that claim that dis and misinformation is the problem, all the while the "ministry of truth" is the one actually doing it.
Prove me wrong.
One thing that anybody with brains and their eyes open has learned this year is how much of the media is controlled by the Zionists. Luckily we have a few good Jews reporting the truth such as Unz.com, Mondoweiss, and The Grayzone. thegrayzone.com/2024/11/10/vid…

‘It’s not close’ - Wikipedia concludes Israel is committing genocide, ending editorial debate
Wikipedia has officially added “Gaza genocide” to its “List of Genocides” page, marking a major shift in how Israel’s aggression on the besieged enclave is being documented on the world’s largest online encyclopaedia. The addition, which now appears as the first entry due to the list’s reverse chronological order, comes after months of extensive debate among the platform’s editors. On its “Gaza genocide” page, it states that “Experts, governments, United Nations agencies, and non-governmental organisations have accused Israel of carrying out a genocide against the Palestinian people during its invasion and bombing of the Gaza Strip in the ongoing Israel–Hamas war.”
The entry for “List of genocides,” Wikipedia states that “Israel has been accused by experts, governments, UN agencies and non-governmental organisations of carrying out a genocide against the Palestinian population during its invasion and bombing of Gaza during the ongoing Israel–Hamas war.” The page goes on to list the death toll in Gaza while mentioning that the overwhelming majority of Palestinians killed are civilians.

It would only take a handful of dedicated zionists to kick up a fuss to create the debate.
I think there's an important caveat here. Yes, it's not a democracy, but I don't think stirring up a fuss is as easy as citing various wiki editing policies and starting arguments. If you invoke them frivolously you aren't going to succeed at making edits.
I think what's incredibility obvious to you and I is an area of willful and encouraged ignorance for some who benefit from the results of their ignorance. I think that the media is largely complicit is beyond distasteful, but it's also the reality we live in.
I also think it's important for wikipedia to work through their own NPOV policies. It should be applauded that they eventually arrived at the correct conclusion, AND moreso that they spent time considering and discarding contrary positions.
Accepting one particular viewpoint with no consideration is dogmatism, and is not helpful to progressive causes.

The definition of genocide according to the UN genocide convention consists of two parts. The first part is action which is subdivided into five subcategories:
- Killing members of the group;
- Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
- Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
- Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
- Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
Ticking one of these boxes is enough to qualify for the action part. Certainly, Israel ticks the first box, probably the second, and if Yoav Gallant's words are anything to go by, also the third:
“I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed, we are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly"
This quote is actually a nice segue into the second part of the definition of genocide, which is intent. Performing the actions outlined above only counts as genocide if it is done with the intention of destroying (in whole or in part) an ethnic, a religious, or national group. This is usually a bit harder to show. Not in this case though!
"“It’s an entire nation out there that is responsible. It’s not true this rhetoric about civilians not aware not involved. It’s absolutely not true. … and we will fight until we break their backbone.”
"“there is no such thing as uninvolved civilians in Gaza"
"The people should be told that they have two choices; to stay and to starve, or to leave"
These are all quotes from high placed Israeli officials (one of them is even president), all said in the context of justifying and directing the current attacks on Gaza. There's many, many more, each more overt and disgusting than the last, outlined in South Africa's 80 page document accusing Israel of genocide.
Back in december 2023 it was already indisputable that Israel is committing genocide. Even more so now. One more for good measure:
"Erase the memory of them. Erase them, their families, mothers and children."

I'd like to add to your brilliant run-down of reasons why Israel's actions are provably genocidal, that they have also committed the fifth.

No, it's not true to say that an event is not Genocide just because the party (rightly IMV) accused of Genocide hasn't blocked 100% of humanitarian aid. Blocking humanitarian aid is illegal under international law.[1][2]
In deciding whether or not the event constitutes Genocide, It matters whether the killings and conditions imposed on the population of the Gaza Strip can be proven to be carried out with genocidal intent. South Africa has already presented ample evidence of statements from Israeli leaders which are/seem tantamount to statements of genocidal intent, and the ICJ has already ruled that there is a plausible risk of genocide being committed. We are just waiting for the ICJ to make their ruling.

What else could this mean? Someone from a specific country doesn't mean they have a specific skin color. Aren't there other marginalized groups to consider? for instance, the LGBT groups that far-right wingers have been antagonizing here in the US? Maybe its just me, but LGBT groups aren't defined by their skin color or race.

