Best Coastal Hikes in l'Estartit + Testing New Gear (part 2): La Foradada to Cala Pedrosa
I woke up in a beautiful spot on La Foradada, watched the sunrise from the highest point, then hiked to Cala Pedrosa. All of these hikes are quite close to the GR92, so you can do them as a variant of the GR 92 thru-hike if you have the time.Cala Pedrosa is also the bay where I met my octopus friend videos.trom.tf/w/svf9xeAmkEzgz… that's why I was so keen to jump in the water even though in April the sea temperature is still around 14°C 😄

We have received a Copyright claim from Amazon for our @PeerTube instance videos.trom.tf/ . Hetzner, the hosting company where we have the dedicated server at, gave us 24h to resolve it.
The problem?
The video in question, a documentary about "aliens", a garbage piece of content, was NOT hosted on our instance, of course. But since Peertube is federated the idiots sent the claim to our hosting company. Even if UNDER the video you can see that video is "Posted By:" and the instance and username. It takes a few seconds to see where the video is hosted.
But who cares...maybe Amazon has "AI Agents" employed and they simply find a video of theirs on a URL and see the IP of that URL and submit a Copyright claim to the hosting where that domain is registered?!
Bunch of idiots.
But it is very concerning the fact that they can do these and we, the ones who host (and for free for that matter), need to quickly "fix" these things even if the claim has nothing to do with our server.
We eventually had to block that URL, thanks Peertube for allowing that, else these idiots cannot understand that it was not us who were hosting that video.

Because I saw a bunch of science "creators" making videos about this Project Hail Mary movie, and speaking positively about it, as if "hey they present some real science there", I decided to watch it.
I gave up watching movies years ago when I discovered....reality. Which is so much more fascinating, creative, complex, awesome. Documentaries were my new passion.
Anyway, I just watched 1h of it and I had to give up. What a nonsense of a thing. I thought I may have pirated an intentionally bad copy of the movie, one meant to trick the pirates haha.
I find it hard to believe that people watch hours of such silly and nonsensical content. What a waste.
Wanna see something scientific, thrilling, and exciting about an "alien encounter"? Here videoneat.com/documentaries/25…
Or watch the movie Contact videoneat.com/movies/21602/con…
Sure these fantasy things are subjective, but man'o'man what a silly movie. The production company must have paid some of these "science creators" to talk about it.

Yeah that's what I hear as well. If you go into this expecting to watch a nerdy science movie you will be disappointed, once I got that it made more sense to me. People love this movie because it has a heart.
BTW, if you wanna know more about the science part then I recommend watching this video - youtube.com/watch?v=82t1aBvFdJ…
I realized that there is a lot more science to the story than the movie shows.

Well even if you add some science to the plot, you add so much nonsense: from how you misrepresent a space mission (that main character and everyone around him act like emotional idiots all the time) to the absolute nonsense of being able to "talk" to that "alien" and make jokes and all that. Beyond stupid. Try to do that with penguins first and let me know. There is no "realism" or science into that. Even the idea of those "astrophages" is a wild idea.
Anyway, this was the most silly thing I watched recently, and sometimes I also watch silly reddit videos haha.
I know it's a bit silly but that's fine, it's just a movie not an encyclopedia lol 😄 And to me this still feels miles ahead from those movies where people go to alien planets and not worry about the different atmospheres and such, or those movies with humanoid aliens like ET and Avatar - this story even got relativistic physics like time dilation and length contraction.
Also I never felt like any of the characters were emotional idiots, there may be a bit of silliness and humor in the story but I think the emotions were done right.
This is a bit of a tangent but have you ever felt like humans would be better off if we didn't have any emotions?
Oh c'mon the main character is like the 90s silly "science guy". I've seen this character a million times. It is boring already haha. Out of 8 billion humans this one was the most capable to go to a nearby star to understand wtf is happening there, and save the humans. Their "gatherings", jokes, silliness they were having to decide who to go and what is the plan, is like a Steven Seagall movie from the 80s.
Terrible movie. That is what I think.
Maybe it's not your cup of tea, that's okay. You never answered my tangent question tho.....
Yeah I know it's a strange question but I've thought about how emotions influence us.... Obviously there are benefits to it like empathy and love which makes us care for each other and the world around us, but sometimes it can also be misleading or cause us to make bad decisions..... Emotions are a big part of why us humans enjoy art and creativity, stories, music, etc. It is certainly an interesting trait.....
I personally liked the movie but yeah I expected there to be more science in it, and after hearing about the book it's based on there seem to be a lot more science in the story which are simply not shown in the movie. I heard that initially when they made it the movie was 4 hours long so they had to trim it down.
I will watch Contact and that documentary you shared above. I also recommend you watch The Expanse if you like good science based fiction, it's still one of the best.

