We now have 6 servers dedicated to transcoding/transcribing our Peertube videos videos.trom.tf - thanks to @Alexio who is providing 4 of them! Peertube is now a complete replacement for Youtube and I will make sure to push it a lot more in terms of use and promotion! We need to get people to use it, else without content, it won't go anywhere....
I am unsure. We are using the default configs for Peertube. No custom profile added to the transcoding. Usually it converts a video in as much time as the video is. So 1h video transcode in 1h. But since multiple runners convert it, that means 2 resolutions in 1h plus auto-transcription. So you think we can get better results with a custom transcoding profile?
We are dedicating around 2 CPUs per runner/server.

I was thinking about this today after thinking "why don't I use PeerTube, I'm so against the commercial tube" and basically it's a few small/big things
1/ Slow interface 1a Interface as a whole slower (on older system at least) 1b Font seems to be trying something different -ends up displaying fuzzy or like too much sun is shining on it - perhaps it's trying a clearer/truetype style font or something newer to display text in different way than just standard text. Text should be the most solid thing even on earliest browsers - I can't read it so an attempt to have a clearer font (or whatever it is) shouldn't even be risked - keep it simple text!...
2/ Invidious filters YouTube really well - so ever since that came along and solidly filtered it's adverts, it's google code and allows download it like OK! - Still contact google video I see but it long solved the many offending parts
Overal these accumulative things and
2a YouTube has history / headstart on content and who uses it 2b even experts here don't use it or like me did but the instance went away twice / was more experimental more them 2c I hate the video system - it should be more like ftp/sft which Debian still uses - you can rename videos or files INSTANTLY - with peertube it's like editing another layer like a library record rather than file itself which I'd really recommend - connect with client, drap and drop videos done! Peertube is manual typing like library records - sucks, don't even need that meta and if you notice no many fill it in - name already people are meticulous about. 2d I remember bugs which maybe fixed but you can try uploading a video with a filename too long and it does all the work uploading but at the end say "filename too long" etc and that is crap / I wasted so much time 2e AND the error message comes up for 2 secs so if you're away you just come back to a screen where it's back to square one and didn't see the quick-flash error and have no idea... I did many files again not even realising an error message comes up for only 2 secs (please test and fix Alexio, you have the attention to detail I know). 2e Frama etc and producers we don't really hear from, so outreach to fans would be ideal - like to ask me to add music or remix or something (anything) else it does really well but not connected to anyone. The really good / professional movements get people involved with what THE PEOPLE love to do and well that's an investment (not many want to do) - give people what to do, add wish-list, add reasons to us why to use PeerTube, not just alternative if you have nothing else better to do... (kind of that is how it is now) Recruit us more and shout / scout us more!
SUMMARY I guess those are main reasons like a small survey fill in and why I haven't use it apart from twice maybe! Just now for the FreeSoft day. But you can ask more if you want...

Peertube is actually extremely fast am not sure why you may experience slowness. It is many times faster than youtube in terms of loading the interface (website itself). I also cannot see any issues with the font...
The way Peertube renames videos I think is all fine and probably necessary. Why would you need to upload the videos via ftp? That's old, insecure, nonreliable. Upload them via the Pertube interface and let Peertube convert the videos, create thumbnails, even transcriptions. Works wonders.
Framasoft posts regular updates. Follow them on Fedi or follow their News joinpeertube.org/news - I think they do great in terms of communication. They also have a wish-list where people can submit ideas and some already got implemented.

Almost like #blockchain or #bitcoin the minting or re-processing a of what is already is a video file and redoing each video to get it onto a system is pretty fucking crazy! Ok makes it uniform and super-fast but you kill the video dude! I can see some checks etc might needed but with original files but just leave as it with most browser playing it all. At some point these files probably disappears so saving these proves saves the ditching and disposal phase (I did about 30 files and my instance went for example - so glad I didn't do more - could see it all coming - ditched) and also moves etc. And energy goes with it! I think re-doing things is little gain unless for really specific projects or uses. Not the every day trashy video or re-up of the same thing. Copy would save that and allow people while saving streaming altogether perhaps even limiting things.
