We now have our own instance of Yacy. Yacy is a proper peer to peer search engine. You see, there are only a few search engines out there, maybe less than 10, and google dominates them all. Only google, microsoft, and a few others, can crawl the internet and provide relevant search results. They are giants and have big and fluffy servers.
We already provide a trade-free search engine at https://search.trom.tf - what this does is to use google and the like, to search whatever you want, and remove the trackers and ads, so you can see the results in a trade-free manner. But of course we rely 100% on other search engines. Not anymore!
With Yacy our server does its own indexing. It searchers on websites by itself. Thus decoupling it from any other search engine. It communicates with other Yacy servers/peers so together we can build a huge and decentralized search engine. But Yacy on its own is still limited. There are trillions and trillions of webpages out there. Ours will be able to index millions. This is why we have integrated it with https://search.trom.tf. And so, now when you search on https://search.trom.tf you'll also get results from our own search engine, Yacy.
The great part about is is that we are prioritizing the indexing of relevant websites, from tromsite.com to videoneat.com or directory.trade-free.org, or sources from tromnews.com. So that the first results will be a LOT more relevant.

yesish, i think it's on top of the kindle software like an app. but the kindle needs to be on a specific firmware, jailbroken etc. it's a lot easier on a kobo, according to the docs at least

I heard about PocketBook Touch HD 3. At least there is no need to register anywhere and you also don't need to use the manufacturer's cloud connestion. But I don't know much more.
On my old Kobo Reader (Kobo is already better than Kindle, because it uses epub format, I was easily able to install FOSS software on top of the default Kobo system, such that I never saw it. I haven't tried on the current one, because I haven't been bothered as much by the Kobo system. It may have been koreader that I used - See libhunt.com/topic/kobo. For transfering books to the Kobo I use Calibre. Many books can be found on pirate bay. For living authors I usually buy in parallel a paper version of the book to give away to friends. I noticed that there was a lecture on foss ereaders now in the LibrePlanet conference - I will wait to see if they release the recording.

For existing users, if you're happy with your current setup, by all means, carry on! . Launchers are, by design, mutually exclusive: between fmon & KFMon, only the one installed last will be active, but where KSM is concerned, KSM will always take precedence, so this is NOT designed for KSM users. If you're curious as to what this actually does to original KOreader/Plato packages, the gory details are all here!
Now that this is out of the way, on to the good stuff!
As mentioned earlier, the installation instructions are dead simple:1. Choose what you want to install: KOReader, Plato, or both, and download the appropriate ZIP from the listing below. 2. Plug your Kobo eReader to your computer over USB. 3. Directly extract the ZIP archive you've just downloaded to the root directory of your device (i.e., not under any subdirectory). (That's the "one click" bit ;p) NOTE: Prefer the "Extract To" approach (and allow replacing existing content if it's asked of you) vs. manually copy/pasting or drag'n dropping bits of the ZIP content yourself, as preserving the integrity of the directory structure and its contents is of paramount importance! 4. The tampon earbuds that Apple somehow made popular. Easy to lose, really bad microphone quality, batteries that degrade over time, costly as fuck. Charge them!
And of course, the vertical idiots who film vertically.

I love different people and different cultures all over the world, but I hate politics, politicians, and patriotism. Politicians lie, cheat, and hurt people- all over the world. Politics and patriotism divide people.
Some people have been asking me, “as a ‘Russian’ and ‘American’”, what I think about the war in Ukraine.
I don’t have much to say other than it’s an atrocity. I think war, in general, is an atrocity.
War is the absolute most wasteful use of human lives and resources- ever. It shows that we, humans, are incapable of solving problems on a global scale. It shows that we resort to the most primitive measures: fighting. Exactly what we teach our children not to do.
So far, here are a few things that piss me off about this war:
• Thousands of humans have been killed. • Millions of humans have been displaced; their cities, homes, and lives have been ruined. • Bombs continue to be thrown in residential areas, even at hospitals, schools, theaters, airports, and places where civilians are seeking shelter. • As always, normal people that gain absolutely nothing from this power struggle are the ones who suffer the most. Those who gain anything (-if there is anything to gain from this) will hardly suffer at all. • Men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine- this should be as much a human rights violation as throwing bombs at civilians. No one should ever be forced to risk their own lives to fight for this or that nation. If they choose to fight, fine. If not, let them leave. • Speaking of that, in Russia, 18-year-old boys are forced to serve in the army- forced against their own will. And now they are forced to kill and die for some douchebag politicians. • People in Russia are getting arrested for protesting against the war. • People in Russia are getting arrested just for saying “war” or for holding a blank sign that says nothing. • Russia does not even call this a war, but a “special military intervention” and its media shows no pictures of the reality of this war, almost nothing about the millions of refugees that have fled Ukraine, and almost nothing about the death and destruction they’ve caused. Russian media and schools have been banned from referring to the war as an “invasion”, “attack”, or “war” and those who spread “fake news” about the war can get up to 15 years in prison. • People in Russia are fleeing because they are scared of their own government. • People in Ukraine are terrified because they are getting bombed. • Poor people around the world will suffer because of this war. Many developing countries depend on Russia and Ukraine for wheat imports (among other imports). Rising prices of food, fuel, and fertilizer can devastate countries that are already struggling.
This is the reality of war. It is barbaric and inhumane. It is the most inefficient and stupid way to solve problems. No sane ordinary humans want war. Not Ukrainians, nor the Russians. The only people that ever benefit from wars are the few rich and powerful motherfuckers at the top. And that’s what ordinary people die for.
To me, that is a sure sign of a flawed system.
War, I’d say, is a consequence of the structure of our society. Billions of humans are divided into many different tribes and are taught that they are different from one another; some tribes are friends, some are enemies. They are also taught that they should aim to get more and more- more stuff, more money, more power. This trade-based society gives a handful of powerful people the means to do that. They gain more and more wealth and power, then they exploit this power, using ordinary people as pawns to get what they want.
This trade-based society also pushes people to create and sell more weapons, rather than to look for a peaceful solution to problem solving. As a species, we should be ashamed that we have enough nuclear weapons to bring our own selves to extinction. What an idiocracy…
If we ever want a peaceful, intelligent society, we have to see ourselves as one human species. We have to organize ourselves in a way that puts humans (all humans) and the environment first. Not profit, not selling weapons, not taking territories, not trading this for that, not gaining power.
I know that we’ll probably never get there, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about it.

