Sending love today to all the moms, and to all who could really use a mom hug today but can’t have one for whatever reason.

It’s my first without my mom ❤️‍🩹 but my 16th with my amazing daughter and have much to be grateful for. I have lots of extra mom love to spare if you need some today. ✨

Here Justine Bateman’s thread lays out a case for why AI in entertainment must be addressed now, protections created or writers, actors and directors may not have a profession or career at all very soon. Writers Guild (WGA), SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) are fighting for our professions to exist at all.

Being a mom in the US is dangerous—and wildly expensive:

More new mothers die in the US than in any other rich country. Several times over. The US has a maternal mortality crisis. ...

Giving birth in the US is insanely expensive ...

America remains one of exactly two countries that don’t mandate maternity leave ...

Lack of accessible healthcare

The cost of childcare in America is astounding. ...

I have been struggling with the world of podcast apps for 20 years and am absolutely blown away by how good #Antennapod is. Every feature I always wanted captured in one app. #podcasts have become the curated radio stream and thanks to private RSS and Patreon you can support the ones you want.

Great work 👏👏🎉 Antennapod community!

close to perfect podcast player. May the development never stop!

I’m hearing murmurs of YouTube blocking browsers that support ad blockers.

You know where you don’t have to worry about such things? Host your videos on a #PeerTube instance and use #Owncast for your live video streaming needs.

But of course you already knew that.

I was just let go from my job and I’m looking for a new place to land.
If anyone knows of an open role for a Senior QA with 10 years of experience, please let me know.

I have extensive skills in Agile, SDLC, Jira, Confluence, Smoke and regression testing, Postman, documentation and more. I’m in the US (NY) and am looking for something remote / WFH.

Even if you don’t have a role but see this post, PLEASE BOOST IT so someone else may see it. Thank you.

Got fired from working maintenance at Disney World because every time I found something that needed to be fixed I would yell out “What kind of a Mickey Mouse operation are they running around here?!?”

Alright #CalcKey junkies, I'm a Mastodon instance admin and I'm an engineering group lead at Automattic (think the company of WordPress' founder) who is leading the work to add Mastodon as a supported service for our Jetpack Social product.

That said, what's the sell to get me to spend more time here?

in reply to

@kainoa@kraft@dansup@mastodon.social So, already a significant part of the fediverse (outside mastodon) supports this! On second thought, I'm not sure if a Share button for articles applies to Pixelfed, since it's a photo sharing platform. But if this is supported by a few more other major platforms, like Lemmy and Akkoma, then this would mean any "Mastodon share" button would practically work as a "Fediverse share" button! This is something we need to standardize. I wonder if @evan@cosocial.ca has any thoughts on this, if there is a way to achieve a standard on that front.
I found this project github.com/Uden-AI/fediverse-s… but I think that it would be better if we could somehow have an official (or unofficial, but widely used) universal way of doing it, so that other sites could add Fedi share buttons easily.
in reply to Panos Damelos

@kainoa
My thought is that this is a great case for #WebIntents . /cc @paul

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Inte…

That said, I think the most practical option for Automattic would be to ask for your Mastodon API server, let you log in, and then save your key for future likes/shares/whatevs.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

@kainoa
And to top off the discussion I'll add an obligatory reference to the #Fediverse Enhancement Proposal process, where any dev can take the initiative and bring a particular mechanism into standard use..

Check out: codeberg.org/fediverse/fep

Discussion of #FEPs take place at #SocialHub at: socialhub.activitypub.rocks

in reply to smallcircles (Humanity Now 🕊) Tim Chambers reshared this.

@kainoa
That's definitely something worthy of discussion!

As far as I know there is no FEP for this yet, but we have been discussing introducing a standard for a set of ActivityPub protocol handlers in this issue (the first issue in the fediverse/fediverse-ideas repo!).

Instead of Web Intents, we were discussing custom Web-based protocol handlers, that would be useful for all kinds of ActivityPub actions:

  • Share, like with a "Share to Fediverse" button.
  • Like
  • Follow: this would greatly improve the user experience when following new folks.
  • And more.
in reply to Jeremy Herve Tim Chambers reshared this.

Thank you all so much for your input! With new fedi platforms emerging or gaining traction, the sooner we find a way to standardize things like that, the better it will be for the success and wider adoption of the #Fediverse.
in reply to Panos Damelos Tim Chambers reshared this.

@kainoa this is probably the best time to point out that the @w3c has a group specifically for discussing this kind of issue.

@kainoa fwiw I think custom protocol handlers are the best solution here

@kainoa I love this idea most (besides the WebIntents) because it is not only independent from Mastodon, but also from the fediverse and a generic solution that sadly never established.
in reply to Jeremy Herve

@kainoa these are very specific to ActivityPub and the fediverse, I would suggest to be way more general with web+share: or web+follow: or web+subscribe: to not be compatible with any kind of service/website/cms/blog/… as @paul suggested in his blogpost
in reply to Matthias Pfefferle

👍 I've added a link to @paul's post to the issue:

codeberg.org/fediverse/fediver…

in reply to Jeremy Herve

it is a tragedy that we are discussing the same problems over and over again. I just had a look at my blog and realized that I started writing about WebIntents and Custom Protocol Handlers over 10 years ago notiz.blog/?s=web+intents (I maybe should install a multi language plugin and translate all of this). In most of the cases it ends with someone "having a better idea" and years later we start over again ;)
in reply to Panos Damelos Tim Chambers reshared this.

On our side, @jeremy@fedi.jeremy.hu kicked off a discussion about evolving our Share to Mastodon to be more generic:

github.com/Automattic/jetpack/…

in reply to Kraft Tim Chambers reshared this.

@kainoa great.

Probably the big overlooked item here is that ActivityPub does include a standard API, which would make this process pretty clean.

in reply to Evan Prodromou Tim Chambers reshared this.

@kainoa Could you expand on that? I'm not sure I understand where the API would fit in here, so I'm guessing I'm missing something obvious :)

To me, API means that the visitor aiming to share the post would have to authenticate to their ActivityPub instance to be able to push an update there, but I do not imagine folks would be interested in entering private credentials on sites that are not theirs just to share a post.

Or do you think we should provide the service that would cover all of that? You'd click on the share button, a modal for a service hosted on WordPress.com would open, and there you'd authenticate, then modify / customize the message you want to post, and hit send?

Blender Tip: When clicking and dragging on input boxes in Blender, many of them have hard limits, but most can be bypassed by typing in the box instead. These limits are around to help prevent accidentally grinding your computer to a halt, but don't let that stop you. If you need 10 levels of subdivision, go ahead, click on the box and tell that modifier who's boss.

in reply to Fidel Destro

Technically, they're called soft limits. The hard limits are the ones you can't go beyond even by typing in the field. Soft limits are not always there to prevent long computations but often to prevent most users from using physically inaccurate values (e.g. a diffuse shader with RGB values > 1 or < 0), but still give artistic control to those who want to break the laws of physics.