For my uses and this whole text is about these streaming features that are tied to consumption of planet and so consciously reducing = less damage and less asking people connected to the damage [ Google / YouTube ] is do the damage for us. we need not copy for all vids either, and stream even less).
And so a native protocol works better for all that because it's where we came from and it worked until expectation and hardware skyrocket it up at the expense of it's fuel combustion. The ecological consideration *storing* and having *a variety of formats* too I think is the right balance and access type. This can include all the files I have about a film in original downloaded copy + text, various sub's, thumbs, notes, edits, etc - which are super interesting adn exactly like a person would have on their own hard disk and want to copy for you / give others as basic list interface + download link represented as the filename to itself to click - I mean how frigging effective is that! List of filenames as the link! link text, simple tree, directories wow! :)
Streaming overall I'd say is ecologically unfriendly and a bloat type of invention... ...taking advantage of the invisible packets / hardware and tech constantly being upgraded I'm sure behind our backs at googleplexes or from china hardware which can all have it's specific uses in the end but the ways it's born and run, and then en-masse given to lesser-skilled people for almost common-reckless use has reduced it's effectivity for so many videos and pressed the gas more unnecessarily on the Earth. Samples and previews for the way or streaming 5mins to check parts of it only.
?? Computers non-stop is also a bit sick (imagine having it on a home, ok you do but hopefully that's because you are serving others, else does everyone not switch off at night???). Like that in itself is a bit excess / inconsiderate / reckless to have it on always.
Meanwhile storage is still doable and more careful for downloading / put limits on users storage also or encouraging rewatching things. My friends and I'm sure others just stream the same audio tracks over and over and really is such a waste. Video's as music and more is probably the same.
So I think reverting back is inevitable as constantly 'upgrades' is already crazy sterioded how much traffic moves for arguably entertainment when we could adjust that to education or better uses... so to undo this somewhat by taking stream away or limiting it undoes the damage created by the fast-food American #BigTech that has basically done it for us as an install and allowed existence of streaming to do as fast food - so this is the conscious choice to eat less or eat differently, which is what many people look for as #climatechange or whatever and "being the change" - basically means de-installing / downgrades / taking off features as direct account for what demands and eats more.

So just leaving video files "as is" and means it will almost surely play in browser or media player the same way!
And at some point we can consider these files probably disappears (instances run out of money, move domains, remove users etc() so it proves worthy not to invest so much energy into the eventual ditching / purging of files. To make processes and energy less disposable.
I remember on PeerTube did about 30 files (1 by 1, added text carefully and everything) and my instance went - I was glad I didn't do any more there - too much investment for little gain - and a text file would have been better so I could re-use it in future for uploading again somewhere else,. So now we can see it all coming (if we didn't know before how disposable online is) and also naturally life of users / projects going and coming like short-lived websites.
So the energy goes with it is pretty bad re-doing things for little gain unless for really specific projects or uses needing a new file + processing per file. If we had to pay personally for this we would not want to setup another system just to re-code existing mostl-disposable or video found on YouTube (as our backup let's say).
The every day trashy video or re-up of the same thing is just not worth throwing money / time into.
Copying video would save that and allow people to get file, while saving the whole streaming things altogether perhaps have a limited service.
For my uses and sentiments of energy investment means these streaming features are directly tied to consumption of the planet by reprocessing existing things on the planet! And so consciously reducing = less damage and less asking people to be connected to the damage [ less Amazon AWS and Cloudflare space all of which are getting more evil or bigger throwing moeny at it] We need to stream even less than have copies.

And so a native protocol works better for all that because it's where we (and all servers) came from and have as base layer. FTP worked before, until expectations and hardware skyrocketed up expectations and expense - like petrol / fuel combustion - kind of more demanding consumption / processing for the same files!
STORING VARIOUS FORMATS WITH FILMS Storing other formats with video file I think is also the right balance. The text file you can read instantly in browser as a readme type file + see the other files I have about a film in *original downloaded copy*. I know stream has it's uses but download and play might be actually faster sometimes too! So it's like paying for convenience again.
