Tomorrow is the big day! JWST is the largest, most powerful space telescope ever built so far, and its first full-color images and spectroscopic data are gonna be released. I'm excited! 😀

If you didn't know, @Tio is currently working on a big ass documentary called TROM II, and its probably the biggest project ever done using #kdenlive - the free and opensource video editor. And I know it features some awesome humans like @Sasha, @Aaron, @Georgi, @Dima and of course Tio 🙂

And if you know this project @TROM and have been following their work, then you know its gonna be awesome, just take a look at these videos they made a while ago:
videos.trom.tf/w/jrLmgWLj9nWsd…
videos.trom.tf/w/tVV1uZFkYPYJG…
Now those videos were 4 minutes and 11 minutes respectively, now just imagine what they could do in a multi hour documentary!

I'm super excited for its release and I know they'll be uploading it to their @PeerTube instance. I've always been a fan of their #FediFirst approach 😀

:) I hope people will find it valuable. And for those who may not be at all familiar with TROM and what we do, this documentary will be release for free of course, like everything that we do. And there is no catch to any of this. That's how things should be done, for the sake of doing them, not to buy a new phone or pay your rent. Trade-Free. :)

That is why I mentioned in my post that you guys would upload this documentary to peertube, I thought that'd imply that its free without any subscription, ads, or data collection. But yeah its better to be clear that this won't be commercialized in any way, completely trade-free 😀

You know what, when I learned about the names of some common emojis I got very confused & surprised!

😂 - this emoji is often used by me and many others to show a laughing face, but apparently its called "face with tears of joy" !

😋 - I have sometimes used this emoji to show a silly face, but its actually called "face savoring food".

I wonder if this confuses people using screen readers, or do they understand these differences ?

That's what I thought. Now I gotta learn to use the more appropriate emoji, rather than going with like meme-culture meanings my friends would also use.

Some of the emoji also don't look exactly what we'd want to express, so we end up using emoji that would be technically wrong. It's also a bit worse with other emoji fonts whose own art style can make people use or not use some emoji. Most of the emoji are pretty straightforward across fonts, but some of them look not as we'd expect or think.

in reply to Devin Prater

You use a screen reader right? Have those emojis ever confused you? Especially that laughing emoji is very popular, it looks more like "tears from laughing too hard" than "tears of joy". So my question is, before reading my post did you knew that people meant laughing when they used that emoji?

And @Hawlucha is right, different programs show these emojis in a different way, in my browser it looks flat, in my phone it has a little 3D effect. I wish these things were more consistent.

in reply to kc

Its a very common emoji actually, I use it a lot too. I was very surprised to find that its actually trying to depict "tears of joy" and not "tears of laughter". I think this is an issue with unicode, they should've made these more clear. And when someone realizes that this emoji is commonly used to show laughter, then that clears the misunderstanding. I made this post to make more people aware of this since I didn't see anyone else talking about it.

On Birdapp, they used to show the unicode name if you hovered over the emoji, but then it went away. (My guess is some exec decided "everyone uses their phone anyway and you can't hover the cursor on phones"). So this whole issue is impacted by the fact that to those not using a screen reader, the names are usually nowhere to be found in the moment. 🤷 The apps don't let us make informed decisions about the accessibility of our emoji use.
in reply to Rokosun

I would argue that emoji is closer to language than say, simple UI glyphs. A ui glyph attempts to reduce ambiguity, but language is complex and nuanced. Like a word, an emoji may have one strict definition, but people will use it creatively and without checking a dictionary first.

I can’t speak from personal experience, but would anticipate someone using a screen reader would parse emoji content in the same way they interpret the choice of words in the context.

@Tio I just sent a private message from my Mastodon account to my Friendica account, nothing weird about that. But the unexpected thing is that Friendica automatically boosted/reshared that message. This is very strange because private messages are not supposed to be boosted/reshared, even that little "reshare" button is not shown when you're viewing a private message.

@Matthias/E Yes that's what I wrote at the end:

When I open the same profile page from my mastodon account or just open the profile link in a different browser, then this reshared post doesn't even show there.

Maybe there is no privacy issues with this, IDK, as far as I know I'm the only person who can see the message on my own profile. But its still quite weird because private messages are not supposed to be reshared, I don't know if this would cause any other problems in the future.

Wow, I was actually able to login to my Friendica account using the #Fedilab app!

@Fedilab Apps I was a bit busy with other things for a few days so I couldn't do much testing during that time, but now when I tried to login to my Friendica account on the latest fedilab release (3.0.5), it worked! Thanks a lot for working on adding Friendica support, I will be doing more testing with this account now :)

Linux tips

Some #linux #commands are very useful but hard to remember. Don't you think it'll be nice if we could easily #bookmark these commands in the #terminal ?

Well, I found something that does exactly this 😀 - github.com/dzervas/fzf-command…

In short, this is how it works 👇

You write down a command, then press "Ctrl + k" to bookmark the command.

Pressing "Ctrl + space" or "Ctrl + @" will let you search through all your bookmarks and select the command you want.

This post was waaaaay longer than I expected, but damn that was one of the wildest things I've ever read. Took me 2 days to finish reading, but so fucking worth it.

