Let me tell you I am so sick of color-correcting....I hope tonight's render of the first part is the final one in terms of color correcting. I should really fucking stop. Hopefully tomorrow I can apply these changes to the second part and won't take me too long....this starts to bother me :D

At the beginning of december I will take a week break or so....

Oh and cannot wait for my laptop to arrive. Hopefully this next week. And let's see how distracted I'll get by that....

I still hope to finish the 3rd part by the end of this year.....

When I was little I somehow opened up my TV's display settings and accidentally changed something, I think it was color saturation or brightness or something, I'm not sure. Anyway, now my TV looks kinda weird, it didn't look like how it used to be and I could tell the difference. I tried so hard to undo these changes and go back to the old look, but little me couldn't do it. But here's the interesting thing, after a couple of days I got used to the new look and it became the normal for me 😅

True I agree. Is just that my idea was to film us on a completely black background for consistency, and to do some editing stuff like adding things on that background when we talk. And the issue was that almost all of us are on light-ish backgrounds and different colors and such....I will make a post to showcase these days. I wanted to make it look ok, nothing crazy. But am getting there....

I have to setup 2 Mastodon instances/servers these days for WebApe. That's good, both for me because I get more financial help, and for the fediverse overall I suppose. Helping others migrate to this network.

I plan to eventually team up with @Aaron and get financial support via WebApe to be able to continue our work on TROM, while at the same time providing these sort of federated services for those who are ok to pay for them.

I was talking at one point with @Cleo of Topless Topics about making a Peertube instance for nonsexual nudity - like be geared towards that - since nudity is something people are so afraid of and we should educate them a bit that it is ok. Tits and dicks, butts and legs, vaginas and all that. :) I think could be a good idea. Something you can't do on youtube and may be able to on other platforms that are either full of

By the way if anyone wants a Mastodon server I provide via webape.site - I am already getting new requests and will take a few days to process new ones, but if you want one you can simply pay and have it all setup. Backups included.

Mind you I also provide trade-free services via trom.tf and lots of stuff via tromsite.com. WebApe is to allow me to support these free projects.

Via WebApe I also provide Friendica instances, Peertube, or Nextcloud.

So you ask at least €150/month for a *cheap* VPS of €31.50. That's a lot of money you make. Especially for someone who says 'that trade is the origin of most problems'.

That is ok if you think that. But the costs are more since I do backups to other servers, for which I also pay. And I do all of the work: setup the server, keep it updated, install the services, manage them, design, debug, provide a webmail, for Wordpress access to a paid-for suite of plugins, and more.

I also cannot scale this up, so I either make enough to support myself out of a few websites, or I can't do it at all.

Yes, trade is the origin of most problems, and it is unfortunate that I have to trade my skills/time for WebApe instead of putting all of my efforts into TROMsite and its projects. But I have no other choice. If you and others would donate to support the 20+ services from trom.tf (including, friendica, nexycloud, peertube and a lot more) then I could expand those that are trade-free. Even make multiple and free Mastodon instances, provide help for free to others who want to setup theirs, and a lot more.

I rely on donations from 2011. I managed to "make it" for more than a decade. Never sold anything, never traded my stuff or myself. except a few t

I understand that you want to make money of it. But this huge difference looks like it is a scam (I don't say it is). For webmail and backups you will benefit from bulk purchase, so that is not the issue I think.

Normally when you sell something in the capitalist world and when the company wants to make profit, it's around twice the cost price. If I was you I would make it completely transparant how these prices are calculated.

I am 1 person I manage 30+ websites that are free. I am already managing 5 more for WebApe. There is no way I can work on more than 20 websites for WebApe and from my calculations that would get me around the minimum wage where I live. That's the best I can do.

Also for that 150 Euros a month plan the server is around 40 Euros with taxes, the backup can be around 20-30 Euros more for such a large diskspace. And the problems, setup, and management a lot more difficult when we talk about such big projects that require such a subscription plan.

I think it is quite cheap the way I provide it. And if you think it is not, then fine. I cannot drop the cost lower than that. Anyone is free to either install their own instances or make their own websites, or even use ours at trom.tf.