Adding the text, various sub's, thumbs, notes, edits, etc - are super interesting and exactly like a person would have on their own hard disk already and want to copy for you / give others. Drag and drop - get asic list interface + download link as the filename - I mean how frigging effective is that to auto-list and auto-link it all INSTANTLY after upload! List of filenames... Simple directories... view various files in browser... wow! :)
STREAMING NO MORE - AS CONSCIOUS THING? "Original video file preserved" is good but could be playable directly.
I understand stream makes smaller versions of file, faster to play sometimes, but also many copies of the same per file, is a big trade off (negative maybe overall) and displacement of space / out-sourcing of energy to stream etc etc - a nice try but can't hide the bloat... so again I favour live stream for events mostly.
Overall a "Big or Small" stored download for people to play locally. The rest is Americanised bloat - and I mean SUV style bloat to what other vehicle consumption are - so bigger but only marginally better only in some situations to what we had as data store.
Data stores that did the job universally (1 copy per file without all this transcoding 🔁 and disposable streams 🗑️ lol

Videos I'd create and upload: - travels and adventures of my wife and me, to link to from my Friendica account - talks on environmental topics given by experts (not by me) - if friends need help with Friendica, I might upload a video showing how to get something done
I understand and agree with the need to prevent conspiracy theories from having a platform. Nombreux et nombreuses sont les personnes impliquées dans ce numéro spécial, qui n’est pas un hommage ni lefruit d’un culte de la personnalité ou d’une quelconque idolâtrie ! C’est un numéro pluraliste, à l’image des Sud, dans lequel s’y croise plus de noms, de photos de militantes et de militants qu’à l’accoutumée. En résumé, c’est un volume foisonnant qu’offre là Les Utopiques, qui se veut l’expression de cette citation. « Mais l’outil commun, Solidaires, n’est propriété de personne, il nous appartient à tous et toutes, celles et ceux qui l’ont fait vivre, le faisons vivre, le ferons vivre ; vivre et évoluer en fonction d’une perspective, celle de l’émancipation sociale. Le syndicat est à chacune et chacun d’entre nous, mais n’existe et n’est utile que sous sa forme collective. » Souhaitons encore de nombreux printemps à cette revue et à cet esprit solidaire. On associe souvent les 25 ans à l’âge de raison, n’omettons pas la déraison.

La récente dissolution de l’assemblée nationale après les élections européennes a mis en évidence le fait qu’un système politique peut être profondément anti-démocratique tout en reposant sur un système de suffrage universel. Tout d’abord, l’absence de délai raisonnable entre l’annonce des élections législatives et leur tenue a rendue impossible toute campagne pour les partis : ces derniers n’ont pas eu le temps nécessaire pour former ou réactiver leur base militante, adapter leurs supports de communication ou faire connaître leurs candidat·es en les associant à des éléments forts de leurs programmes.
Un cadre qui favorise l’extrême droite
Ce délai très court a donc créé, de fait, une rupture entre les catégories sociales disposant du temps et des outils pour rechercher les informations liées aux programmes (qu’il s’agisse des projets des partis ou de la critique qui peut en être faite) et les autres. De même, les débats qui jalonnent une campagne demandent une préparation des candidat·es, qui doivent être formé·es à la présentation des idées ou aux discussions en opposition sur des points de programmes précis, et permettent normalement de faire connaître les lignes directrices des différents partis à l’ensemble des électeurs et électrices.
Le processus démocratique associé à l’élection doit donc laisser à ces derniers et dernières une période de réflexion et de discussion qui prend appui sur les débats publics, afin de construire une opinion avant le vote. En l’absence de discussion et d’espace de réflexion, les idéologies les plus répandues dans le contexte social bénéficient d’un avantage de fait dans le débat d’idées, puisque leur implantation leur donne une apparence de simplicité et de « bon sens ». Dans le contexte actuel de montée lente mais inexorable de l’extrême droite, les idées fascistes et réactionnaires bénéficient donc d’un avantage sur celles des mouvements de gauche, puisque ce sont elles qui sont les plus discutées au quotidien dans l’espace public.
