The social impacts of moderation & censorship
An adblock-like solution for the fediverse. Thoughts?
Hey people on the fediverse, I have a serious question/proposal. I talked about this in the past, but I want to create a thread about it and I will tag a few...social.trom.tf
Nitter, Invidous and the like, cannot be blamed for fetching remote content from twittter or Youtube. So if someone posts child porn, or god forbid GUNS on twitter or youtube, and others access it via our nitter/invidious instances, it is not even legal in our stupid world of stupid laws, to accuse me. It is simply proxying and the content from youtube/twitter is not even on my server. Perhaps federated networks should do that if possible. It is already doing something similar in the sense that I, as admin, can choose to remove remote cached content daily or immediately. You can still connect to others, but the content needs to be fetched every time you "poke" at them or something like that...
This is the saner way of doing it. Not the butcher way please! Cut and slice! But the librarian way. Sit down and come up with a solution that is future-proof and does not impede people's ability to connect with others.

(mind if I don't reply all at once? it may become quite long otherwise, and some subtopics make sense to be split)
different people want to block different types of stuff than others.
What I meant with unfair moderation is when the same content is treated differently according to who wrote it. For example, see this comment on a Lemmy drama. The first user seemed to benefit from a laxist treatment because they shared the admins' political opinion, hence the accusations of unfair moderation. (for the record, that first person ended up getting a 5-days ban) Please, anyone reading this, let us not turn this about a discussion of whether or not there was a double standard, I only meant to say that this kind of double standards may exist, and not every dispute on moderation concerns the two types mentioned in the OP

Okay I understand what you mean now. So your point was that moderators could treat people differently based on their political believes, religion, race, etc. This might happen sometimes, as moderators are humans too, and well, humans can be biased. For example, an admin might be more reluctant to block an instance if they have close friends on it compared to other instances where they don't know anyone (so they block it without much thought). I think this could be seen as one more reason why users choosing for themselves is better than letting admins handle everything.

And you also made some good points earlier, and that's what initially gave me the idea to write that post.
If my friend is on a poorly moderated instance, I want to get them off of that instance, not make an exception to my block just for them.
If you want to pressure your friends into leaving (what you define as) bad instances, you still can decide to not unblock them, except you have to take responsibility for that.
there is no pressure on admins to actually moderate their instances
There is still actually the pressure related to discoverability. There is also the question of what happens to boosts.

I just ran this command:
sudo tblock -Uy
Its so satisfying to block out all the bad stuff 😇
@tblock, do I have to manually run this command to update my filter rules? Or does it do that automatically in the background?

Thank you for that info 🙂
I noticed that after I ran that command the redirection changed from 127.0.1.1 to 0.0.0.0 which is much better.

So last night I posted a bunch of links to jnktn.tv, and for those who's wondering, no its not a scam or anything! lol 😅
So it was a livestream from @jnktn_tv, and they use the free and open source platform @owncast for all of their streaming 😉
And this time it was @gabek doing the show, the music was so cool, and the set and everything was lit, a freaking live party!
I guess I only saw the last 30 minutes or something, but I wish I'd joined earlier 'cause that was awesome! 😁

Today was a comfy day!
I'd taken the bus, then the metro 🚝 to visit a bookstore.
I'd purchased 4 books ☺️, namely:
- Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie
- Short Stories, by O.Henry
- The Magicians of Mazda, by Ashwin Sanghi
- The Case of the Velvet Claws, by Erle Stanley Gardner
Most of them were second-hand ones, which I prefer, coz they cheap! 😇
I liked roaming around in that area of the city. It was so 'walkable' and safe for pedestrians. There were very few cars, which also shouldn't've been there!
Loads of shops to pop into: some street food, pubs, book shops, eateries, hawkers hawking all kinds of fancy fare, etc. 'Twas nice to see lots of people buyin' books! 😇
'Tis the best part of the city! 🥳

I forgot what the default setting in Friendica was, but they allow the user to set if they want to apply CWs for replies or not, and I've enabled it on my account :)
@Émilie Mastodon Edition @frankie Yes Em, content warnings in Friendica are called abstracts and they're part of the BBCode markup language that Friendica use.
Here is more information about Abstracts in Friendica - wiki.friendi.ca/docs/abstract

Related to the above poll, I would also like to know how many of you have hidden by boosts from your timeline.
For those who don't know, yes its a feature on mastodon, you can hide someone's boosts if you want, more info here - mstdn.social/@feditips/1052838…

- Didn't know I could do that, I'll hide your boosts (40%, 4 votes)
- No, I don't wanna hide your boosts (60%, 6 votes)
Oh, these poll results are quite interesting..... 😁
So I actually expected more people will say its annoying when I boost other posts, because that's what I do most often. But apparantly not a single person voted for that, lol 😄
And 17% votes said its annoying when I boost my own posts. I don't think I boost a lot my old posts, but I do boost my replies sometimes, so I wonder if this is what they meant 🤔
1/3
So because of the way mastodon works, it'll only show you a reply on your timeline if you're following both the person who replied and the one they replied to, unless they boosted it, then you'll see that reply as a boost. This is different for platforms like Friendica where by default they'll show you all of the replies of people you follow, this behavior can be changed in settings though.
2/3
And looking at the 2nd poll it shows that not many people were aware of this feature in mastodon that allows you to hide someone's boosts. Its great that mastodon gives people this option, because it means if someone don't like my boosts they can just hide it themselves 😁
One thing to note here is that if you hide someone's boosts then it'll hide all of their boosts, including when they boost their own posts or other's, so be aware of that.

It's a couple hours drive and we used to make mix tapes, then CDS. Now we make playlists.
