How I cool down my laptop and why?

I bought a Dell Inspiron 7620 2-in-1 (mouthful) some 6-7 months ago. Took me many months to choose a laptop and this one was the best for me. It is a 16` 16:10 with a powerful CPU and a good GPU. The screen is amazing, the keyboard is very good, and the chassis is aluminum.

In these months I had to fix the touchpad because it was not working anymore, and that was a massive issue, but the worst is that the battery capacity dropped to 83% capacity in only a few months time.

Luckily the battery is big, 87W, but this rapid drop was unexpected.

When I stress the laptop a bit it is so hot you can barely touch it. 80-90C. And I had to render the TROM II documentary on this laptop. Got crazy hot, for many weeks on end.

Therefore, I highly suspect that the battery capacity dropped because of the heat. I cannot see any other reason.

But now is July and I am in Spain. Thus, it is hot as fuck. This is tomorrow:

So hot it is difficult to keep my own body cool, let alone this laptop.

So I decided to buy a laptop fan. This sort:

But the fan was barely creating any sort of air flow. I ordered two more...All under 20 Euros because I don't feel in the mood to spend more than that on a fan for the laptop....considering it has one inside-the-fucking-chassis!

After two weeks of use the temperature of the laptop would not go above 80-85C when I'd stress the laptop. So a 5-10C cooler. But I was not happy!

I said let's try something else. Let's order a fucking fan....you know a normal one. But a small one. And cheap as fuck. I spent too much time looking for one, but I eventually bought this one for 7 Euros:

And guess what? With that setup my laptop is always cool. Even when I stress it it will stay at around 60-65C max. That's a massive improvement!

And I have to say that I never thought I'd be excited about a fucking fan. But this one, for 7 Euros....is my favorite fan ever. Why?

First the way it is designed. You can put this fan in many different ways.

You can put it sideways, upside down, or flat on the table.

You can even hang it on the wall...

And so it allows me to position it anyway I want. Like directly bellow the laptop:

So it is extremely handy.

Best part? It has a rechargeable battery inside so you can use it for 1-3 hours on the battery alone. This is useful because now it is so hot I take it with me when I move with my laptop. Like put it in bed to blow air on the laptop while I hold it on my lap. It has 5 speeds and it is more powerful than you may think :). Plus it has a USB C connector so it is easy to find a replaceable cable when you need one.

Actually I was so impressed that I ordered one more, to blow air on my USB C dongle that is metal and I noticed it got extremely hot. I use one single dongle to connect my laptop to the charger, external monitor, projector, mouse, speakers, LAN, and more. I love it because I can plug/unplug with ease. But because it was getting so hot my LAN connection will drop several times a day.

Now that I got that cool fan, there is no drop anymore :).

Conclusion.

These special laptop fans are bullshit. At least those under 20. I tried several and they were very inefficient. And no, is not because they try to keep them silent and thus less powerful....the small fan that I got is also very quiet....but at least it works! Also, fuck you people who design such thin laptops and do not care much about the heat dispersal. Why the fuck you put a fan inside if it is so inefficient anyway? I guess they have to sell these laptops based on looks....I see....

Anyway, if your laptop gets hot, invest some 20 Euros and buy yourself a metal stand for it plus a mini fan. You can always repurpose that fan. And you can get a nice laptop stand.

The biggest achievement for me via TROM, is by far the few friends that I made because of the project. These humans are so rare and wonderful I can't even explain it. Scientifically minded, kind, fun, interesting. They are so friendly and comfortable to be around. I do not think TROM has the power to change the world, and I hope I am wrong and I will keep on trying, BUT TROM has changed my life completely.

One decision, 13 years ago. And now I have the best friends in the world.

For me it was totally worth it and unexpected. And I am sure I will meet more of these wonderful brains.

I never thought I would like a fucking fan so much....but I bought a 7Euro one to keep my laptop cool and I am impressed by it haha. I will even make a short article about it, because it is about how I keep my laptop cool and how those special laptop fan-stands are BS. Maybe more expensive ones are ok, but under 20Euros are crap. I just use a normal fucking fan :)

But yah wtf I never thought I'd like a fucking fan so much haha.

Ok so I see that the official Libreddit is shutting down github.com/libreddit/libreddit… because of Reddit's API changes. Teddit or other ones are also dead. You know, in a way for me personally I think this is positive because lately I spent too much time on Reddit via Teddit. I never used Reddit before Teddit. So yeah, for me it is a better thing. I don't need to see the oddities of the world so much haha. Better focus on other things.

Our Teddit instance, like all others, is starting to feel the effect of the Reddit API limitation. It mostly does not work. Our Nitter now works, which is really cool. And Invidious was removed but I may bring it back on another server separate from trom.tf to not impact the IP. I'll wait to see if they find a fix for it, then I'll try it out.

Reddit, Twitter, Youtube....these ad-platforms that do not like when the content created by their users, not themselves, is accessed for free.