Anyway, so this is a blog post about why @Tio and @Sasha got married and what they had to go through for that. Reading this was like going through an emotional roller-coaster, at one point I'm laughing hysterically, at another I'm almost about to cry, so many unexpected twists and turns, lol. Tio I'm glad you wrote this blog post in such a great detail, maybe it'd open up some people's eyes about these things, or at least make them understand people like you. TBH I never expected this much drama in this post, reading through some of those things almost made be cry, I'm sorry you had to go through all that, but I'm even more saddened by the fact that what you experienced was just a glimpse of the reality outside.

In the end I'm happy that both of you are together now, I think you guys deserve each other ❤️

heh yeah...people have no clue how fucked up our society is, simply because they learn not to "disturb" it. Most people are compliant slaves, and they never will poke at this society to see how truly fucked up it is. They think we live in a democracy, with rules and laws to keep things organized and such. But these are the working slaves who will go to school, then have a job, get married, buy a house, get in debt, stay in the same place, go to holidays, and have the same exact life like everyone else. For them facebook is a great social platform, the gov is a good parent to have, the society is working.

Anyway....the fact that 2 humans cannot live together on this planet for no reason other than "papers", is fucked up to say the least.

@Tio @Sasha I was actually familiar with this idea of marriage being a ritual and a human invention, even before I met you guys I heard this idea somewhere and it stuck with me. Its funny because even people who understands that religion is a human invention, sometimes even they can't wrap their head around the fact that marriage is one. I'm not trying to make fun of people here, I understand that they're just accustomed to these values from growing up in such cultures. Like you mentioned in that blog post, its really sad because there are lots of good humans out there with kind hearts, they just grew up in a weird and fucked up world, this is actually one of the saddest things I've ever seen, I was able to understand all your frustrations and sadness because I'm also kinda "weird" like you. But I don't know how to describe it to people because most of them consider this as a normality :(

@Tobias @Michael Vogel @Hypolite Petovan Maybe its better to allow users to choose this for themselves. Some users may prefer to see their own abstracts, this improves consistency and would also work as a preview. Some other users may want to hide their own abstracts like the above message explains. So letting the users choose for themselves might be a good idea 🤔

Testing abstracts in Friendica
Huh, I can see the abstract as a content warning from mastodon, but here on Friendica it doesn't even show me there is a content warning on that post. This only happens with my own posts BTW, when someone else on mastodon puts up a content warning then it'll show up on my friendica, but not when I put one on my own post. Weird.....

My apology would be something like "Sorry I didn't mean to be rude, I have edited the post above to make it more clear". I don't think this would confuse people at all, and mastodon even allows users to look at the history of an edited post so they can look at my old post if they want. Mastodon also gives people a notification about my edit if they have interacted with that post in any way.

@tio made another TROMjaro video 🙂 - videos.trom.tf/w/bE5Rw3pc5WvmL…

Tio's sound is a bit different this time because he has COVID, wishing you a quick recovery my friend :blobcatheart:

If you watch this video you'll understand how awesome XFCE is, I'm impressed by how such a lightweight DE could be this much extensible. And of course #TROMjaro takes all of this awesomeness and makes it usable and easy for users, having sane defaults is very important if you're new to linux.

@Tio

is not very comfortable with using the terminal so he always prefers GUI programs if available. But me being a fan of the linux #terminal, I wanted to help them improve it. Tio now calls me "The terminal guy", haha 😂

Anyway, if you wanna know what exactly we changed and what all features were added you can read through our release notes here - forum.tromjaro.com/t/tromjaro-…
(Just read under the section "Making the the terminal super cool.")

l also added a little "vim_mode" for all the vim fans 😉

So you use linux, that's nice 🙂. And its useful to know the basic terminal commands, you can always just look up the man pages to show you more info when you need it :)

I'm now more experienced with terminals, and I've tweaked a bunch of things to make them easier for me, the post above explains some of it. I don't know what exactly it was, but I think it was learning vim that actually made me realize that terminal is easier to use in some cases compared to a GUI.

Thank you to @fosstodon admins @kev & @mike for adding this emoji upon my request, you guys are awesome 🥰

#Tromjaro linux has a nice little thing that I believe is useful for all linux users, this is it - tromjaro.com/apps/

You can find hundreds of Trade-free linux apps there, all of them are GUI programs and there are screenshots attached for each one. Even though TROMjaro is not my daily driver I sometimes use this service to search for apps like photo editors, video players, etc.

The install button on these pages may only work on TROMjaro, but its very easy for me to find the package name.

It was 1972, and I was in S. Korea, at an airport waiting for a flight that got delayed. Bonus, a bowling alley nearby to kill some time!

I rent my shoes, find a ball I like and roll my first ball down the alley.

I knocked down all but 1 pin!

THEN, 4 arms come down from above the pins and start clearing away what I'd knocked down.

They were still using pin-boys! 😁

@tio just made a video showcasing the Layout switcher & Theme switcher apps on TROMjaro - videos.trom.tf/w/gsVhyEnuVyCFF…

Having been worked on both of these apps, I'm very happy to see it in action 😃

Today if you search online most of the videos showcasing this distro were showing the old gnome version, even though last year TROMjaro moved to XFCE and a lot of things have changed since then. So yeah, this new video will be useful for giving people more relevant & updated info.
