I wish I could force every legislator
in favor of Age Verification to watch this amazing talk by Carissa Véliz,

So that they understand the dangers
of the surveillance infrastructure they are currently putting in place.

You should watch it too: youtube.com/watch?v=xSPRouBvgF…

Age Verification isn't a technical problem to solve. If you think that, you're missing the point.

It's a social problem used by authoritarian governments as an excuse for population control and censorship.

It's a fundamental attack on free speech and democracy.

It must not be accommodated.
It must be stopped.

I agree with most of your concerns, but I find it necessary to point out the problematic nature of your insisting that something is impossible while at the same time refusing to take the time to read an article from a reputable source explaining how it is, in fact, possible.
Zero Knowledge Proof age verification doesn't solve all of the problems you mentioned, but it solves most of them, in provably, cryptographically secure ways.

Well, today is the day. I'm finally "sorta happy enough to pull the trigger" on publishing the book I've been working on for a very long time. It's a technical history book: by a techie, for techies (although I think that between all the code samples, there is plenty of meat for "tech-adjacent" and "tech-interested" people). It tells the story of the Lisp programming language, invented by a genius called John McCarthy in 1958 and today still going strong (to the extent that many people see it as the most powerful programming language in existence).

And this is a time for shameless self promotion, even if you don't plan on buying the book, please repost :-). Self-publishing is self-marketing, so there we go.

If you do buy and read it, please let me know how you liked it!

The book landing page, berksoft.ca/gol, has links to all outlets where you can buy the book,

I urge all developers of #Android apps to NOT pre-emptively obey the new terms of #Google requiring you to sign up for the Android Developer Console.

It looks like Google is attempting a power grab and wants to prevent ALL installations of Android apps without official Google approval; even those installed outside Google Play.

This is an attack on both developer and user freedom and unacceptable.

Speaking of Android being locked down by Google, two weeks ago I saw a post on your forum about a Free Android SDK project that could be a drop-in replacement for the standard SDK (that creates a legally binding contract with Google on current ToS). Sadly, the last message is from October.
Is there any progress on this front, or Google already managed to lock down this part of Android?

Google announced that as of September 2026, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google. This registration will involve:

- Paying a fee to Google
- Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions
- Providing government identification
- Uploading evidence of the developer’s private signing key
- Listing all current and future application identifiers

I personally think the mandatory #Android app developer registration that #Google wants to enforce starting in September 2026 and that will prevent the installation of apps of non-registered developers is in breach of Article 5 (5) of the EU Digital Markets Act.

I therefore just sent a complaint to the European Commission and asked them to enforce the requirements of the EU DMA.

in reply to F-Droid

You probably refer to Recital 50 of the Digital Markts Act and its implementation in Article 6 of the Digital Markets Act?

I would assume the last sentence of that recital to be relevant as well: „The gatekeeper should be prevented from implementing such measures as a default setting or as pre-installation.“

Here I am hoping Google goes through with this... I would love to see wide masses to move towards real alternatives to duopoly. I have moved to use #SailfishOS as my main device, as it seems to be most mature Linux option. And finally after long time #Jolla is bringing on the market Linux phone with decent specs!

THREAD:

Selam fediverse friends,

A first in my career: I've co-produced an episode of the Al Jazeera TV show...The Listening Post and it will air tomorrow!

As you all know well, outrage over genocide in Gaza means Israel has lost the streets and the campuses of the western world.

So, Israel appears to have decided to focus its efforts on selling its narrative to....African audiences.

Also...tomorrow's episode will also feature the queen herself...Dr @timnitGebru

Israel appears to be studying the results, country by country. For instance, following intense backlash from Moroccan journalists against colleagues who traveled to Israel, this year, Israel could not find journalists from Morocco. It sent a cultural troupe to instead.

All in all, our weakness as Africans? Too many dictatorships. A robust press culture would have us better resist efforts by not only Israel, but China and Russia as well, to sell us questionable narratives that violate humanity.

in reply to Zecharias Zelalem

Tomorrow, we shine a light on Israel's African psy-op, and hold our fellow African journalists, responsible for coverage that dehumanizes Palestinians and downplays their suffering...to account.

Tomorrow, on Al Jazeera's The Listening Post.

Airs at 19h00 GMT. I would appreciate your time!

Cheers,
-ZZ.

If you would like to help financially support the development of a new Wayland compositor for Xfce, you can do so by contributing funds via our #OpenCollective accounts.

For US contributions:

For EU contributions:

These contributions will help pay for the funding of longtime Xfce core developer Brian Tarricone to create xfwl4, a brand-new Wayland compositor for Xfce.

Once you realize it’s not “age verification”, but actually “identity verification”, then it’s easy to understand that the real goal is “papers, please” for the entire internet.

🚨 New research from ETH Zurich has found that popular password manager's zero-knowledge encryption claims don't fully hold up if their servers are compromised. ⚠️

🔑 LastPass, Dashlane & Bitwarden were identified as being affected, this is significant because cloud password managers commonly claim that their user's data would be unaffected if they were compromised. 👾

✅ Dashlane & Bitwarden promptly issued fixes.

❌ LastPass did not issue a fix and stated: "our own assessment of these risks may not fully align with the severity ratings assigned by the ETH Zürich team."

💡In 2022, LastPass experienced a breach that impacted 1.6 million users due to inadequately strong technical and security measures within their infrastructure.

The best time to switch from LastPass was yesterday; the second best is today. 🗑️

Lastpass is an absolutely AWFUL company.

After LogMeIn got their hands on them the prices skyrocketed from $12 to $24 to $36 to $48 a year for their premium plan.

I switched to Bitwarden, who have kept their premium plan at just $10 a year, for many years now.

With ownership of Lastpass now in the hands of not one, but two investment companies, one really has to question where Lastpass's priorities lie.