as if movies are real
well, isn't it what you're doing here ? It's not called documentary right ? It's far worse to make a so called documentary that is actually full of inaccuracies and untold extrapolation for sensationalism (I know a bunch of them). Here you may say people are deceived. But if they can't make the difference between a movie and a lesson, well that's there problem and the education system's problem I guess, not the fracking movie.. What about people following random youtubers advice ? should we judge them too ?
Same as Rhysy, I work in radioastronomy and loved the movie, I didn't judge it like it was a scientific article, because it wasn't. There are some things I found not credible or not coherent, but it didn't ruin the overall pleasure of being told a story. Anyway, it's a fracking movie ! Go read the book, a very nice piece of scientific extrapolation, the description of a completely different alien life form is particularly well made.
Now some movies you like, some you don't, nothing new here. I also loved contact, which is full of bullshit too by the way. If you ask my parents, the very subject of alien encounter is ridiculous, we all have a different level and different ways of suspending disbelief. I tend to think this does not automatically make us all retards..

This particular movie was advertised on "science channels", this is how I got to know about it. My expectation was that maybe it is at leas like The Martian. It was not. It was a bad comedy full of silly ideas and boring dialogues. And what bothers me most is that these nonsense things get so popular in our society, while reality is sidelined.
People indeed get their judgement from movies many times, which is sad.
At least in Contact scientists act like scientists, and the "alien" part is far more credible and scientific.
In this Mary movie, the "scientists" are portrayed as goofballs, emotional 90s space-dudes. This movie is as silly as that Armageddon one where they were taking guns in space.
Anyway, my point was that I am surprised people can sit and watch such nonsense for 2 and a half hours. And how different it seemed to me from what it was advertised.
Feel free to like it. I think it was garbage. :P
Well the martian also got a bunch of harsh critics on the scientific credibility. I hear your pain on increased silliness, I tend to share it but more on the story telling side, movies are just poorly made on average, because a high budget means lots of spectators needed so everything is made "average" which is artistically a catastrophy. That said, I found hail mary was rather a breath of fresh(er) air in a sea of mediocre spectacles. I mean for once it was a novel story, not a n-th episode of the mary-verse, but still based on existing and solid book material, that counts a lot, and they did not do a bad work at adaptation, which is a very hard exercise.
Anyway, there is no sense in convincing you it is actually good, but the funniest part of the movie is always the intense discussion when exiting the theater :P
Yeah I must say the goofballs style annoyed me at the beginning, then I played along. Also I can certify labs are full of goofballs, and worse (especially the not funny ones). On the alien part, read the book or just take a look at the wikipedia page, the description of the life form is really fascinating I find. Unfortunately they didn't took time to develop that in the movie, but that would have been quite complicated given the story line I guess, so emotion was prioritized.
To conclude and definitely disqualify my judgement : I just loved Armageddon :P
For frack sake I even loved independence day, that tells you how bad I like aliens..
And despite my liking, something that goes your way : I saw it in a cinema, the marketing campaign had been much intense. At the end of the movie, I thought "yay, they're doing alien invasion films again, I like it". And then I heard the audience applauding the stuff, like it was a great piece of art or something. That really punched me in the face, like all you need is bombarding people with propaganda... But as said, we were craving for SF movies at the time, that may explain part of it maybe.
Rhysy likes this.
I also like really stupid movies ! The Core is probably one of my worst guilty pleasures...
I mean, it's fine to hate stupid movies, it really is. Not everyone has the same taste in fiction, and that's fine. But if the problem is somehow that "scientists aren't goofballs", then you haven't met many. I mean, I was literally just given a handful of space-themed chocolate for helping to pack up a cardboard radio telescope for public outreach. I've been paid NASA money to photograph a potato. I narrated an interpretative dance routine with exploding balloons full of glitter for our head of department's 65th birthday. Don't tell me real scientists are deeply serious people, because we're not.
I loved Contact also, but while it has sensible flux units and even knows what L-band is, it also features Jodie Foster literally plugging a pair of headphones into a radio telescope because that's supposedly a better way to find the signals. Utter nonsense. Is it still a good movie ? Of course !
Robert Biloute - on diaspora-fr.org likes this.
By goofballs I meant the extreme silliness they projected through the main character who is supposed to be a scientist on a quest to save humanity, The exaggeration is cringey.
Sure Contact had some unscientific stuff in it, but man that movie at least triggered some wonder inside of you, and for sure showcased humans as being humans and not silly comedy actors. Ken in space :D
So yah idk in my view this movie was a total disaster and solidified my stance against movies in general.
ow yes, the core !
The headphones are a perfect example : you know it's complete bullshit, still you would love it to be true, and the scene where she hears the sound is so working.
If the scene was picturing a Jodie Foster inverting a matrix to calibrate the instrument sensitivity, that definitely wouldn't be the same (I mean I would shiver but I'm a matrix fetichist)

Intentional Obsolescence - devices are bricked by software
This is a Samsung tablet SM-T550 from 2016. Because Google and Samsung do not update these devices they are useless. You can't install any app almost, and not even browse the Internet. They are making them totally useless. Luckily I managed to install eOS with Android 13 and bring this tablet back to life.Welcome to our trade based society where all humans care is profit....