Normally when you sell something in the capitalist worlds and when the company wants to make profit, it's around twice the cost price.

Look I know very well that managed servers are 5-10 times the price of unmanaged ones. Go on the contabo website, select that 40 Eu

As said, I don't criticize you because of the fact you want to make money of it. It's about not transparent about how that figure is calculates. I also have VPS's at Contabo and that's why I immediately recognized the VPS SSD XL and I was surprised by that €150. BTW, I'm living below minimum wage and I do everything for free (but I do only activist related stuff).

And that's awful and great at the same time. We should not struggle to live in this world, but it is fantastic that you do free things. I've always done free things except WebApe that I started a year ago out of desperation because I was broke. Even now we live 2 people with some half the minimum wage in spain. It is fine for us we don't need expensive stuff.

Anyway, if you look at how much I charge I think it is way bellow what normally it is charged for hosting + webdesign + webmanagement.

have you considered including some form of help with moderation? There are sadly a lot of people already experiencing some pretty bad attacks on mastodon, and it'd be amazing for new instance admins to have a leg up on trying to manage things!

fair enough; I and a number of others who have been around the fediverse for a long time are worried that the existing tools and support aren't enough, and there are a number of conversations around making things better.

What would make it possible for you to ensure that the instances people host with you (and other providers, not trying to single you out, just hoping to learn!) are able to offer meaningful and sustainable moderation/trust and safety support?

I agree that if you make an instance about cats and some want to post about dogs, it is right to not accept that since you clearly said the instance is about cats. So people should decide about their own instances but never ban other instances at the instance level. If the cat people want to talk to the dog people, let them do.

Now I get that there is a lot of harmful content out there. The classic one is child porn. I agree it is inhumane to abuse humans, of all ages I would add. But I would say depictions of fame, fortune, advertising of any kind, depictions of guns or violent games, are also extremely harmful. And thus my point: who decides where to draw the line? It is complicated....

I run a Friendica instance and a Peertube one. Friendica for now is not moderated to see where it leads. So far no issues. Peertube I had to impose a thematic to get rid of idiots, and so far it works. If your videos are not about science/tech/education in English, they are removed.

Therefore after many long discussion about moderation on the fediverse I think the solutions are:

Enforce a thematic on your own instance but never block the federation with other instances so we don't break the fediverse.
Users should easily be able to block/mute other users, other instances, or posts based on keywords.
Control the comments on posts: the ability to only allow friends to comment on your posts for example, or not accept comments.
Enable optional block lists similar to adblock lists. These lists can be communally created and maintained. Want to block the nazis? Enable the nazi block list!
Learn to relax a bit. Yes there are many idiots out there but at the end of the day they are a mere bunch of words on a screen. I got cursed and all that, so many times over the years, and almost all of the time I kept being calm and nice. I was surprised how annihilating that was for the trolls, almost like unable to touch me, and how relaxing it was for me. This is very important to keep in mind. Keep calm, it will help you take wiser decisions.
Admins should be able to not publicly showcase posts based on users, words, instances.

Ok that was a lot of writing.

However when it comes to WebApe it is way beyond me what people do with the technical service I provide.

I ordered the TROM Laptop :D - finally. After weeks of research and days or discussions with the Slimbook and Tuxedo people I have decided to go for the Executive 16 Slimbook. Basically I wanted to buy a laptop around April next year after am done with TROM 2, but Slimbook had a 150 Euros discount so I said I might as well buy it now. I have a donation campaign for it where I explain it all.

This is the laptop:

Why buy this?

Unlike Tuxedo that has plastic chassis with magnesium alloy steamed onto it, Slimbook is only magnesium and aluminium alloy. I want a "metal" laptop. No more plastic please!

It has a 16'' screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. As tall as my 17.3'' laptop and only a bit less wide. Speaking of the screen seems like a great one, and almost no bezels.