Nah it doesn't make any sense. The recording is still barely usable on any screen. I do get that people are soaked into the vertical world, but it is objectively true that vertical videos capture a tiny part of whatever they try to capture, making any video hard to watch on any screen. I don't see how seeing the above video on a mobile phone improves the fact that you can't even see a full tank at once, let alone a convoy...
As I see it - it is just more convenient for people to take videos this way and sometimes it is more convenient to watch. If it really really sucked no one would do it :) E.g. here the operator is walking in mud, perhaps not feeling too comfortable or even safe so they probably hold their phone in one hand and don't look too closely at the screen.
Aesthetically horizontal aspect ratio is better of course and more universal in general but for quick documentary purposes this is fine too. When shooting something massive at close range it sometimes even offers advantage of better horizontal panning.
Anyway I just set a shortcut on my laptop to rotate the screen and I hope one day we will get square or round sensors allowing not to think about aspect ratio at all :)
Pretty much all videos nowadays are vertical, be it people filming in war, or insider their house. They do it because they follow the crowd and all use phones. I get that. It is a habbit pushed by the new-era of dumbphones. I get it seems more handy to hold the phone vertically while filming. That being said, vertical videos show a lot less in most cases, than horizontal ones. Regardless of the screen orientation and size. :P
I think platforms like tiktok is what made vertical videos popular. Also the phone should automatically rotate when playing landscape videos, but most apps don't do this. I'm glad that #peertube implemented this feature in their last release.
As for which one is better, it depends on the thing being recorded. If you're shooting a horizontal object like a car or a scenery, then landscape is better. If you're shooting more vertical objects like maybe a standing person or a tall building, then vertical video is fine. Vertical videos generally look awful when you watch it on a TV or PC screen, you can rotate the mobile but you can't rotate your TV, lol. Also it makes me think, why doesn't people make vertical TVs ? Maybe its true that our eyes are better suited for landscape viewing.
Look if all you want is to film a face or a person doing something, sure, we should not kill of all those who do that. Agree. But in most cases videos are encompassing a scenery, more than a vertical thing. As for vertical TVs oh my god....I feel like puking even thinking about it. haha
Vertical videos are a result of today's consumerism, phone-based, no shit given society. Sheep following mentality. It is a package of "coolness" and that's what makes me puky about it. 7 cameras, 8k videos, vertical nonsense, infinite scroll, tiktok, locked-in device, the cool generation of retardation. I had a similar reaction thinking about that, haha. And that's what made me think maybe you have a point, maybe landscape videos are in fact better.
But I still don't agree with your idea of mobile=consumerism. You don't use mobile that much because you work from home, if you travel around more you would see why its useful. I agree that that there is a lot of consumerism surrounding mobile phones, but it doesn't mean that everyone using a mobile phone uses it for simply consuming. If you don't use stuff like tiktok, then that itself would greatly reduce your amount of consumption. One could say the same about PCs that they're mostly made for gaming these days, but it doesn't account for all users.
I'd say, looking at stats, that most people use phones to consume. I've looked at that for the last book I wrote. I am sure the situation is the same today, if not more so. Yes computers too, I agree, are mostly used to consume. But my point with phones is that they are a LOT more geared towards consumerism than laptops. On a phone you can't do as much as you can on a computer. They are too small for any sort of serious work. Plus the "app" environment where you are locked in. Even blocking ads on a phone is a challenge.
Sure, phones can be useful, but am talking about the fact that they are mostly used for idiotic reasons. And vertical filming is on that side of things. They film like that simply because they only care to consume content on such a narrow screen and don't even tilt their phones while recording - habbit. Sheep. 100 do it, all do it. God bless.