For my part, I'm not sure it is, though lack of votes didn't help. The meme is perhaps meanspirited so soon after the painful news, but here's my question, and this is genuine: now what?
Trump will get to pick a bunch of lower federal judges and probably two more SCOTUS judges. What's the way out when it seems to me that he and his jackals control the military, the police, and the judiciary? Seems like a hopeless setup to me.

anyone that did not vote kamala is now in part responsible for the inevitable increased suffering that will occur in palestine, lebanon, iran, and ukraine
it really is that simple
Not a USAmerican, but by that logic:
Are Kamala, her party and her supporters who couldn't get those people to vote for Kamala also responsible for the increased suffering?
Are they responsible for the people not being convinced that the suffering would be lesser under Kamala?
Did Kamala and party show significant effort and good faith to woo those people?
Or was it the 99% Hitler vs 100% Hitler thing? Asking since most online discourse I saw on it here in lemmy was like that, where they're saying Trump would be worse, instead of saying that Kamala would be better, de-escalate stuff etc.
Yes, they are morally culpable too. Even more so than the people who refused to vote for them.
That's the thing about ethics when you actually apply it in reality; someone else being wrong doesn't mean you're right.
If that's how they place the blame, then that'd be cool.
But other than that, in reality, it likely seems to become a blame game, where they don't want to look at why they lost the trust of the folk who they are blaming.
Though, I'm just seeing online interactions. Maybe offline interactions are much more decent and useful.
The Dem establishment will obviously blame anyone but themselves. That's what establishments do. That's why, assuming there are still free and fair elections in America in two years time, left wing voters in the US need to start planning now how they're going to primary out every last establishment Dem who thought that leaning right was the answer, and replace them with people who do believe in real progressive politics.
It won't work everywhere. It can't. And some of those people will inevitably get caught up in the machine, or turn out not to be what they claimed. Reality is messy. But get enough of them in and you can make a real difference. The mid-terms are the American left's opportunity to do what the right did in 2010.
But at the end of the day none of this matters, because we're just two outsiders pontificating over another country's politics. Despite how deeply those politics affect the whole world, there's nothing we can actually do about it, other than focusing on what we can do in our own back yards.
there’s plenty of blame to go around; no 1, 2, or 3 people or groups are to blame
best we can hope for now is for netanyahu to bruise the orange ego somehow and find out what petty retaliation looks like
Increased suffering? \
How can their suffering be increased more than it is now?
Israel is already getting everything could have ever wished for. There is nothing trump could do to make that worse.
There were other reasons to vote for Harris, but this wasn't one.
Oopsie, when writing my comment I deleted my first attempt as I was going on and on forever and decided I was just gonna copy paste what I found previously.
It looks like after deleting the draft I clicked reply on your comment by accident instead of whathever I wanted to reply to.

What will trump do to cause more Palestinian deaths? \
What COULD he do?
Israel is already getting everything they wanted, and facing zero consequences or obstacles.
I don't disagree with you wrt American deaths, but that's not what this post is about

Granted, Biden did almost nothing to slow it down, and kept Israel well supplied with the weapons of genocide. Do you really think it's a coincidence that Netanyahu waited until the day after the election to announce that Palestinians won't be allowed to return to northern Gaza though?
Granted, that was almost certainly the plan all along, but now even the fig leaf is gone. Without the need to devote any thought at all to political cover, Israel will stop even pretending to internal investigations of accusations against their own soldiers and redeploy those resources to the battlefield.
The number of Palestinian deaths may not be different, but they'll die even sooner.

There was never a fig leaf. They already didn't need to devote any attention to political cover, the USA already made it clear that it wouldn't tolerate holding Israel or any of the Israeli politicians accountable in international courts.
The difference between the two is purely in wording and absolutely immaterial. If anything, trump is being more honest about it.
Trump is terrible for other reasons, but they're both equal in this matter

It's almost like the tankies just want what's bad for America and don't actually care about palestine or human rights.
Am I happy I was right when I told Blue MAGA they should stop running a campaign on Genocide and was banned from LemmyWorld?
No.
Was I right?
Yes.
Your takeaway should be to start ignoring the Blue MAGA cult who tell you to stick your head in the sand while Holocaust Harris is speaking. Criticize them and make them so unpopular that they run another candidate who is not Bidolf.

Alright. Well, gotta deal with the pain of having a criminal conman for a president on our individual ways, I suppose.
I'm not really interested in criticizing people, myself. You can do what you like and convince people to join you in whatever way you deem fit, but in my experience, they tend to shut down and stop listening (maybe it's my delivery). I'd much rather show them there's hope elsewhere, especially because right now, that's what a lot of people want. Honey vs. vinegar, and all that.

By applying enough pressure that they run a decent candidate. Like how they replaced Biden because he would 100% not win after the CNN debate.
By allowing Democrats to run on a Nazi agenda and censoring dissent, the Blue MAGA crowd effectively doomed themselves.
Everyone fell in line behind an emperor without clothes. Are you really surprised the emperor has no clothes now?