Des logiques autoritaristes
Selon une analyse plus globale des systèmes électoraux, ils sont par essence vecteurs d’épuisement militant : les élections concentrent l’engagement sur des périodes très réduites, durant lesquelles l’investissement dans les tractages, recherches de signatures... deviennent le centre de la vie des militant·es, avant de cesser brutalement après l’élection. Ce surinvestissement sur des temps courts favorise des logiques d’implication à court terme, les militant·es étant, à l’issue de l’élection, souvent trop fatigué·es et parfois trop peu formé·es pour entamer un travail de fond le reste de l’année. Les mécaniques électorales favorisent donc un fonctionnement basé sur des engagements ponctuels, avec un début et une fin,qui ne permettent pas de s’engager efficacement pour la diffusion d’idées progressistes, condamnant la gauche à la réaction par rapport au travail de sape des droits organisé par les droites.
Ce processus est accentué par la constitution de collectifs qui, à l’image de LFI, ne se constituent pas en parti à proprement parler et négligent la formation de fond de leurs militant·es. L’investissement fort demandé au moment des élections favorise également un engagement émotionnel, souvent associé étroitement à la personnalité d’un·e candidat·e, qui amplifie la fatigue et entretient des logiques autoritaristes en faisant incarner un ensemble d’idées par une personnalité plutôt que par un groupe. Ce fonctionnement hiérarchisé entre des leaders et un collectif qui les soutient ne permet pas d’assurer un fonctionnement participatif au sein du parti lui-même. Les militant·es n’ont que peu d’influence sur les idées portées par le parti et sur ses lignes politiques, sauf à réussir à monter en hiérarchie, processus qui favorise les personnes les plus privilégiées dans la société (hommes blancs, cis, hétéros, valides).
Cet engagement quasi religieux a pu être retrouvé dans les appels au vote durant la campagne des législatives, au cours de laquelle toute analyse matérialiste de la situation a été rejetée en bloc au prétexte de l’urgence du moment. De même, la réaction de sidération collective à l’annonce des résultats du premier tour est symptomatique d’un manque d’engagement collectif à long terme. Les résultats de l’extrême droite sont équivalents à ceux obtenus lors des élections européennes et reflètent l’ambiance sociale réactionnaire des dernières années en France où les idées fascistes sont de plus en plus présentes depuis au moins les années 1980, soutenues par les gouvernements successifs justement pour servir un agenda électoral.
L’illusion d’un choix
Pour finir, le système électoral ne permet pas d’assurer une représentation des idées et ne constitue pas un mode d’expression pour la population votante, ce qu’il n’a par ailleurs pas vocation à faire. L’absence de comptabilisation des votes blancs, tout d’abord, rend toute une partie de l’opinion exprimée inaudible. Les élections n’ont donc pas pour fonction de représenter les idées des votant·es puisque seuls les soutiens exprimés en faveur d’un parti sont comptabilisés, d’autant que les votes exprimés en faveur d’un parti sont rarement des votes d’adhésion. L’absence d’infléchissement des lignes des partis par leur base ainsi que l’échec des initiatives d’assemblées citoyennes mises en place ces dernières années rend en effet l’expression directe de la population impossible dans ce cadre, d’autant plus dans un système français caractérisé par son centralisme et la concentration des pouvoirs. Le vote, présenté comme un moyen d’expression par les classes politiques et par une grande partie de la population au cours de la campagne de ces dernières législatives, est donc le plus souvent un choix par défaut, même en dehors des périodes d’union face à une menace fasciste.