Our Nitter instance works again thanks to some magic that the developers have done. We rely on it for our Illustrations part of TROMnews https://tromnews.com/illustrations/ and generally for RSS purposes. Twitter is trying hard to not let anyone use their "assets" (website) without being logged in, tracked, abused with ads, or pay a membership on the website. Trade-Incentives.
Ok so we are happy that https://bird.trom.tf/ is working again. However for how long no one knows probably. #tromlive

Great video @Nick @ The Linux Experiment ! I totally agree that the modern ad-bloated internet is unusable and it will definitely become worse. It is great you demonstrate alternative federated networks and actively use those to share your content too, thank you for that. This is also a very good that you emphasize that YouTube content (or any other content) has never been free and it has always been in return for your data and attention (ads). That is a really good analysis, but I would also like to encorage you to look even beyond that, on the root-cause of this urge for profits, which eventually ruins everything - the incentive to trade. We have to build a society, which fulfills at least basic needs for the people for surviving in this world, so they can have more time to create something meaningful, share with others and enjoy what they are doing (including creating more content they like for the alternative platforms), rather than dying at somewhat jobs just to have food and shelter.
There are TROM project and @Tio, who has been arguing for more than 10 years already that The TRADE is the origin of the most problems humanity faces today and that we have to oppose ever-increasing persuit of profit. They recenly released a 5 hours long documentary, describing this problem in great details and discussing the possible solutions to it, such as trade-free movement. I would like to gratefully ask you to spend a bit of your time on it and help to spread the word, since it seems like you are not indifferent to the future of the internet and, I am sure, to the future of humanity too.

Today I tested the @PeerTube remote runners. Quite a lot. 2 servers and 2 local machines (laptops).

The conclusion:

The transcoding is fast and that's great. The main server where Peertube is hosted can breath and not stress about converting any videos.

However, videos that are longer than 1h may fail at times, and idk why. But it is rare it seems. And then other runners can take over but if the runner that was converting it hangs....then it hangs forever. This is concerning. Imagine someone uploads a huge video and it will forever remain non-converted because the runner stalled. Peertube devs are aware of this. So probably they will fix it ;).

Else all works quite good. Granted that you have a very good internet connection for your remote runners and a stable one. If the connection drops, then things will go into uncharted territory.

So they are on a good path. But the fact that I feel kinda stressed about "What if a runner drops a connection? What if a runner stalls? What if a runner fails?" that makes it a bit tricky to use for now. But we will try to still use it for our main instance and monitor closely. I want this thing to work great, because it is a fantastic feature, and one that allows us to scale up more.

What I would like to see is: safety nets!

If a remote runner transcodes a video, but the process is interrupted, wait a few seconds to see if the runner can pick it up again, if not switch to another runner. If none is available put it in queue and do it as soon as any runner is available.

Make it work alongside the local server and let admins use it as they want. I'd love to enable something like "local server runner backup". In case all other runners are not available, always default to the local one, to make sure the transcoding WILL happen no matter what.

Lastly, for lives, we need proper safety net because lives will interrupt at times. So be patient, wait for it to reconnect. If a remote runner drops the connection, switch the live to another runner.

Anyway. I love this feature!

We bought a microscope but I was not very aware as to what to look for so I will return and buy a better one.

But here's an interesting thing I realized while watching this some scientists talking about microscopes and how to choose one: I love watching these videos and I retain the info very quick. I know what is important for a microscope and what to look for. But if I try for a few minutes to imagine that I NEED to learn these for an exam/school, so to watch the same videos from that perspective, I feel like puking. And I can't remember much.

That's the effect that school has on all, or most children. Forced learning sucks big time for learning purposes.

The situation with the trade-free instances like Invidious, Nitter, and Teddit.
As some of you already know, these pieces of software act as an interface for the big ad-platforms like Youtube, Twitter and Reddit. They remove the ads, trackers and all of the bullshit, and let you see the content. Now YouTube is banning the IPs of the servers that use Invidious, Twitter has cut the public access to their website and thus no way to make Nitter work, and Reddit has limited their API and thus more and more Teddit/Libreddit instances will die.
This is a cat and mouse game, and the cat has huge resources. We cannot host Invidious on our TROM.tf because we cannot afford to change our IP every 2 weeks. Our Nitter does not work, and Teddit may die soon. Although the developers are working to circumvent these issues and make these instances work again, this is a concerning situation overall.
The solution?
For Youtube: use FreeTube. It runs locally and it is the perfect Youtube trade-free interface. It is a lot less likely for Youtube to shut this one down. Alternatively look more into Peertube. Unfortunately all of the video content is on Youtube....
For Teddit: use the Reddit's RSS to subscribe to subreddits. Alternatively look into Lemmy. But again, most of the content is on Reddit...
For Nitter: Forget about Twitter and move to the fediverse where there are millions of people already.
Facebook, Threads, TikTok, and the like, are ad-platforms that cannot be "fixed" by any interface. Their content is also not worthy of anything.
Be brave and slowly ditch these ad-networks.
We are working on a book about The Internet and there we will detail all of these. Unfortunately the financial support that TROM gets is so low that we may not even create that book or any other book. I hope I do not bother mentioning you people, but I want to get this documentary out.

In short, it is a 4 part 5 hours long documentary about our society. The culture that influences us, how money ruins many lives, how much we are wasting and destroying everything around. But in the end it is positive. We look at volunteers, non profit organizations, even FOSS and the fediverse.

This guy man...

He bitches about the awfulness of these ad networks and the fucked up trade society, but he does not have the incentive and curiosity to try the fediverse. I contacted him several times. If he is aware of the fediverse but refused to give it a try or he was not willing to join, and then he joins Threads .... then he is lost and fake.

If you can't fucking change your "social presence" from ad networks to proper decentralized networks, despite you talking all about how we can change the society and how bad these billionaires and companies are, maybe you need to look at yourself first.

People who bitch about these companies but still use them despite there being better free alternatives, are idiots.
