Youtube is doing its best and most aggressive lately to protect their ad platform. Third party services that allow you to watch youtube videos without ads or being tracked are suffering. Invidious, Newpipe, Freetube and the like.

Now Peertube is being affected and users cannot synchronize their youtube account with their peertube one. Basically a peertube instance has an IP, and google sees that this IP is trying to grab videos from their ad platform. So they blacklist the IP. Unfortunately we can't do much.

Nothing will change until we are brave enough to move to peertube entirely or similar platforms.

Therefore our videos.trom.tf/ is currently unable to import videos from youtube. And we may not be able to fix this.

Youtube is doing its best to not run a free video hosting service because video hosting is EXPENSIVE.

> Nothing will change until we are brave enough to move to peertube entirely or similar platforms.

Every time I use peertube I'm reminded why the existing solutions exist: video hosting is hard and expensive, and if you want it to work well you need a global CDN at a minimum. And your data needs to be hosted on mulitple continents so the backhaul to the origin isn't painful.

I tried to use the Peertube hosted by @jerry the other day and I took forever for a video to even start playing. I don't have a lot of confidence this is a problem we'll solve, at least not in a way that gives us an equal experience as we get when using the centralized platforms. Maybe in 10 years.

@feld strange. When I moved the videos to bunny.net about a year ago, it has always seemed lightning fast for me. @trom

That's why they make a lot of profit and the ones running youtube are rich. They do not run a "free" video platform. It is trade-based. You pay with your attention (ads), data, or for premium with currency.

We run an instance. videos.trom.tf/ 1,381 users, 2,622 videos, 972.2 GB. We pay some 20 euros a month. With p2p the bandwidth can be shared. Peertube runners allow you to use peopleś computers for transcoding. It is doable.

After many months we are bringing back our TROM.tf Search! search.trom.tf/ thanks to Danny!

But with a twist. Instead of hosting a SearX instance we are using a script that checks the best and most reliable instances and uses them randomly for every search. It is a meta-search engine. This way we make sure it is reliable and our IP will never get blocked by google and the rest.

For those who do not know, SearX is itself a sort of meta-search engine, pulling results from google, DDG, yahoo and more, removing the ads and trackers, and basically allowing you to search without those viruses.

So, we are finally back!

To add it to Firefox simply right click the URL after the page loads, and then add the TROM Search as a search engine. From Firefox's settings make sure you select it to be as default for your browser.

We have tested it on mobile/desktop with Firefox and other browsers based on it, and browsers based on chromium such as Cromite. All works fine.

@tio
Works very well, after allowing cross-domain XMLHttpRequests.

Thanks!

@Tio

The usual Manjaro Stable update plus we disabled one more of the Firefox’s terrible settings, one that allows advertisers to track you a little bit better.

Although not much since we are also severely underfunded, TROM is donating 10 Euros a month to Yunohost donate.yunohost.org/ and is encouraging you to do the same if you use Yunohost and can afford. Let's hope more people support these projects.

We now have 6 servers dedicated to transcoding/transcribing our Peertube videos videos.trom.tf - thanks to @Alexio who is providing 4 of them! Peertube is now a complete replacement for Youtube and I will make sure to push it a lot more in terms of use and promotion! We need to get people to use it, else without content, it won't go anywhere....

Feel free to use our instance!

Oh you should for sure post on our instance. The "thematic" we "impose" is to say that we pretty much accept those kind of videos, but the rest that do not fit, we are going to be more lose about and allow them. For sure your videos can be posted on our instance. So feel free to join!

For the past several months no one could install flatpaks from our Trade-Free TROMjaro app Library - tromjaro.com/apps/ - and now we finally fixed it thanks to @Rokosun ! One click installs :)

We have curated around 700 trade-free apps for the library and we plan to add a lot more the following months. Check it out!

Thanks for the replies. Tio - it's not a question of volume - I can hear what people say. For me it's sensory overload that comes from music in the background when people are talking. I can't speak for people who are hard of hearing or neurodivergent and how the volume impacts them.

@Tio

Hard to know how to deal with this. I tried to make the music not too loud but anyone can lower it down and put the captions....it is the best I could do.

Thank you Alfonso for becoming the 85th TROM supporter! We need 200 in total who can donate 5 Euros a month to support this project forever. See tromsite.com/donate/ #200fortrom

Thank you Juan for becoming our new supporter for 200 for TROM campaign! tromsite.com/donate/ - If this campaign reaches its goal then TROM will be sustainable, kinda forever. It will allow us to run the so many projects/services for a while, without stressing over the money situation.

Help if you can. Spread if you can. Thanks!

Everything we do is trade-free. So the only way to support TROM is through volunteer donations.

Hello people and many apologies but for the past few months Google (Gmail) has been blocking our verification emails for our Peertube instance videos.trom.tf and thus many users were unable to complete the registration. We were wondering why so many people register but do not confirm their registration.

Many apologies.

Now we have temporarily removed the email verification and we are trying to fix the issue with Google. You can register again, and as we always ask please respect the instance's thematic: videos in English and keep them scientific/educational/tech.

Cheers

Bringing extinct species alive - Hortobagy National Park - videos.trom.tf/w/hWHgC7izkZzmu…

Hortobagy National Park have some incredible rewilding and conservation projects. Like bringing extinct animals like Auroch, or extincted int the wild Przewalski's horses. It's unique place in Hungary and they are doing so much to restore and protect the nature.

The problem is that once a species has disappeared, it's gone forever - you can't bring it back, rewilding lobby or not!

What do yo mean you cannot bring a species back? Aren't there plenty of such examples?

Hortobagy National Park has many other conservation concerns to (try to) deal with

Can you give me more info about that?

Also I'll tag @Dima in case he wants to reply.

@Dima
in reply to Tio

@tio @sober_pirate I don't think we're talking about the same thing.
When a species becomes extinct, well, that's the end of it. It's too late.
When a population of a species has disappeared, it's possible to reintroduce it, using individuals from elsewhere, on the express condition that the causes of its local disappearance have been eliminated.
The Auroch is an extinct species, although we're tinkering with backwards selection
@Tio @Dima
in reply to bellule

I see what you mean. I am unsure how they define an extinct species here - maybe they mean a species is extinct from a particular environment, or all natural environments, but still exists in captivity. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinct_…

For sure I agree that if the causes of extinction are not dealt with, reintroducing it is probably not going to work.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurochs I see what you mean.

in reply to Tio

@tio @sober_pirate Aurochs is extinct species. I don't think anyone disputes that
Have a look to the "Breeding of aurochs-like cattle" in the Wikipedia article you send me
@Tio @Dima
in reply to bellule

Yes that's why I shared that wiki page. Maybe @Dima can have a look and change the description of the video to better reflect what these people are doing there. In the video you can see they say that they are not bringing back that extinct species videos.trom.tf/w/hWHgC7izkZzmu… but a breed.
@Dima
in reply to bellule

@tio @sober_pirate At Hortobagy NP, they're working on it, but there's still a lot of work to be done to restore water levels and circulation, in the fight against invasive species, in herd management and for example in the use of antiparasitic products, which are very harmful to the local entomofauna, etc....
@Tio @Dima

Just the usual Manjaro Stable updates plus a small fix. The application “System Information” changed its packaging name from hardinfo to hardinfo2. For the current users install the hardinfo2 from Add/Remove Software.