Thus it is smaller in size than a normal 15'' laptop.
It is light and thin. Just 1.5kg light and 2cm max thin when closed. That's very portable.
Good selection of ports. All I need!
The power of it! The i7-12700H has 14 cores and 20 threads. My current one has 4 cores and 8 threads. Big difference. This laptop also has an NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti 4GB DDR6 - yes I do not game at all, but I do a lot of video editing and other tasks like live-streaming for TROMcast that could take a great deal of advantage of this nvidia GPU. All in all this laptop is a beast. Hardware wise should last me for at least a decade.
Slimbook is designed for Linux and the folks behind it seem to be very open-source driven. They are also super friendly. I talked to them over email almost daily for the past days. Funny enough they know about TROM and TROMjaro haha. And even consider adding TROMjaro as one of the OS selections when people buy a Slimbook.
They are from Spain, where I live, and I get 3 year warranty. Plus they have a bunch of spare parts on their website so I can repair mine in case I need to.
The laptop has 2 m2 slots and that's super useful since I need a lot of diskspace.

On paper all looks great. The battery probably is not going to be great (nvidia!) and the keyboard....I hate that numpad thing and I never use it. I feel like it is a waste of space....but well.

Let's see when it arrives how good it is. But yeah, I am happy I finally did this. My current laptop is some 6-7 years old and I think I can for sure keep a laptop for a decade if it is well built.

Am also very curious. I only had 2 laptops. First had a terrible screen, only HD and awful colors and viewing angles. All plastic. This laptop I have is fine, but plastic can't even open close the lid without sweating bullets because I may break it. :D

So Yeah I am very grateful for your help you know that. Can't wait to see you and the rest in May :)

Does anyone know what the Tuxedo Computers means by their laptops like TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 16 - Gen7 being made out of plastic but having magnesium alloy steamed onto that? That's what they keep on telling me over email, while on their website it says:

Material: Display lid, top and bottom case made of magnesium alloy (AZ91D), Display frame made of plastic

I am curious....

Then I tell them that Slimbooks are made fully out of aluminium and magnesium alloys, as confirmed by Slimbook, and then they say: We looked at their website and indeed they are made out of "aluminium and magnesium " so they are not metal.

Whatt!?

Aren't aluminium and magnesium metals? What am I missing? So confused....

I am losing my mind with the color and luminosity/exposure correction for my recordings for TROM II....I sure did a lot of improvement but damn I start to hate it. It is because the recording is so bad and I am trying to fix it. I really hope to settle my mind on some solution tomorrow. This is too much already....

So 3 days ago I fractured my collarbone. I think so. That's what the doctor said today. I have a lot of pain in my right arm and the joint of the collarbone with the rib bone (however you call that) is swollen. The pain is 9 out of 10. But it is a 1-2 out of 10 when I sit at the computer, which is helpful. My arm cannot move that much. I was given painkillers and they sent me for an x-ray. On 12th of december hahaha. Ok....well....let's do an X-Ray in a month and see what's going on. Thanks Spain! I sure appreciate the free healthcare tho. So that's ok.

But I am continuing my TROM II work. I amazed by how much @Roma helped me with this laptop donation campaign....wow can't believe I can finally start to move my old and slow stuff to 1 single device.... I will review the laptop when it arrives and I may have another great news in regards with this laptop and the people behind it, something that has to do with TROMjaro ;) .... let's see...

So these days I was talking to the Tuxedo folks to ask details about the build quality of their laptops and I am quite surprised. Not a positive surprise.

Basically I thought that laptops made out of aluminium and magnesium alloys are....metals....however they told me that their magnesium alloy laptops are basically magnesium alloy steamed onto plastic....so they are plastic!? They said they do not have metal built laptops...how odd.

The people from slimbook.es/en/store/slimbook-… that have laptops which are almost identical to Tuxedo's said theirs are fully metal except the tiny display frame made out of plastic.

@Nick @ The Linux Experiment you reviewed these laptops a lot, what do you think? I got the impression from your videos, and others, that these laptops are metal-built and not plastic...