En donnant l’illusion d’un choix, les élections visent par contre au maintien et à la stabilité du système en place en réduisant autant que possible l’écart entre les opinions dans la population et les gouvernements. Elles sont donc un outil de conservation d’un pouvoir en place, qui favorise par nature les idées réactionnaires, par lequel un changement radical de la société est impossible. Le système politique français doit être vu comme un outil de légitimation d’un pouvoir en place, y compris lorsqu’il est fasciste. Les votes récents pour l’extrême droite illustrent donc l’avancée des idées fascistes dans la société française et ce processus ne peut être stoppé par les urnes : les idées fascistes avancent sur le terrain et le vote peut permettre de repousser l’échéance de leur arrivée au pouvoir, mais reste sans effet sur leur diffusion. Cette dernière lutte ne peut se mener que par un investissement au long court dans le combat contre l’extrême droite.

Elections européennes : cinquante nuances de brun sur l'Europe
À l’heure d’écrire cet article, les effets des élections européennes sont encore incertains en France, où Macron a décidé de dérouler le tapis au Rassemblement national par la dissolution de l’Assemblée nationale. Mais si dans l’hexagone l’extrême droite a connu un bond électoral spectaculaire, ce scrutin a malheureusement été l’occasion de constater que la progression concerne toute l’Union européenne. Y a-t-il basculement du continent vers le brun ? Quelles conséquences possibles pour les travailleurs et travailleuses européennes ?

À l’heure d’écrire cet article, les effets des élections européennes sont encore incertains en France, où Macron a décidé de dérouler le tapis au Rassemblement national par la dissolution de l’Assemblée nationale. Mais si dans l’hexagone l’extrême droite a connu un bond électoral spectaculaire, ce scrutin a malheureusement été l’occasion de constater que la progression concerne toute l’Union européenne. Y a-t-il basculement du continent vers le brun ? Quelles conséquences possibles pour les travailleurs et travailleuses européennes ?
Rappelons déjà les fondamentaux : dans le fonctionnement de la mégastructure européenne, le Parlement européen qui vient de se renouveler a finalement des possibilités limitées. Certes, il vote les directives rédigées par les commissaires européens et le budget, qu’il peut amender, mais il partage ce vote avec le Conseil de l’Union européenne (l’ensemble des ministres des États membres par domaine), et il ne possède pas l’initiative législative. Il ne dicte pas non plus les orientations politiques de l’UE, prérogatives du Conseil européen (qui rassemble les chefs d’États ou de gouvernement de chaque État). Il ne gère pas la politique monétaire, prérogative de la Banque centrale européenne.
À bien y regarder, ce n’est pas là que le pouvoir réside vraiment ! De quoi relativiser d’emblée l’enjeu de ces élections ou leur réelle portée démocratique, et avec une participation à 51% pour l’ensemble de l’UE (ajoutée à des différences de scrutins entre États qui compliquent la lisibilité du scrutin), il semble bien que ce soit le désintérêt pour cette mise en scène qui ait guidé les classes populaires d’Europe.
Une extrême droite multiforme
Même en prenant en compte ces éléments, il n’en reste pas moins que 180 parlementaires de toute l’extrême droite européenne ont été élus le 9 juin dernier (sur 705 sièges). Dans la plupart des pays de l’UE, l’extrême droite a obtenu des postes, ce qui lui assure ressources et positions supplémentaires. Seuls trois pays, la Slovénie, l’Irlande et Malte, n’ont pas d’élus de ce bord. Cependant, cette progression est inégale selon l’endroit, et l’extrême droite ne présente pas un visage uniforme.
Il y a bien sûr, à l’instar du RN (30 élus), du FPÖ en Autriche (six élus) ou de Fratelli d’Italia en Italie (24 élus), les mouvements historiques de l’extrême droite européenne, qui sont les descendants des organisations directement créées par les partisans du fascisme après-guerre. Généralement ces partis ont tout fait pour gommer cette filiation et présenter une face « respectable ».
