These laptops are actually made out of plastic and that magnesium alloy is steamed on the chassis themselves. What!? I made sure I got it right so I asked them to confirm several times. And they did. At best their website is dishonest, at worst they want to trick you. Which one is it? You decide.
Now, because TUxedo and Slimbook provide laptops that are honestly almost, if not entirely, identical (just check all of their models - chassis, hardware, sizes, etc.) I asked the Slimbook people if theirs are also plastic with coated magnesium alloy. They confirmed at least 10 times I think, that this is not true. Theirs are purely metal: aluminium+magnesium alloy, as stated on their website.
I decided. Slimbook.
It arrived:
Took a while but it arrived. I live in Spain, they ship from Spain, 5 hours away from where I am. Ok. Anyway.
First impressions were that it does not feel like a sturdy laptop. I have 2 to compare it with. First is my plastic laptop. Slimbook feels sturdier than my laptop. Second is Sasha's laptop which is a 13inch fully aluminium laptop. Slimbook feels like plastic compared to that one. I can beat you with Sasha's laptop for sure, and I could even kill you with it, then I am quite sure it will probably still work. But I can't do that with Slimbook. Yes magnesium alloy is lighter than aluminium, but idk...it feels like a well built plastic laptop to me. Which is not a good thing for me since I want a very s sturdy one.
So, the way it is built, for me, is not what I was looking for. I am inclined to believe this is "a plastic laptop with magnesium alloy steamed onto it", like the Tuxedo folks were saying. Call me crazy but I won't be shocked if the Slimbook people willingly or not misinformed me about their build quality.
Funny that they have a sticker that says "Protected by Magnesium". Protected...hm....
I don't know but if I were to sell laptops that are fully metal built, I would advertise that like "Chassis made out of aluminium and magnesium alloy!". Again, maybe this is a conspiracy I am creating inside my head but things smell fishy to me.
The keyboard is a bit odd. Some key symbols are not centered yet others are...
Not something that bothers me too much, but still an odd thing to see.
The charged is a fat-charger for a slim-book :)
It is massive. That makes this laptop not very portable since the battery form my initial tests, is not great with that Nvidia card. Maybe lasts for 2-3h...maybe a bit more. Maybe it is normal for such a powerful machine.
The worst part: the screen colors are washed out. Look:
I do not care about little differences, but this is a massive difference. My old laptop has a more contrasty look, a lot more. Slimbook is super washed out. I tested on Sasha's laptop and her screen is almost identical with mine. So idk which screen looks more like most screens out there, but for sure I prefer my old laptop screen and Sasha's screen. If two screens from two different laptops look a lot better than the Slimbook's one, maybe it is the Slimbook that's not doing well.
And this is awful because I checked the documentary I just edited the colors for, and on my screen and Sasha's looks great, on Slimbook looks not that great....what is it happening? Maybe this model has a fucked-up screen!? IDK...but this is the worst thing for me, something that if not fixed I will return the laptop. I can maybe put up with the rest, but not with this for sure.
Speaking of screens. You know I've been saying that 2k 3k 4k screens are a BS marketing unless we talk about very large screens and content to match that screen. Well...Slimbook has a 16inch 3k screen. If I switch between 3k and fullhd I can't really tell any difference. Maybe my eyes are not the best, but I feel like this is just a BS marketing thing.
Now...the screen size is perfect for me. I love the 16:10 aspect ratio. I love how light it is. I like how it looks and I despise those many stickers. The webcam is decent, the speakers are great. I can't open it to look inside because they added a sticker to one of the screws to stop you from doing that and I am concerned I can't return it if I open it up. Speaking of that, the bottom part of the chassis feels like pure plastic to me. Quite flimsy even when it is attached to the laptop.
Overall this laptop is a monster in terms of hardware. That's fantastic. But the build quality, although not bad at all, is not at all a sturdy one in my view. I would feel concerned to carry this laptop around for long. The battery is not great at all and if you leave it on the bed for example, the laptop gets super hot super fast.
I will test it for longer but so far idk what to say....because on one hand I LOVE the screen size and the overall size and weight of the laptop. But at the gigantic price of 1750 Euros....(sure I got it 150 euros cheaper), but at that price you expect a fantastically well built laptop that will last you for a decade. At least that's how I think.
Maybe that's how laptops are built nowadays....light, seem fragile....maybe I will keep it eventually. But idk...if not I will return it and search for a new one next year after TROM II is done. I may be inclined to go for a good Thinkpad or older models that were better built.
Let's see if Slimbook will convince me to keep it....I kinda doubt....