Tuxedo and Slimboo use the same chassis for most of their models, and they’re almost all magnesium alloy. While I don’t know the chemical process used, they don’t feel like plastic, and they’re definitely sturdier than plastic. My slimbook pro x 14 was carried around eve where for almost 2 years, and it has one visible scratch, the palm rests are intact, it’s super solid. It’s not aluminium, but it’s not far behind!

hm...yeah that's what I got from your videos too. Do you also have a fully aluminium laptop and if so how do they compare? Interestingly they recommended me the TUXEDO InfinityBook S 15 - Gen7 as their best built laptop, which is half plastic. So if they consider that a better built than the almost-fully magnesium alloy builds, it is a bit confusing to me.

I used a few, a Mac a while ago, and a Starlabs laptop. Aluminum feels denser, heavier, and probably a bit more scratch resistant, but it’s also way more prone to fingerprints, and honestly, over a few years, I wouldn’t say the magnesium laptops felt any less solid.

!Friendica Admins How non-recommended is to downgrade from a dev version of friendica to a stable one? The @YunoHost developers pushed an update recently to the Friendica package and by mistake they labeled it as stable but the update was taken from the dev branch. So people updated to the dev branch...now they are trying to push a fix and in the fix to force the instances that upgraded to the dev, to revert back to stable.

Can you please tell me if this is a good idea? I want to make them aware if not. Thanks!

Two meals a day for everyone, trade-free access to the Internet, investing a lot of resources in non-meat food alternatives, and kick-starting a massive sharing platform (online/offline) so that we can all share the vast amounts of wasted and unused stuff that we have around. Even sharing a room/place to stay. How amazing! This, they hope, will incentivize people to re-use, rather than buy useless shit all the time.

Lastly, they realize that laws and rules do not work, so their overall approach is to create a better society from within the current one. One that does not rely on trade but on share. This way we can make companies and profiteers obsolete, with time. The focus will be on how to protect us and the nature, using renewable energies, less polluting practices, and so forth, since there is no incentive to do otherwise. All, while decoupling ourselves from the need for trade. Have a lot more free time, get more educated, get involved.

I am struggling a bit with the documentary these days to fix the colors and lighting for the interviews. I also had an idea about what to do next in terms of editing....but I got too tired these days ... I need some break. Will take one for a week or so at the beginning of december. Ideally I should finish the editing before April so that I have time to go through it all and improve it a bit here and there. I also plan to buy a new laptop around that time and move everything to that machine but not before I am 100% sure the documentary is ready for release.

Ideally I should also move to a new server all of our websites....and that's a huge task....

I am a bit under pressure because of the TROM Meeting in May :D - I want all to be done by then.

I think the 3rd part should be done by the end of this year, or max mid January. Then I will have to finish the 4th and last part and ideally (again that word) should take me around 2-3 months to finish it.

Anyway a lot of fuckin' work. And I'd also like to start a donation campaign for that laptop very soonish maybe

The RSS part of Friendica again does not work properly and your RSS feeds won't be updated that fast. This is because we have a lot of processes in the queue and probably this will be fixed as soon as we upgrade to the latest Friendica release, and I will try to do that at the end of this month or the beginning of the next.

Am I the only one who searches for the build quality + repaireability of a laptop when looking to buy one? Why aren't most laptops displaying that sort of info!? I can search for gaming laptops, and thin laptops, and based on cpu and gpu, the Xk screen, whatever the shit but not by build quality....

Maybe this is a signature of our fucked up society where most people are interested in more disposable products, lured in by companies who want the same.

Show me a great built laptop, that I can easily upgrade and repair, has a great battery, ok big screen, ok cpu, and is not as heavy as a brick! :D

I wish Manyverse would take off - manyver.se/ - 100% decentralized social network based on scuttlebutt.

After I release TROM II I will try, little by little, to fully migrate to these decentralized platforms like Scuttlebutt and Tox for messaging. We really need that and not servers and centralization.

The Fediverse and Matrix, are great for now. But they are what I like to call as decentralized centralization. Several servers instead of 1. And only a few have most of the users, thus have immense control over the entire network.

Yes I use Syncthing a lot. It is my main file sharing tool. I also use Bittorrent a lot for al of my media needs. Tox seems to be one great network for messaging that I will try to switch over to maybe next year.

