I know many hate the flatpaks and such, but for the past 2 weeks I got to see their advantage. Yes thety take up a lot of space, but when Blanket didn't work, I quickly searched for why is that and found out that an update to some packages (libraries) it depends on, was breaking the app. I use that app a lot to put some ambient noise when I sleep - helps me sleep well :). I use TROMjaro (Arch) so I get access to some newer packages/libraries. But well, one update to one library destroyed one app. I then decided to install the flatpak version of Blanket and all worked wonders.
I also use Shotwell as my Photo library. Indexes over 20k photos and 1k videos of mine. It does the best job out of all image gallery apps. My photos are a mess on my drive, in lots of folders with weird names. So I really need Shotwell to organize them by dates and such. Else I can't touch my photos/videos. But Shotwell stopped working days ago. Opened an issue with the devs and we realized is gstreamer (another package) that's at fault. What can I do about that? Complain to gstreamer....will take a wh

So my sleep and my photos/videos all work now thanks to flatpaks. They come with all of the dependencies bundled so you can be sure they work. Maybe this is the way forward....it sure is easy to install and update them (any mother can do it) + a lot more reliable...
So yah, I am glad TROMjaro comes with flatpak support out of the box. #tromlive
@Tio For me flatpak is more like a bandage than anything else, sure it might be helpful in situations like these, but its never a complete long term solution. All of these problems you described happened because of dependency errors, I usually downgrade that dependency to make things work until the devs figure it out and release a new update that works.
Instead of changing the program to work on the user's machine, flatpak changes the user's machine to make the program work ! This is what flatpak does in a nutshell. it sure makes things easy for the devs, but I think an optimal solution here would be to have a better system for detecting dependency errors and maybe provide an easy method for users to downgrade packages if something goes wrong.
Having an Nvidia card on Linux is almost exactly like not having it.
No hardware acceleration in the browser, not used in video editing except a little bit - extremely little bit. Or video conversion. I might as well use my GPU as a cup holder haha. And to try and make it work is either impossible or very difficult. That entirely defeats the Linux's awesome "works out of the box" approach. Not with Nvidia, not with my Nvidia. I got to accept over the years that my computer basically has no graphics card. 4GB of GPU RAM are just sitting there. God bless. If I ever have enough money to buy a new laptop I'll never ever ever buy one with Nvidia.
This is not the fault of Linux but Nvidia not providing proper drivers for Linux and keeping theirs proprietary.
What model of laptop do you have? I prefer to avoid Nvidia, but I usually don't get to choose because I get free cast-off stuff that would have otherwise been thrown away at work.
So I have a lot of Nvidia stuff, and have learned a few tricks to get them to work over the years.
With my laptops, the big trick is turning off the switching mode in the BIOS. I don't remember what the "switching" mode is called, but it's something that lets (Windows) switch between the high performance Nvidia GPU and the less power hungry Intel GPU on the fly. Basically, it's on by default and it makes GPU acceleration not work with Linux. But turning it off lets the appropriate Nvidia driver work fine.
In my case, the big "fun" comes from the fact that these junky laptops are often being junked at work simply because the screen is bad. But the computer still works fine with an external monitor. HOWEVER ... the BIOS settings only display on the built in display. So I have to see if I can figure out how to alter the required settings blind. I boot up two laptops of similar model ... one with a working display and one without ... press the same keys to get to the same menu setting in the BIOS ...
Funny enough I cannot find a decent photo album FOSS app.... Here are the things I need, and I think these should be default to any such app:
Ability to select what folder/path to be indexed by it and the ability to scan it so that it automatically adds new photos/videos.
Sort all videos and photos by date in one stream of photos. Don't make me click the year, then date, then day to see any photos....hear me GThumb?!
Let me double click any and view it then also able to edit any photo with basic tools: rotate, luminosity, etc..
That's all. Is it too much to ask?! :D. I tested so many and all have these features but separately...which is so weird. Shotwell, Pix, Kphotoalbum, and so many....none seem to be properly useful. What's happening!? The people who make these apps do not use them? :D
maybe try Simple Gallery? I don't know if it fits all your criteria, but I'm using it for quite some time now and it's just an all around awesome app for me.
It does sort pictures by date and it lets you choose which folders to scan, and does so automatically.

We are indexing a lot of websites for our Yacy decentralized search engine. A proper search engine that we integrated into our SearX instance at search.trom.tf. We want to make SearX a lot more relevant + add up to the decentralized search engine. We will index some 30-40GB of stuff, meaning a few million pages. We take the best sources from our own websites, tromnews, and the like. And test the search results and tweak them to make them better and better.
This is how I keep our servers/services in a good state, especially when it comes to trom.tf and its over 20 services:
I delay the updates that come from yunohost. Wait a few days before you update any app, just in case there is an issue with any update. Take a look at their github page to see if others complain :;)
Before I update any app or any package (system) I create a system snapshot. That means I can always restore even if I blow it all up.
Yunohost automatically creates a backup before updating any app. This is super handy.
I do daily backups to a remote server for all of our servers.
This way it is a lot less likely for me to break any website for long. I can pretty much always restore it. I learned from mistakes. Now I think our servers work quite well and are quite stable.