I just want to share a small tip here. Speaking from experience, I can say that its a very bad idea to use your laptop on bed, I've seen a laptop literally turn itself off because of overheating. Most laptops have their vent holes on its bottom and you have to make sure they're not closed off, so a flat and sturdy surface is always preferred.
Sorry that the RSS and Twitter integrations have not worked for social.trom.tf for the past month or so....but the next Friendica release should help fix these. Hopefully something that will happen this month....

Am thinking to even "invest" a bit more into it and buy a 4TB m2 SSD and move my entire TROM II project to the laptop to get rid of all of those pesky external drives plus make it all much faster...will see....
I wish people would stop putting themselves and others in little tiny boxes like: white, black, american, european, male, trans, gay, straight, this or that. We are all humans and we are having very similar needs and facing very similar challenges.
We should act like a species. The human species. And these non-important labels should not even matter.
We should raise kids as HUMANS. Make them aware of the fascinating world we have discovered, or the problems we face in our society. Should be that simple and would cut off the nonsense debates about gender, sex, sexuality, identity, race or whatever other crap. No one should care what you fantasize about, what you fuck, how you dress, how you look and all that in the first place.

And even when you have a great healthcare insurance you still have to pay tons of money, even for going to the emergency room. And stories about how bad of a job doctors are doing there - of course, not all.
In any case, I am so grateful for the Spanish healthcare system where I am a patient. Not a client. I go there, they take care of me. Yes, sometimes it is slow and annoying because the GP does not give you enough attention at times, but hey it is entirely free (and side note: it is even slower I've heard in the USA....). Anyway, I feel safe and relaxed because of the healthcare system in Spain. So happy that I get access to this system. Everyone should have access to healthcare as trade-free. No need to give anything in return for that service. The fact that this is not the case, says a lot about our society.

I think I have finally achieved what I wanted with the coloring madness I tried to fix in regards to our TROM II interviews....I will probably make a post soonish about it all because it may be interesting to some. The entire next week I will have a sort of break, so I won't do much for TROM II or any of our projects. My laptop probably will arrive after this week anyway, and I will have to spend a few days migrating my stuff to it in case I decide to keep it. Hopefully no more "coloring" work....I just want to continue with the work on the documentary and finish the 3rd part either by the end of December (ideally) or mid-january,
Then I'll have January, February and March to finish the last part. And April to do a few improvements to the other parts, add some sources and make a trailer.

Reason?
I suspect a bunch of reasons such as the fact that nowadays people are blasted with all sorts of micropayments and donation schemes, subscriptions and the like. When I started this years ago, donating seemed like a noble thing to do to support a project. Nowadays donating means you get access to whatever shit the "sellers" provide. You don't "support", you want the perks and "early access" shit or whatever. The notion of "donating" has become almost meaningless and pointless.
Me and Sasha will try to make money ourselves and support these projects, so for now we are ok. But it is for sure a bit depressing to see that you provide tons of free stuff: from books and videos, to online services and so on; and despite thousands using these things, only a handful help you financially to sustain these projects.
Anyway, I am continuing the work and maybe through WebApe I can sustain it in the long run. Will see ;)
Especially now that a bunch of those providers do not accept new subscriptions. We too have a limited number of available subscriptions since we cannot scale up, but we could provide some 20-30 probably.
Let me tell you I am so sick of color-correcting....I hope tonight's render of the first part is the final one in terms of color correcting. I should really fucking stop. Hopefully tomorrow I can apply these changes to the second part and won't take me too long....this starts to bother me :D

When I was little I somehow opened up my TV's display settings and accidentally changed something, I think it was color saturation or brightness or something, I'm not sure. Anyway, now my TV looks kinda weird, it didn't look like how it used to be and I could tell the difference. I tried so hard to undo these changes and go back to the old look, but little me couldn't do it. But here's the interesting thing, after a couple of days I got used to the new look and it became the normal for me 😅
True I agree. Is just that my idea was to film us on a completely black background for consistency, and to do some editing stuff like adding things on that background when we talk. And the issue was that almost all of us are on light-ish backgrounds and different colors and such....I will make a post to showcase these days. I wanted to make it look ok, nothing crazy. And that management means server management not installing Mastodon or other such services, designing websites, providing support with them and so forth.

