I know it's not "an alternative", but I recently discovered invidious and it's awesome.
it's a self hostable YouTube frontend, (with loads of public instances). it cuts out the ads, and dials down the noisy UI. Additional features like downloading videos. it's pretty great!

All that is true and we are right to criticize them for it. But at what point should we stop support all together?
