My most awaited project of the year, the TROM II documentary, is now finally close to its release! 😃 So I just want to share a few thoughts as to why its so interesting for me:
👉 The entire #documentary, around 5 hours long and divided into 4 parts, is made by a single person ( @Tio ), using only #FOSS software like @Kdenlive for editing, and on a #linux distro (tromjaro.com) as the main OS. This in itself is a very impressive feat! And also a shout-out to the awesome #FreeSoftware / #OpenSource community for how much it has grown. I heard this documentary is the biggest project ever made on #kdenlive so far, and making such a big documentary by a single person is no joke - took years of hard work to complete.
👉 Following a #FediFirst approach, it will be released on #fediverse platforms like @PeerTube first! Free for all to watch without any ads or data collection. I don't know if this will be uploaded to proprietary platforms like #YouTube, tho I'm sure #Peertube will always have top priority 😉
👉 Unlike the first TROM documentary which was released a decade ago, this one features interviews with people like @Sasha, @Aaron, @Dima, @Georgi and Tio himself. They talk about their personal lives, how they grew up in this world and such, their stories are supposed to give us a larger perspective on how our current society works. I can't tell you much more until I get to watch the documentary and see how all of this falls into place 🙂
👉 No stock footage has been used in the documentary! If making a 5 hour documentary doesn't sound hard enough for you then this will do it, lol 😄 So for example if it shows some scientists looking at data in one scene, then its actual scientists looking at actual data that they work on, not some stock footage of actors pointing at screens and faking stuff. Finding real world footage like this is a time consuming task as it'd require going thorugh a lot of documentaries, videos, etc looking for the right clip you need.
👉 If you've ever read any of the TROM e-books or seen their videos before then you'll know how it goes - looking at the world from a scientific perspective, encouraging people to be curious about the world we live in and the universe that surrounds us, and perhaps most important of all, to cut through all of the social constructs we've been accustomed to and see the world for what it really is, because only if we truly understand our world can we solve the many problems that are plaguing our planet right now. To get a little taste of what TROM is about you can try watching these short videos they've released in the past:

⬆️ UPDATE 1: The documentary is likely to be released in a few days from now and so I just wanted to share its official trailer here - videos.trom.tf/w/uzsWV9z42KKG6…
⬆️ Update 2: For those who haven't seen it yet here's the link to watch the whole documentary - tromsite.com/documentaries/tro…
Or you can also watch it directly on Peertube - videos.trom.tf/w/p/fVpfZ9VfWrW…
Based on a recent poll I made on mastodon a staggering number of people aren't even aware of this documentary yet, so please spread the word if you find this valuable 🙏

32. Prison Earth by Sasha
Video inspired by Sasha's article - bigworldsmallsasha.com/2020/01… and recorded/edited by Dima dmitrylisenko.com/Welcome to Prison Earth. If you’re a very well-behaved inmate, you might not even realize that you’re locked up. If you never try to step outside, if you never question the guards or the other prisoners, and you do as they all do- work, work, work- slave your life away, and take “vacations” only when they let you, for as long as they let you- you might never even question the prison. You might be numb to it, quietly existing, working in the system, perhaps drinking or taking pills to cope with the lack of meaning in your imprisoned life.
I hope you’re not like that. I hope you question, and take a step outside, at least with your own mind.

So I was watching this video today, its a #Tromcast about the #Fediverse, and its one of the most interesting discussions I've seen about it. I think it was published a year or two ago, but its still very much relevant today. So the participants were:
@Eugen, founder and lead developer of #Mastodon.
Muppeth from @disroot.
@Hypolite Petovan and @Michael Vogel, lead developers of #Friendica.
And of course @Tio and @Sasha from @TROM, they hosted the podcast.
One thing I liked about this discussion is that it felt very complete to me, everything I wanted them to talk about in a discussion about the fediverse, they did talk about it! Also I just wanna take a moment and say.... What an awesome group of people you got there! 😀 They are such nice and friendly humans, just compare that with the poker face you see on Mark Zuckerberg, LMAO 🤣
So if you like the fediverse and are interested in it then I highly recommend you watch this video, I really enjoyed watching it, put a smile on my face 🙂

I made sure I mentioned these trade-free tools.
I'll make sure I'll mention this a lot and source all of the footage used. Simply because for one it makes the entire thing a lot more real (for example when you see some people pointing at some stars, these are not random people pointing at pointless stuff, are the scientists behind the WEBB telescope for example - footage I took from a documentary); and second because it is a massive amount of work to find footage that is not stock. Luckily I also built videoneat.com/ and I know so many documentaries.
Roko thank you so much my friend! You are so awesome and I hope you won't get too border by the documentary. As I said no huge expectations. And you'll get to watch it very soon ;).

