Algebra is more than alphabet soup – it’s the language of algorithms and relationships
What do Sudoku, AI, Rubik’s cubes, clocks and molecules have in common? They can all be reimagined as algebraic equations. The Conversation
In-browser transcoding of video files with FFmpeg and WebAssembly
The WebAssembly build of FFmpeg allows you to run this powerful video processing tool directly within the browser. In this blog post I explore FFmpeg.Scott Logic
Humans have been fascinated by prime numbers for thousands of years — from ancient bone carvings to today’s high-tech computer searches.
The quest for ever-larger primes continues but now it includes algorithms and prize money.

Prime numbers, the building blocks of mathematics, have fascinated for centuries − now technology is revolutionizing the search for them
Today, people use complex computing networks to search for prime numbers with millions of digits. But early mathematicians were running these calculations by hand. The Conversation

Here's the question for May 8th from the AMS Daily Epsilon of Math Calendar. For those unfamiliar with the calendar, the answer is always the day of the month. Looking for imaginative solutions is the aim.
@strypey @jan Will this go anywhere without #Mastodon , i.e. Gargron being open to change? 🤔
Listed some of my pain points here: fosstodon.org/@nilesh/11355899…
If there's an alternate implementation that fixes these and persuades #Fosstodon and #mathstodon admins to switch, my hopes for #ActivityPub would go 10x up.
@christianp and other #mathstodon folks, is there any ongoing work in getting LaTeX (or any #math notation) supported across all #Mastodon instances (and perhaps across all of Fediverse)? Is there a github issue I can monitor?
It's very annoying that for posts like this 👇, I have to go read it on the original site:
We're really excited to welcome @ToposInstitute to the Fediverse!
The Topos Institute are a nonprofit that brings together academics, scientists and technologists from across the globe.
If you're an academic, scholar, you just want to support a really meaningful nonprofit, we highly recommend giving them a follow!

When I saw this toot I was thinking "oh, what kind of math? Category theory? Graph theory? Abstract algebra?"
For better or worse the math described seems to be largely tracking calories expended and consumed during the race. I'm afraid I don't have experience with doing higher mathematics at any pace faster than a moderate walk. #mathstodon