34€ tablet, made brand new with eOS
The story goes like this: we needed a tablet for Sasha to use for a month. She goes to Iceland for 2 months. First month she will do this workaway so she will stay with a family there and help out, so she needed a device that she can use at times to watch videos, browse the web, write, etc.. Because the phones are ridiculously small for most such tasks. She won’t take the laptop since it is too big and expensive and she will hike the month after the stay, so imagine having to hike with your laptop.
Now the tablet would serve her well even for the hiking month since she can use it to read books (offline as pdf, epud, etc.), but also as a second device for navigation (offline maps) in case her phone dies.
A tablet that is! One that we can sell or give away when she comes back!
We found a Samsung Tablet SM-T550 from 2016 or so. 34€ second hand with case and keyboard. Perfect! We grabbed it.
Now see the video for more info:
Ok, so how did I do it?
Took around 2 days.First of all, this ONLY works for this specific tablet, but the approach is similar for other tablets.
Our tablet: SM-T550 gt510wifi.
You need to download these files. I will reference them in this tutorial.
1. Erase the SHIT
You need Windows. I installed it in Gnome Boxes (I use TROMjaro Linux). This is going to take time and it is annoying. I forgot how much of a piece of shit Windows is. But well.
In Gnome Boxes you can select Preferences and enable external USB devices to be recognized in Windows. Like:
I’ve put all files on a USB stick from Linux, then had them accessible in Windows via the Gnome Boxes. Now install the Samsung Drivers in Windows (SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe).
Prepare the Tablet.
Do a factory reset. Then enable the Developer Mode. If you do not know how to do these maybe do not move forward because you will break the tablet.Make sure the USB Debugging is set in Download/Media file mode.
You can watch how this guy does that:
youtube.com/watch?v=w3Sh4Zti-f…
You then need to put your tablet into Download Mode. See min 3 of that video how to do it.
Connect it now to your computer. In Gnome Boxes allow it to be shared with Windows like I said above.
Let’s Wipe!
Next extract Odin3-v3.14.1.zip. Then open Odin3-v3.14.1.exe. Click ok.It looks like this:
See if it detects your tablet. Then click AP. Select the file twrp-3.6.2_9-0-gt510wifi.img.tar. Before you click START, go to options and uncheck AutoReboot:
Click Start. Like the guy from the video does. Now you have installed the WIPER!
Tricky part comes next.
You need to reboot the device into recovery mode. On the model I have I had to press the Power and Volume Down (or could be UP) until the screen turned back then immediately press the Power + Volume Down + Home button and keep press till it boots into the WIPER which looks like this:
Took me many attempts to make this work. If it boots normally you have to start the process again and put the tablet in Download Mode, open Odin and so on….Now to Wipe it properly just watch the same video to see how the guy wipes it clean and follow exactly.
2. Install eOS
If you managed to do all of this congratulations all of the hard part is done. I recommend putting the e-3.2-t-20251106-UNOFFICIAL-gt510wifi.zip file on a MicroSD card and insert into your tablet. Then select it for install. Again watch that video. That should be it.
I went with eOS instead of Lineage just because…I like that they keep it simple and you do not need to do much after the install.
Anyway took me a long time to figure what files I needed for the job.
I hope this post can help others too…
Unbelievable that you have to do this….but is not people’s fault. Not even Google or Samsung. It is out trade-based society that is at fault here.

Many humans, all obey

Hey Hey Hey:)
This society is still primitive since it relies on everyone to trade, be a worker. Else you are fucked. There should be no celebrations about that. This trade based society has to go. Makes no sense anymore and transforms us into mindless robots.
And now from the window of a four-wheeled cab the Queen of Babylon beheld the wonders of London. Buckingham Palace she thought uninteresting; Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament little better. But she liked the Tower, and the River, and the ships filled her with wonder and delight.
“But how badly you keep your slaves. How wretched and poor and neglected they seem,” she said, as the cab rattled along the Mile End Road.
“They aren’t slaves; they’re working-people,” said Jane.
“Of course they’re working. That’s what slaves are. Don’t you tell me. Do you suppose I don’t know a slave’s face when I see it? Why don’t their masters see that they’re better fed and better clothed? Tell me in three words.”