It's been so frustrating to have to put up with Democrats that try to enforce a Republican-style party line instead of building the coalition they need to win.
It's even more frustrating when they put a hundred times more effort into trying to build a coalition with members of the party they claim to be a threat to Democracy instead of their own left wing.

just an idea, it could be based on #NixOS , if I remember well the project was partially funded by European Research or Opensource funds.
Please correct me if I am wrong on the fundings, I say this from distant memory.
EDIT: it was just an idea, as it is not the most user-friendly distro out there...

Honestly, in a managed environment, there's not really much learning to do. All the hard part of learning Linux is dealing with system issues, or when shit breaks. In corporate land, you've got IT staff for that.
The biggest hurdle would be learning libre office, but considering the average white collar level of mastery of MS office is pretty poor, the basics really aren't that different in LO.

Exactly, for the pencil pushers it's going to be a transition from one desktop and office suite to another. Hardly "learning Linux".
I see more of a challenge on sys admins and department IT support who may have gotten comfy giving mostly Microsoft product support.
I see it generating less work for the helpdesk than Windows currently does. Linux can hardly brick itself without root while Windows can and has a lot of bloat and problems occuring on random on identical PCs. It also works fine on HDD and with less than 8GB of DDR3 RAM, so older hardware won't become garbage that quick. And since users aren't yet familiar with any Linux, there is a 5 year lag between deployment and when average users would start to dig in settings and customization parameters fixing\breaking things themselves like they do on their home machines.
It's investing in your own working future.
They're already putting out a petition so they're not wholly against the idea of an EU-Linux.
Also, this has been done before by other governments, like parts of the UK's and many Indian governments.
I think it'd be a big step, but a doable one and for the better.
Why do you compare it to destroying and rebuilding one of the EU countries, if I may ask?

It would make so much more sense to fund existing Linux development than making a new distro, tbh.
If the EU changed to Linux systems and donated the same amount back to open source development as they currently pay for Microsoft licenses, that would make a hell of a difference.

I don't know how it works with a frequently updating OS. In my mind beaurocrats can become asses about certifying one exact version they inspected and then making users afraid that open source community can inject the next version with viruses and they can't be sure it's okay too. Ah, and making each certification a paid service and somehow fucking it up.
In Russia there are like two projects of local Linux with custom wine that you can buy just like other software, certified by FSB for sensitive business (I believe them being the first pieces of software to get it except specific cryptographic stuff), but I feel the reason it's getting adopted and certified is because there are some nepotism and illegal connections with money not really changing pockets.
Focus instead on enforcing standards' compliance so i can open a .docx
with any program and be usable anywhere.
Then focus on enforcing FOSS software in public services but don't bother with a "european linux distro", that's just a waste of resources. There are already a great deal of distros around. Considering geopolitics i'd go with SuSe or some other EU-based distro.
Focus instead on enforcing standards’ compliance
For sure, but ¿por qué no los dos?
Completely agree with your other prioritisations.

That's an impossible task. Not even Microsoft manages that. Do not want to count how often i used libreOffice to repair or convert an older MSOffice file so it can be opend with modern Versions of MSOffice.
Once there was a 500MB Excel Sheet with lime 500-1000 used Cells, opened and saved it to.a xlsx file using libreOffice and reduced it to a few MB while still being fully functional.

Either you meant OpenDocument or you meant that you want a magic wand.
Just use Debian, it has old root, stable, still being developed, it's the base of various others distro that "enhance" it (sometimes badly).

Someone mentioned that M365 is properly not legal. Guess what, it isn't.
The EDPS (European Data Protection Supervisor) investgated the EU-Commissions' use of M365 and found it to be illegal in march 2024. EPDS gave the Commission until December 2024 to, among other things, stop transfers of Personal Information to third countries in M365 outside the EU. Which of course made the Commission sue the EDPS. And MS to do the same..
So M365 is NOT legal to use for any Public Institution in the EU. Unless the Controller make Microsoft change their DPA, contract etc. Kinda like MS did for the Dutch government after the dutch firm Privacy Company made an in depth analysis of M365 and found numerous illegal processing etc.
Fun how Microsoft was made aware of how they acted illegal, and changed it - only for the Dutch Government...!! The rest of their Customers still have the illegal DPA, terms etc... Also fun how it is Common knowledge and IT-departments still choose to use M365, and move as much as possible there from more privacy and security oriented services.