As said, I don't criticize you because of the fact you want to make money of it. It's about not transparent about how that figure is calculates. I also have VPS's at Contabo and that's why I immediately recognized the VPS SSD XL and I was surprised by that €150. And that's awful and great at the same time. We should not struggle to live in this world, but it is fantastic that you do free things. I've always done free things except WebApe that I started a year ago out of desperation because I was broke. Even now we live 2 people with some half the minimum wage in spain. It is fine for us we don't need expensive stuff.
Anyway, if you look at how much I charge I think it is way bellow what normally it is charged for hosting + webdesign + webmanagement.
have you considered including some form of help with moderation? There are sadly a lot of people already experiencing some pretty bad attacks on mastodon, and it'd be amazing for new instance admins to have a leg up on trying to manage things!
fair enough; I and a number of others who have been around the fediverse for a long time are worried that the existing tools and support aren't enough, and there are a number of conversations around making things better.
What would make it possible for you to ensure that the instances people host with you (and other providers, not trying to single you out, just hoping to learn!) are able to offer meaningful and sustainable moderation/trust and safety support?
Also, any number of threads from @tomcoates and @shengokai are, I think, important reading. As someone looking to host a bunch of instances, you're in a unique and enviable position to help the community get moderation right! 😊

For example writing books about the human behavior, presenting scientific articles, yet having my posts/videos taken down simply because I was mentioning sexuality and showcasing some naked bodies. That's one small example.

For example writing books about the human behavior, presenting scientific articles, yet having my posts/videos taken down simply because I was mentioning sexuality and showcasing some naked bodies. That's one small example.
And so I do not agree that one or a handful of people should decide what the rest are allowed to post online. I agree that if you make an instance about cats and some want to post about dogs, it is right to not accept that since you clearly said the instance is about cats. So people should decide about their own instances but never ban other instances at the instance level. If the cat people want to talk to the dog people, let them do.
Now I get that there is a lot of harmful content out there. The classic one is child porn. I agree it is inhumane to abuse humans, of all ages I would add. But I would say depictions of fame, fortune, advertising of any kind, depictions of guns or violent games, are also extremely harmful. And thus my point: who decides where to draw the line? It is complicated....
I run a Friendica instance and a Peertube one. Friendica for now is not moderated to see where it leads. So far no issues. Peertube I had to impose a thematic to get rid of idiots, and so far it works. If your videos are not about science/tech/education in English, they are removed.
Therefore after many long discussion about moderation on the fediverse I think the solutions are:
Enforce a thematic on your own instance but never block the federation with other instances so we don't break the fediverse.
Users should easily be able to block/mute other users, other instances, or posts based on keywords.
Control the comments on posts: the ability to only allow friends to comment on your posts for example, or not accept comments.
Enable optional block lists similar to adblock lists. These lists can be communally created and maintained. Want to block the nazis? Enable the nazi block list!
Learn to relax a bit. Yes there are many idiots out there but at the end of the day they are a mere bunch of words on a screen. I got cursed and all that, so many times over the years, and almost all of the time I kept being calm and nice. I was surprised how annihilating that was for the trolls, almost like unable to touch me, and how relaxing it was for me. This is very important to keep in mind. Keep calm, it will help you take wiser decisions.
Admins should be able to not publicly showcase posts based on users, words, instances.

However when it comes to WebApe it is way beyond me what people do with the technical service I provide.
I ordered the TROM Laptop :D - finally. After weeks of research and days or discussions with the Slimbook and Tuxedo people I have decided to go for the Executive 16 Slimbook. Basically I wanted to buy a laptop around April next year after am done with TROM 2, but Slimbook had a 150 Euros discount so I said I might as well buy it now. I have a donation campaign for it where I explain it all.

I ordered the TROM Laptop :D - finally. After weeks of research and days or discussions with the Slimbook and Tuxedo people I have decided to go for the Executive 16 Slimbook. Basically I wanted to buy a laptop around April next year after am done with TROM 2, but Slimbook had a 150 Euros discount so I said I might as well buy it now. I have a donation campaign for it where I explain it all.

It has a 16'' screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. As tall as my 17.3'' laptop and only a bit less wide. Speaking of the screen seems like a great one, and almost no bezels.
Thus it is smaller in size than a normal 15'' laptop.
It is light and thin. Just 1.5kg light and 2cm max thin when closed. That's very portable.
Good selection of ports. All I need!
The power of it! The i7-12700H has 14 cores and 20 threads. My current one has 4 cores and 8 threads. Big difference. This laptop also has an NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti 4GB DDR6 - yes I do not game at all, but I do a lot of video editing and other tasks like live-streaming for TROMcast that could take a great deal of advantage of this nvidia GPU. All in all this laptop is a beast. Hardware wise should last me for at least a decade.
Slimbook is designed for Linux and the folks behind it seem to be very open-source driven. They are also super friendly. I talked to them over email almost daily for the past days. Funny enough they know about TROM and TROMjaro haha. And even consider adding TROMjaro as one of the OS selections when people buy a Slimbook.
They are from Spain, where I live, and I get 3 year warranty. Plus they have a bunch of spare parts on their website so I can repair mine in case I need to.
The laptop has 2 m2 slots and that's super useful since I need a lot of diskspace.
On paper all looks great. The battery probably is not going to be great (nvidia!) and the keyboard....I hate that numpad thing and I never use it. I feel like it is a waste of space....but well.
Let's see when it arrives how good it is. But yeah, I am happy I finally did this. My current laptop is some 6-7 years old and I think I can for sure keep a laptop for a decade if it is well built.