Let's not. Kids are people, not property to be muted at a whim. If they have something to say, the government has no business stopping them from saying it in the place where the general public will hear them, and in 2026 that place is social media.
Frankly I'm shocked at how quickly freedom of speech flies out the window. When I was in school, I was taught that freedom of speech is sacred and our ancestors died for it! Am I the only one who took it to heart?
And what would you sacrifice it for? The convenience of not having to set up parental controls on the devices you give your children? That hardly justifies the burden you'd impose on everyone else.
Are you perhaps worried that your kids will find some other adult who will give them another, unlocked device and social media account to use? Because even with age verification they can still do that!
@argv_minus_one @oberstenzian
When I was a teenager, I learned to make decisions about my own behavior. Yes, I did things that my parents disapproved of. We kept talking, and got through it with growth for us all.
With my own son, my wife taught me that the important part was to maintain communication. That means listening as well as speaking. Forbidding behavior shuts down that communication.
Talk of what you want, not what you don’t want.
This! Kids aren't stupid. They can be reasoned with. In fact they *must* be reasoned with; they don't learn anything from unexplained commandments.
And does anyone else remember their own childhood? Sometimes I was rash and arrogant, sure, but I wasn't dumb, and neither were my fellow kids. We figured out for ourselves how to stay safe online.
Now I'm supposed to believe that kids these days aren't born with brains? Baloney. Of course they are.
@argv_minus_one I use parental controls. I’ll gladly accept more parental controls.
I’m opposed to any forms of age check bs. Especially the methods being rolled out currently.
I think commercial social media entities should be held criminally liable for allowing children on their platforms. And any sleazy ID or age check racket should be forbidden.
They’ll have to come up with a better way to prevent liability. *Like going out of business.*
@argv_minus_one My ancestors didn’t die for freedom of speech. They died to escape slsvery. And the enslavers were demanding freedom of speech for their fellow landowners, not the folks that tilled the soil.
Nationalist myths aren’t a starting point for this. But I get what you mean.
I don’t think social media as we know it was designed for freedom of speech. It can allow for it… but that’s the problem. The *allow* part.
Even better:
banning #bigtechs from owning social media.
Social media developed by bigtechs is the real problem.
Sensitive content
Billionaires destroy humanity.
Save the children from them.

I don't think that's how @peertube works. Remote videos are discoverable by searching on a PT service, but it's the viewer that's seeding them by watching (because WebTorrent), not the PT service providing the search results.
You're right that copyright lawyers and often judges haven't cared much about such nuances though, or we would have won the CopyWars.

As other have said (and may yet say) IANAL
*That said* there is a vast difference between "hosted on" and "served from"
Your instance may *not* be the sole source for that content, but if a video consumer *gets* it though you, guess what?
It doesn't matter what "makes sense"
This is law, and lawyer-speak
Good luck with it

And you clearly don't understand the usage of the word "Federated"
Which is super common around here
Being federated makes *every* federated instance the [a] source
There is no one single point source -- the sources are all federated into multi-point "sources"

If a forum page embeds a YT video isn't it displaying just a link?
Anyway, if we become relevant they will drown us in lawsuits, not because their claims are reasonable but because we can't afford the lawyers to prove that.
That's how the justice system works.
I guess only #EFF could solve this by defending some cases to establish a rule of law.

As long as the video in question is not stored on your server and is just streamed from a different instance then that instance should be contacted for the removal - that's what any competent lawyer would do. But now what they've achieved is merely made us put up a curtain to hide the video from their view, a video that still exists on the original instance and free for anyone to watch.

You probably intended this as a nonchalant segue into your next point (I've done this). But FYI it comes across as quite patronising and out of context. @trom is hosting a PeerTube server. Chances are they have a pretty good understanding of the range of things "federated" can mean in this context.

You're not wrong that a lawyer might see a search result as a 'source' for copyright purposes. This is exactly what they've done with TPB et al. But ...
@FinchHaven
> federated makes *every* federated instance the [a] source
On Mastodon et al, yes. Because text posts are automatically delivered in full to everyone following the account that posted it. But PeerTube doesn't work that way, it just sends a title and a link to followers (or the wasted storage and bandwidth would be extreme).

The contents of torrents tracked by a tracker never go even near the tracker. The tracker only helps leechers find seeders. But still, somehow, magically, the tracker owner is doing the copyright infringement.

Reponse was to reply to the email saying we are launching at you hete on the internet. Because Microsoft don't understand how the internet works, then a link to the discussion thread.

I'm guessing it was probably some conspiracy theorist nonsense about aliens, or else he wouldn't describe a documentary as garbage.
People watch documentaries to learn about something real and true, but if it's full of misinformation then it is not only a garbage film but also harmful to society.

We should keep this in mind. And hopefully find a way to avoid such threats somehow.
No one/admin can risk any lawsuit were the other side is something like A.