Messengers like Tox doesn't require you to join a server and you can start connecting with friends right away, but when I installed Manyverse on my phone its asking me to join a room/pub server to connect with people. I think a truly decentralized p2p app should at least allow us to connect directly with friends, like how Tox does it, no need to go and find a server for yourself. Having servers in the network is not a big issue, but we shouldn't be completely reliant on it.

There are also some practical issues with the way scuttlebutt works. In it everyone has to store everyone else's data on their device, this can take up a lot of storage space, but it also means that there's no reliable way for you to delete or edit your message, something which I think is an essential feature these days. It'd be a lot better if only you store your data in your own device and also sync it with your current home server (so that others can view your posts when you're offline). @Twann :artix: :nonbinary_flag: also brought up an important point, all of these p2p apps should at least give us an option to use a... 100%! This was my main criticism of the scuttlebutt project that you have to join these "pubs". It is better than how the fediverse works but it will still concentrate power into big pubs that can refuse you if the admin wishes to.

I also wish these kinds of things would take off. Part of me wants it to be easy for all of my existing friends to join up, and another part wants to make new friends of the sort who would be interested in doing the work to make this stuff work. Quite the tension!

Thanks, I thought so too at the time :) But we also needed to integrate it more closely than just running it as a separate process and Jakob was initially involved so I thought we could do that but he decided he wanted to concentrate on Syncthing alone (fair enough) so we never managed to move beyond a certain point. The experience taught me a lot about having control over your core tech & my eventual disillusionment with Apple paved the way for the small web work.

Yeah, but if you sync your social media posts via bittorrent across millions of peers then you won't be able to edit or delete your post, we need the opposite of this, to keep your posts in your own device and maybe also a server of your choosing (so that people can access your posts when you're offline). Bittorrent is good for sharing media, but won't work well for a social media.

Really interesting presentation and you are very good at making these presentations very fun to watch. I was pleasantly surprised by how you showcased the interface for Heardbeat. Unique. And your analogy with the bullshit tree is so to the point and funny. I loved it. I made a simialr analogy in my book The Origin of Most Problems where I argued actually that we cannot throw seeds on an infertile soil and expect good things to grow out of it. You need a proper soil to plant seeds and I describe how that "soil" should look like. Funny enough I think it combines very well with your analogy because in order for us to plant a new sort of tree we need to have the conditions for it, like support to develop such alternative platforms and programs. Else the seed cannot grow into a tree.

I am quite sure bittorrent and the new torrent files are now editable by the "owner" of them. You can look it up but am pretty sure that's the new way and works. Plus you have something like the DAT network that was experimental in this regards and worked like that with edits being pushed by the owner of files. Basically they showcased you can have dynamic websites that are fully p2p.

In my experience with talking to people, P2P is a bit confusing. They either confuse it for client-queue-client or think of something like BitTorrent or perhaps I2P. I think F2F is a more precise term that describes a very specific type of P2P: wikiless.northboot.xyz/wiki/Fr…

Also, it really does look to me that decentralization is the same kind of buzzword as "cloud computing" nowadays, grouping together F2F, BitTorrent, federation, blockchain and Web3 (which is a bunch of closed-off prisons built on proprietary technology). It's almost as if these terms are deliberately used to muddy the waters.

F2F works for social media contexts, but I'd like to have P2P rather than client/server as a software architecture core design principle, for many more contexts, to try and recover (conquer?) the notion of cloud as a user-beneficial rather than user-exploitative concept.

First time I hear of Friend to Friend....interesting. I tested Retroshare a lot in the past and I wanted to move all of my projects' work there but never really worked well for me. I think it is not maintained in some time now...a shame...

I think Retroshare and Scuttlebutt are fairly similar, Manyverse is just a client for Scuttlebutt. Similar to how Mastodon is the server back-end for accessing the Fediverse.

Yes I know, maybe I gave the wrong impression that Manyverse is a network while in fact it is a client for the scuttlebutt network. Same as Mastodon is for the fediverse.