Am also very curious. I only had 2 laptops. First had a terrible screen, only HD and awful colors and viewing angles. All plastic. This laptop I have is fine, but plastic can't even open close the lid without sweating bullets because I may break it. :D

Does anyone know what the Tuxedo Computers means by their laptops like TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 16 - Gen7 being made out of plastic but having magnesium alloy steamed onto that? That's what they keep on telling me over email, while on their website it says:
Material: Display lid, top and bottom case made of magnesium alloy (AZ91D), Display frame made of plastic
I am curious....
Then I tell them that Slimbooks are made fully out of aluminium and magnesium alloys, as confirmed by Slimbook, and then they say: We looked at their website and indeed they are made out of "aluminium and magnesium " so they are not metal.
Whatt!?
Aren't aluminium and magnesium metals? What am I missing? So confused....
I am losing my mind with the color and luminosity/exposure correction for my recordings for TROM II....I sure did a lot of improvement but damn I start to hate it. It is because the recording is so bad and I am trying to fix it. I really hope to settle my mind on some solution tomorrow. This is too much already....
So 3 days ago I fractured my collarbone. I think so. That's what the doctor said today. I have a lot of pain in my right arm and the joint of the collarbone with the rib bone (however you call that) is swollen. The pain is 9 out of 10. But it is a 1-2 out of 10 when I sit at the computer, which is helpful. My arm cannot move that much. I was given painkillers and they sent me for an x-ray. On 12th of december hahaha. Ok....well....let's do an X-Ray in a month and see what's going on. Thanks Spain! I sure appreciate the free healthcare tho. So that's ok.
But I am continuing my TROM II work. I amazed by how much @Roma helped me with this laptop donation campaign....wow can't believe I can finally start to move my old and slow stuff to 1 single device.... I will review the laptop when it arrives and I may have another great news in regards with this laptop and the people behind it, something that has to do with TROMjaro ;) .... let's see...

Well you won't believe this but I have this habit to at times hide from people....and scare them....haha. I was hiding from Sasha in the closet in our room, up somewhere. She then came, I scared her, but I also hit my collarbone in some sharp edge in the closet. FUN! haha
Explain that to the doctor!

Yeah.. I was running down a hill in countryside and slipped on the wet grass or something and hit a stone with my shoulder.. I still remember that crackin sound in my ears haha.. But yeah, luckily it was just a fracture.
Don't take it as you definitely got the same thing now or something but I had to wear this hard bandage which fixates an entire arm to your body, so you can't move it and the collarbone has no movement.. and it was for a month. Not super comfortable I must say. And then I had to recover arm muscles for a couple of months bcs they got weak after wearing this thing all the time.

So these days I was talking to the Tuxedo folks to ask details about the build quality of their laptops and I am quite surprised. Not a positive surprise.
Basically I thought that laptops made out of aluminium and magnesium alloys are....metals....however they told me that their magnesium alloy laptops are basically magnesium alloy steamed onto plastic....so they are plastic!? They said they do not have metal built laptops...how odd.
The people from slimbook.es/en/store/slimbook-… that have laptops which are almost identical to Tuxedo's said theirs are fully metal except the tiny display frame made out of plastic.
@Nick @ The Linux Experiment you reviewed these laptops a lot, what do you think? I got the impression from your videos, and others, that these laptops are metal-built and not plastic...
Tuxedo and Slimboo use the same chassis for most of their models, and they’re almost all magnesium alloy. While I don’t know the chemical process used, they don’t feel like plastic, and they’re definitely sturdier than plastic. My slimbook pro x 14 was carried around eve where for almost 2 years, and it has one visible scratch, the palm rests are intact, it’s super solid. It’s not aluminium, but it’s not far behind!
hm...yeah that's what I got from your videos too. Do you also have a fully aluminium laptop and if so how do they compare? Interestingly they recommended me the TUXEDO InfinityBook S 15 - Gen7 as their best built laptop, which is half plastic. So if they consider that a better built than the almost-fully magnesium alloy builds, it is a bit confusing to me.
I used a few, a Mac a while ago, and a Starlabs laptop. Aluminum feels denser, heavier, and probably a bit more scratch resistant, but it’s also way more prone to fingerprints, and honestly, over a few years, I wouldn’t say the magnesium laptops felt any less solid.

I just want to share a small tip here. Speaking from experience, I can say that its a very bad idea to use your laptop on bed, I've seen a laptop literally turn itself off because of overheating. Most laptops have their vent holes on its bottom and you have to make sure they're not closed off, so a flat and sturdy surface is always preferred.