Aux côtés de ces formations anciennes, se retrouve aujourd’hui l’ensemble des partis portés par leur « euroscepticisme » et la préférence nationale qui ont pu se créer en surfant sur les déceptions de la politique européenne : c’est notamment le cas de l’AfD allemande (quinze élus), à l’origine un parti libéral et souverainiste, ou encore du Parti pour la liberté hollandais (huit élus), de Vox en Espagne (six élus), ou de Chega au Portugal (deux élus). D’autres encore ont une histoire hybride, comme La Lega italienne (huit élus), ou encore le Fidesz hongrois (onze élus) qui fut jusqu’à présent classé seulement à droite malgré la politique illibérale, nationaliste et autoritaire de son leader Viktor Orban.
Enfin de manière plus marginale se trouve des mouvements ouvertement fascistes comme Notre Patrie hongrois (un élu), Reppublikka en Slovaquie (deux élus), ultraconservateur comme Confédération en Pologne (six élus) ou encore le Mouvement démocrate Patriote grec (un élu), ultranationaliste comme les mouvements AUR et Renaissance en Roumanie et Bulgarie (respectivement six et trois sièges) ou plus atypique comme le mouvement « Il y a un tel peuple » bulgare (deux élus), ou « La fête est terminée » en Espagne (trois élus).
Les différences de formes et de positions n’ont d’ailleurs rien à voir avec les groupes dans lesquels siègent ces formations au Parlement européen : ainsi, le RN français, dans le groupe Identité et démocratie, se retrouvera au côté de La Lega italienne, là où Fratelli d’Italia, siégera avec Reconquête au sein des « Conservateurs et réformistes européens » – où se retrouve les partis les plus radicaux. Une partie des organisations, nouvellement élues, sont sans groupe ou n’ont pas encore choisi.
Le racisme et l’exclusion comme fond commun
Au-delà, ces distinctions n’ont pas vraiment d’importance en soi, les groupes ne reflétant pas non plus les positions prises. Car si les égoïsmes nationaux guident fondamentalement ces formations politiques ils les divisent aussi entre elle. Un autre sujet clivant au sein de l’extrême droite et qui en limite la cohésion est le soutien à l’Ukraine en guerre. Une partie importante de l’extrême droite se présente comme pro-russe (en Hongrie, Bulgarie, Roumanie...) là où une autre considère la Russie comme un ennemi héréditaire (dans les pays Baltes, en Pologne...).
Mais pour le reste, elles ont largement plus en commun : une vision réactionnaire et conservatrice de la place des femmes, réduite à la natalité, la répression des minorités sexuelles, la chasse aux immigré·es, l’anticommunisme et par extension la haine de la gauche, la mise en pièce des libertés individuelles.
Économiquement, même si quelques différences peuvent se sentir, elles sont à grande majorité libérales dans la droite lignée des politiques menées en Europe, contrairement à la démagogie qu’un parti comme le RN peut distiller en France. On ne peut que constater le cynisme de ces formations, qui, se nourrissant d’un ressentiment légitime envers la politique d’austérité et de casse des services publics européenne, en sont finalement l’un des plus grands soutiens. Enfin, elles ont en commun leur défense absolue du modèle économique productiviste et sont vent debout contre les mesures écologiques, même timides, proposées en Europe.
Une UE toujours plus conservatrice et antisociale
Finalement, si les divisions de l’extrême droite européenne vont limiter son pouvoir de nuisance, le poids qu’elle a acquis au travers du Parlement européen, doublé de sa présence ou participation au pouvoir dans six gouvernements européens (Italie, Finlande, Hongrie, Croatie, Slovaquie et Suède), en font un danger non négligeable, notamment dans les tractations menées pour nommer les commissaires européens, qui sont les véritables artisans exécutifs des orientations européennes, et où elle pourrait appuyer les personnalités les plus rétrogrades.
Mais au-delà des structures caractérisées comme telles, c’est bien la diffusion des idées de l’extrême droite dans les autres formations politiques et l’ensemble de la société européenne qui représente le principal défi aujourd’hui. À cela doit répondre chez les révolutionnaires une pratique internationaliste antifasciste forte, la construction de luttes sociales communes, un travail en commun plus fort entre nos organisations politiques et l’aspiration à un projet politique anticapitaliste, démocratique et égalitaire qui dépasserait les frontières.