We now have our own instance of Yacy. Yacy is a proper peer to peer search engine. You see, there are only a few search engines out there, maybe less than 10, and google dominates them all. Only google, microsoft, and a few others, can crawl the internet and provide relevant search results. They are giants and have big and fluffy servers.
We already provide a trade-free search engine at https://search.trom.tf - what this does is to use google and the like, to search whatever you want, and remove the trackers and ads, so you can see the results in a trade-free manner. But of course we rely 100% on other search engines. Not anymore!
With Yacy our server does its own indexing. It searchers on websites by itself. Thus decoupling it from any other search engine. It communicates with other Yacy servers/peers so together we can build a huge and decentralized search engine. But Yacy on its own is still limited. There are trillions and trillions of webpages out there. Ours will be able to index millions. This is why we have integrated it with https://search.trom.tf. And so, now when you search on https://search.trom.tf you'll also get results from our own search engine, Yacy.
The great part about is is that we are prioritizing the indexing of relevant websites, from tromsite.com to videoneat.com or directory.trade-free.org, or sources from tromnews.com. So that the first results will be a LOT more relevant.

I heard about PocketBook Touch HD 3. At least there is no need to register anywhere and you also don't need to use the manufacturer's cloud connestion. But I don't know much more.
On my old Kobo Reader (Kobo is already better than Kindle, because it uses epub format, I was easily able to install FOSS software on top of the default Kobo system, such that I never saw it. I haven't tried on the current one, because I haven't been bothered as much by the Kobo system. It may have been koreader that I used - See libhunt.com/topic/kobo. For transfering books to the Kobo I use Calibre. Many books can be found on pirate bay. For living authors I usually buy in parallel a paper version of the book to give away to friends. I noticed that there was a lecture on foss ereaders now in the LibrePlanet conference - I will wait to see if they release the recording.

For existing users, if you're happy with your current setup, by all means, carry on! . Launchers are, by design, mutually exclusive: between fmon & KFMon, only the one installed last will be active, but where KSM is concerned, KSM will always take precedence, so this is NOT designed for KSM users. If you're curious as to what this actually does to original KOreader/Plato packages, the gory details are all here!
Now that this is out of the way, on to the good stuff!
As mentioned earlier, the installation instructions are dead simple:1. Choose what you want to install: KOReader, Plato, or both, and download the appropriate ZIP from the listing below. 2. I love different people and different cultures all over the world, but I hate politics, politicians, and patriotism. Politicians lie, cheat, and hurt people- all over the world. Politics and patriotism divide people.
Some people have been asking me, âas a âRussianâ and âAmericanââ, what I think about the war in Ukraine.
I donât have much to say other than itâs an atrocity. I think war, in general, is an atrocity.
War is the absolute most wasteful use of human lives and resources- ever. It shows that we, humans, are incapable of solving problems on a global scale. It shows that we resort to the most primitive measures: fighting. Exactly what we teach our children not to do.
So far, here are a few things that piss me off about this war:
⢠Thousands of humans have been killed. ⢠Millions of humans have been displaced; their cities, homes, and lives have been ruined. ⢠Bombs continue to be thrown in residential areas, even at hospitals, schools, theaters, airports, and places where civilians are seeking shelter. ⢠As always, normal people that gain absolutely nothing from this power struggle are the ones who suffer the most. Those who gain anything (-if there is anything to gain from this) will hardly suffer at all. ⢠Men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine- this should be as much a human rights violation as throwing bombs at civilians. No one should ever be forced to risk their own lives to fight for this or that nation. If they choose to fight, fine. If not, let them leave. ⢠Speaking of that, in Russia, 18-year-old boys are forced to serve in the army- forced against their own will. And now they are forced to kill and die for some douchebag politicians. ⢠People in Russia are getting arrested for protesting against the war. ⢠People in Russia are getting arrested just for saying âwarâ or for holding a blank sign that says nothing. ⢠Russia does not even call this a war, but a âspecial military interventionâ and its media shows no pictures of the reality of this war, almost nothing about the millions of refugees that have fled Ukraine, and almost nothing about the death and destruction theyâve caused. Russian media and schools have been banned from referring to the war as an âinvasionâ, âattackâ, or âwarâ and those who spread âfake newsâ about the war can get up to 15 years in prison. ⢠People in Russia are fleeing because they are scared of their own government. ⢠People in Ukraine are terrified because they are getting bombed. ⢠Poor people around the world will suffer because of this war. Many developing countries depend on Russia and Ukraine for wheat imports (among other imports). Rising prices of food, fuel, and fertilizer can devastate countries that are already struggling.
This is the reality of war. It is barbaric and inhumane. It is the most inefficient and stupid way to solve problems. No sane ordinary humans want war. Not Ukrainians, nor the Russians. The only people that ever benefit from wars are the few rich and powerful motherfuckers at the top. And thatâs what ordinary people die for.
To me, that is a sure sign of a flawed system.
War, Iâd say, is a consequence of the structure of our society. Billions of humans are divided into many different tribes and are taught that they are different from one another; some tribes are friends, some are enemies. They are also taught that they should aim to get more and more- more stuff, more money, more power. This trade-based society gives a handful of powerful people the means to do that. They gain more and more wealth and power, then they exploit this power, using ordinary people as pawns to get what they want.
This trade-based society also pushes people to create and sell more weapons, rather than to look for a peaceful solution to problem solving. As a species, we should be ashamed that we have enough nuclear weapons to bring our own selves to extinction. What an idiocracyâŚ
If we ever want a peaceful, intelligent society, we have to see ourselves as one human species. We have to organize ourselves in a way that puts humans (all humans) and the environment first. Not profit, not selling weapons, not taking territories, not trading this for that, not gaining power.
I know that weâll probably never get there, but that doesnât mean we shouldnât talk about it.