Don't worry I won't get bored by it, lol 😄 I'm actually really curious about it, curious to see all of you and hear your interviews & personal stories, curious to see how you weave these interviews together with facts and knowledge about our world to create an engaging story, curious to see how you did the music, editing, and other audiovisual effects using FOSS softwares like kdenlive, inkscape, krita, etc. Unlike most other documentaries this one was made by the work of one single person, so I'll keep that in mind while watching, to really appreciate your effort :)

WORK TOGETHER? OR HATE TRUMP?
in reply to Rokosun • • •+ = Hats off for a huge feet / work of art
But...
- = Huge filesize with it (my own personal thing about free or DIY is keep options for small is beautiful and not over bloat energy I. E. downloads / streams per user) unless really a final or big thing worth keeping / adding copies online in such sizes per file.
So only these monster rates available for your 4 min movie. .. just for example 1 file
●1440p (3.3mb/s = up + down rate) 102mb ? ?
●1080p (1.9mb/s = up + down rate) 59mb
●720p (1.2mb/s = up + down rate) 37mb
● no 360p?
(take off over'bloat useless 1440p maybe and save planet a bit?)
Again 4 mins of planets energy 102mb up then down + storage 24/7.
Not in balance or care. Measurably.
Consider 360p - knocking off 1440p. And make energy-peace a bit more even if you think it's just an opinion, because you're burning shit up too easily / cheaply.
Can't wait for then 12gb movie documentary ^_^

... show moreIf you're complaining that there isn't a 480p or 360p option available, then from what I understand its because of server limitations - converting the video to more formats require a lot of energy, CPU power, and storage space on the server. Looking at the small number of views these videos have, it might actually save more energy by not providing too many formats, tho the biggest hurdle is still the server cost. Commercial platforms like YouTube are able to provide people with all kinds of formats because they have the money and resources to do so, you can't expect the same from small Peertube instances run by volunteers. At least in Peertube it doesn't track and collect data about their users to then sell it to advertisers, nor does it force you to watch ads in their video player, YouTube does all of these and not only would it consume more energy, data and resources, but it also takes away your privac

I also wanted to point out that its highly subjective to call 1080p & 720p videos as "monster rates" or "over bloat" since a lot of people have screens with that resolution and prefers watching video in that format, on the other hand you have people who watch Netflix in 4k and 8k 🤷 (I'm not encouraging this behavior just pointing it out)
> Consider 360p - knocking off 1440p. And make energy-peace a bit more even if you think it's just an opinion, because you're burning shit up too easily / cheaply.
I don't know where you saw 1440p but it probably has something to do with the height/width ratio of that particular video. And while its true that 360p may consume less MB or storage space, this will also significantly reduce the clarity of the video, sometimes to the point that people with poor eyesight can't read the text on screen or induce eye-strain in some people. The argument about energy can be used against anything really, why not stop making videos and write e-books instead? that'd save a lot more energy, if everyone stops using social media altogether then that'd probably save tons of energy, but we as a society use these things despite their energy expenditure because we find it to be beneficial for us, there are exceptions to this of course but in your case of using 1080p & 720p video quality I don't see this as a waste of energy.

in reply to Rokosun • • •Yes it might actually save more t by not providing too many resized versions online. But... taking massive filesizes (just one) in exchange for lower bandwidth shows you care and is much better/accessible for planet.
We're not all on your style of residential broadband cable REMEMBER THAT- it's important. Even more so for the trade-free or minimalist style people/groups.
Leaving a big version for the heroine-style massive screens ok, but what about the little peeps (small screen & low mobile connection pay-per-gb-of-data) of which are probably more?
so I'll rest my case for that (and as mentioned before for the almost-just-voice-chat videos going to 2gb for 2 hours!).
Thanks for info about Peertube - I did know all that but good to have your blurb about it to advertise to others and save me typing it to someone else :)
Yeah Netflix people who watch Netflix in 4k and 8k - while you don't encourage it I'm suggesting you are for me are already getting to Netflix with your other vids and sizes. I don't think you are totally... so 'a few videos' MIGHT

I don't think you are totally... so 'a few videos' MIGHT save your footprint (or those behind this) but still the ratio kills even if nobody watches it. (See all the backup Tio does, all that is cost even if cheep cheep from US/Amazon S3 etc)
I accept your reply but looking on the previous voice chats etc videos (2gb!! for 2 hours of mostly still faces on screen... with many resized formats) it's clear Gb's and Tb's are not a problem / so cheap (for example getting double for $8 or whatever previously, again honestly mentioned before by Tio). Just sick cheap and wasteful cheap. Bad habits are here and you're not even the main person - I appreciate you being the nice front here while main artist makes massive files.
So offering praise is good but good to really look at all the copies you guys have.
Just too easy probably to make / consume - trade-free or not. .
Measurably speaking... check demographics of devices
●I'd bet mostly people play on mobiles
(you could check this and act accordingly while leaving 1 massive version to see if anyone clicks it)
Remember the default on PeerTube will be lowest resolution usually and most wouldn't even notice the 'detail' on mobile (and not sure if even the documentary would even justify that for its content while some commercial movies are lesser in ratio).
Good luck again.