My point? EU-Linux is a fantastic idea! 🙂
Well, what better way to embrace FOSS than dismissing the efforts of all the existing distro maintainers? Welcome to the community, guys. Good luck building your cathedral next to the bazaar!
How about they instead work together with the distros and create a way of certifying a distro as gov-ready?
like this

They say nothing about their distro having no upstream. If they make a distro based of Debian/Arch/Fedora I don't see that as dismissing their efforts anymore than Nobara/SteamOS/Ubuntu/Mint does.
I rather they enforce their requirements on their own spin then try to force existing distros to implement said reqs. They should obviously donate to the foss community when using the technology the community maintain though!
Does Ubuntu "dismiss" Debian? Or Manjaro "disregard" Arch?
An EU-backed and funded distro released under the GNU license would mean that the government can now fund developers and maintainers to have a distribution that will comply with privacy and security requirements.
How much of Ubuntu's funding goes to supporting debian? I actually don't know.
I don't, for example, see Ubuntu listed here: debian.org/partners/

This is also a great way to follow newsletters without your email inbox getting jammed up. I mostly subscribe to newsletters, turn the emails off, and then read them in my feed reader.
Most newsletters provide an RSS feed, or there are some RSS readers that will let you send emails to a special email address so they show up in your feed.
Thanks for the guide. Very useful. I was looking for a friendly way to understand RSS
I only wish discovering plain, non-propeietary RSS feed URLs wasn't so painful for most podcasts and sites...
Vivaldi fortunately shows an RSS feed icon on pages with discoverable feeds! Firefox removed that feature long ago
Yes! I use Inoreader, as well, and for the same reasons. I especially prefer RSS to email newsletters as I am more likely to read what in my feed as opposed to what’s in my Inbox.
Let’s also not forget that podcasts are also delivered via RSS reader, so you’re not restricted to just print sources when you subscribe to RSS feeds.

Thank you for this excellent list. When I followed the "Erin Kissane’s internet website lol" link, I saw a big notice: "My new microstudio is over at wreckage/salvage. This site collects my work spring 2022–fall 2024."
wrecka.ge/ exists and has a feed, yay.
Oh yes! I'm using minflux so far for it. I'll look at inoreader ^^
So good to see this notion of blogroll, which puts back the notion of curation of sites
: As you seem to follow everything through RSS (like I do), I wonder how you draw the line between a "blog" and a "newsletter"?
Also, as the medium always impacts the message, I’m curious to know if you see any difference in terms of content/tone between blogs and newsletters.
Signed: A 20 years of blogging veteran
: thanks for the clarification. I will continue to talk about "blogs" and try to not bother too much then
(some are calling my own blogs a "newsletter" and it disturbs me more than it should)
I love that you still have a blogroll! I had one back in the RSS heyday and appreciated others to discover other great content. I'll be reviving a blogroll on my blog!
Do you use any automation to generate the blogroll list from feed subscriptions?
@chriswei i imagine it varies depending on the app. any reader that tries to recommend feeds to you is collecting *some* data, but you’d have to check the privacy policy to see what they do with it.
mine does try to recommend feeds, but doesn’t sell the data.
Sensitive content
This lacks the most important: unlimited sources and content filtering. The ultimate solution is to subscribe to your own interest (e.g. using keywords) and get the matching content from everywhere in real time. This is how #Awakari works. Dozens of thousands of public sources, #Fediverse, #RSS, #Telegram, #SSE, #Websocket, etc. You can always share your own source to the common collection.
#free #notracking #noai #nomorespam
2013, with Snowden was take for everyone to at least notice what defcon folks have been saying for 10-15 year.
Similarly, this year feels that more people will finally hear that your device, can check all your RSS feeds, get something from friends, ... , -- under your control, not someone else's.
Molly, I subscribed to your OPML list at feedland.org. This means it reads all the feeds in your list, and it's dynamic, so if you add or remove a feed from the list, it will subscribe or unsubscribe.
Here's the page where all the fees are listed.
feedland.org/?subscriptionlist…
And a timeline of new posts to all the feeds in your OPML list.
@berniethewordsmith
not sure what you mean by interact.
also it's best to use the support threads on GitHub, they're linked to from the Docs menu in FeedLand.
I think Vivaldi also has native rss client support
LOL, I agree. I found my copy at Powell's, but didn't realize they had put the entire book online until today when your post reminded me of it.
The art and writing are so great, and I love the new stuff I didn't even know about!
I'm really happy with my setup, which is selfhosting FreshRSS on my home machine, which is on the same Tailscale private VPN network as my laptop and my phone. Then my machines subscribe to this feed using the Fever API, on my computers I use Newsflash as client, and on my phone I use Feedme.
Or people can just use Inoreader, I just like setting everything up myself :)
I added The Wikipedian to my RSS feed after you shared this and apparently just in time to follow a major story. I really wish there was less going on these days 😓
