Now that we are raising money to pay for a year for all of our servers, our TROM.tf server decided that its main drive is failing....
We have backups to external locations but please be aware if the entire TROM.tf fails may be the drive and we will have to replace it. In the next days we cannot do that (me, Tio, very busy) but as soon as possible we will try to replace the drive. Let's hope it will not fail in the meantime.....

We raised 223€ out of 1.100€:
Campaign here - donorbox.org/pay-for-our-trom-…
Out of 900 Newsletter subscribers and a few hundreds of followers on the fediverse, only 6 people have donated. We will try to reach those who use our TROM.tf services. If only a handful, literally, of people support us financially then perhaps is not sustainable to run services such as Friendica, Nextcloud, Peertube and more for everyone. We can't pay for them ourselves. Myself...Tio.
Even small donations, a cup of coffee, could make an impact a little bit. We will see by the end of this month how things go. If we really cannot get enough support to pay 1.000€ for our servers for a year, then we need to make our instances only for us at TROM and move to a cheaper server solution.
It is sad. But is no option on the table. Without financial support I cannot pay some 100€ a month for the servers.
Massive thank you to the 6 people who donated! It helps a lot.

Please help us Pay for our TROM servers for a year donorbox.org/pay-for-our-trom-…
Here is the newsletter we sent: newsletter.tromsite.com/archiv…
It is very difficult recently to manage it all inside this Trade Society. Every little financial help, helps!
Mind you there are thousands of people who use our TROM.tf services, and also take value from our many projects and TROM content. So if possible to help us a bit financially.
Thanks a lot!

You should follow Big World small Sasha on Peertube - videos.trom.tf/c/big_world_sma…
She is making very interesting hiking videos. And she posts on Peertube! :)
We need more people who create original content to use Peertube. Without the content the platform cannot evolve.

Thank you Ognjen for becoming our new TROM Supporter - tromsite.com/donate/
We create a lot of trade-free stuff, and hopefully this month we will release something new. Let's see.
We need 200 people to donate €5 a month in order to support our projects long term. We only accept equal donations of €5 to spread the load and make everyone equal within this campaign.
See the donation page for a detail look at what TROM does ;)

Many thanks to everyone to is still supporting TROM financially - tromsite.com/donate/
We ask for 5€ donations if anyone can help, to distribute the financial burden and not rely on a few individuals. There are 83 people supporting us monthly. If anyone thinks this project is worth supporting please see the donation page and help. There we explain all what we do.

Thank you Ondine for becoming our new TROM supporter tromsite.com/donate/ - it is so motivating to see new people supporting TROM. Makes you want to put more effort into it, create new things, etc.!
If we get 12 more people to donate 5€ a month we can do these:
We will start a video series for TROM, similar to the books' content.
We will bring back TROMnews because the world needs a good news website.
We will increase the TROM Files storage space to 20GB for all.
That would be fantastic!

And thank you to everyone who supports TROM financially. We do a lot of projects. We provide a Friendica instance and have over a thousand users, a Peertube instance with unlimited uploads, a Nextcloud instance providing 10GB of space for everyone and a full Office Suite...a custom Linux distribution, a documentaries-based website...
See our donation page how many things we do. And we will do more!

We will update our TROM Social tomorrow!
Be aware that some things may not work well for hours. And in case of failure it will take us some time to restore from a backup. Let's hope all will go well. And if you'd like to support what we do and pay for our servers, you can consider a donation here tromsite.com/donate/ . Is up to you, our services will always be trade-free regardless. Cheers! @Tio

Surely in this case though you could comply just by defederating that particular piece of content / user?
It's interesting though that Amazon are recognizing Peertube content, even if just for copyright. That to me suggests they're keeping an eye on it, even if they likely don't consider it a major threat... yet.

I don't think that's how @peertube works. Remote videos are discoverable by searching on a PT service, but it's the viewer that's seeding them by watching (because WebTorrent), not the PT service providing the search results.
You're right that copyright lawyers and often judges haven't cared much about such nuances though, or we would have won the CopyWars.

As other have said (and may yet say) IANAL
*That said* there is a vast difference between "hosted on" and "served from"
Your instance may *not* be the sole source for that content, but if a video consumer *gets* it though you, guess what?
It doesn't matter what "makes sense"
This is law, and lawyer-speak
Good luck with it

And you clearly don't understand the usage of the word "Federated"
Which is super common around here
Being federated makes *every* federated instance the [a] source
There is no one single point source -- the sources are all federated into multi-point "sources"

If a forum page embeds a YT video isn't it displaying just a link?
Anyway, if we become relevant they will drown us in lawsuits, not because their claims are reasonable but because we can't afford the lawyers to prove that.
That's how the justice system works.
I guess only #EFF could solve this by defending some cases to establish a rule of law.

As long as the video in question is not stored on your server and is just streamed from a different instance then that instance should be contacted for the removal - that's what any competent lawyer would do. But now what they've achieved is merely made us put up a curtain to hide the video from their view, a video that still exists on the original instance and free for anyone to watch.

You probably intended this as a nonchalant segue into your next point (I've done this). But FYI it comes across as quite patronising and out of context. @trom is hosting a PeerTube server. Chances are they have a pretty good understanding of the range of things "federated" can mean in this context.

You're not wrong that a lawyer might see a search result as a 'source' for copyright purposes. This is exactly what they've done with TPB et al. But ...
@FinchHaven
> federated makes *every* federated instance the [a] source
On Mastodon et al, yes. Because text posts are automatically delivered in full to everyone following the account that posted it. But PeerTube doesn't work that way, it just sends a title and a link to followers (or the wasted storage and bandwidth would be extreme).

in reply to TROM • • •Well. I think this is analogous for holding torrent tracker owners liable for torrent content.
The contents of torrents tracked by a tracker never go even near the tracker. The tracker only helps leechers find seeders. But still, somehow, magically, the tracker owner is doing the copyright infringement.

I'm guessing it was probably some conspiracy theorist nonsense about aliens, or else he wouldn't describe a documentary as garbage.
People watch documentaries to learn about something real and true, but if it's full of misinformation then it is not only a garbage film but also harmful to society.
