This is me and my best friend at that time. Peak early 2000.

We were lip-syncing (popular back then) Romanian rap songs on the stage, having fun. Bomfunk’s MC, breakdance, spiky hair, loose clothes. Nothing to do with the Romanian culture, of course.

So let’s be real for a bit here, all of those Catalan, or Romanian, or whatever cultural traditions are at best a day in the calendar for most people, since most people absorb their values from a wider world, through a lot of means: from music to platforms, movies to books.

For better or for worse.

In Spain is quite impossible to rent any place for long term since the owners of apartments and houses prefer to rent for tourists: short term, more money. But who are these owners? Spanish, Catalans…

Same Spaniards or Catalans would prefer to employ immigrants for a lower pay and no paperwork since it is more profitable for them. Money is a lot stronger of an influence than culture.

In Catalonia they provide courses for “immigrants” to learn Catalan so they can integrate into the society. We know many Moroccans who take these courses, and sometimes they can even get benefits from taking them.

But then if you look at their Muslim culture it has nothing to do with the Catalan one. So what if they know Catalan? Does that mean they are vessels of the Catalan culture? Of course not.

Don’t get me wrong is good to help people integrate, if they so wish, but don’t regard it as if these people are bending to the culture, since it can be vice-versa and they can lead to the mutation of culture. From USA to Catalonia and everywhere else.

The Extreme Hypocrisy!

Everyone knows this guy unfortunately (Trump) and how he wants to make America Great “Again”… And how he is deporting so many “illegal” immigrants, and how he makes it difficult for others to come to the USA tribe.

Here is him posing proudly with the US Physics team that won five gold medals at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad:

These are all children of immigrants. As you can tell.
None is a “native” American, whatever that means.

Of course pretty much all products in Catalonia come from abroad: food, clothes, cars, electronics. I cannot name a single product that is Catalan made. Same goes for Spain overall or any other tribe. Their phones, the apps they use, the knowledge they have, research, even media, everything either comes from outside or is remixed from outside.

So what is so unique about your tribe?

How many people celebrate the holy-days today in the same way that people celebrated them 50-100 years ago?

I know that for us, coming from a very religious tribe called Romania, Christmas was more about the Christmas tree, presents, food and Coca-Cola. Oh and watching Home Alone on repeat. Nothing to do with the original Christmas “holy” day. Or anything Romanian specific either.

And so it was the case for everyone I knew. And that’s one of the many “holy” days that today have become mostly about consuming.

The forces of our trade-based society with its marketing tentacles, are transforming the culture more than any dictators and philosophers do. That you should keep in mind.

Snippet from Culture Cancer:

I am quite happy that some of our roots in Europe, like those from the Ottoman empire, are long gone because I would not want to wear this fashionable-onion-hat.

And most likely very few in Europe would probably listen to the Ottoman music today, or understand their contemporary poetry and art. Not to mention their buildings and many traditions that are not at all compatible with today’s standards, morally and structurally.

But these are our “roots”, right? Or if we go back our roots in Europe were the Roman empire. Should we go way back? Why do we regard “our culture” as the “happenings” that have happened only for the past hundreds of years? Isn’t that an arbitrary line to draw and call it “our culture”? Especially since we know we cannot freeze that culture in time and hope to take it with us intact into the distant future.

Catalonia and the people speaking the catalan language reside mostly here:

And this is how they ended up here:

What was there before?

Some Muslims it seems with their own language and culture.

To quote Wikipedia: “From the 8th century onwards the Catalan counts extended their territory southwards and westwards at the expense of the Muslims, bringing their language with them.”

The classic way of grabbing land, kicking off the “native” people (who very likely did the same thing to others who where there before them), put fences and borders and called it their land with their own language. The story of every tribe. Spain, France, USA … Every single one.

So true man.... I'm not really a big sports person but I did watch the recent world cup and this is something you can notice in every team. Is not so much about the country as it is about the team, I'm not sure why they even attach nationality into this.

Also that story of Nico's parents having to cross the Sahara desert is truly insane man. Such things still happen today when it comes to human trafficking!

The french fries probably originated from Spain some 400 years ago.
Fish and chips are a kind of food that was introduced in England by immigrants.
And the Spanish paella emerged from the Muslims who began rice cultivation in what is today called as “Spain”.

Look at the evolution of the popular Chicken Tikka Masala (Wikipedia):

Evolution of chicken tikka masala as a multicultural British dish.[41][4] Chicken tikka was created in Mughal India using Persian marinading of meat in yoghurt and Central Asian tandoor roasting with Indian spices.[42] In 20th century Britain, a sauce was added to meet the British liking for gravy with meat.[12] The dish has evolved further to a taco filling in the US,[36] and to a pizza topping in India.[39] Tacos originated from Mexico.[43] Pizzas originated from Italy.[44]

First of all what is “culture”?

We humans have borders that divide us into tribes. The rules of the division are not always clear. Language? But USA and Australia speak the same language…
Same is the case for South Africa, England, Sudan, Botswana, Nigeria, Singapore, Namibia or Ghana. And some 100 more tribes:

French? Some 50 tribes speak French!

The fact is that there are many tribes that speak the same language yet their cultures can be totally different.

So what makes a “culture” is a soup of traditions, beliefs, religion, food, knowledge, art, clothing style, humor, sport, and so on.

A cluster of values that makes a group of people a bit different from another.

In that sense cultures are not only limited by borders and tribes, but they can form around a topic of interest such as gaming, movies, even celebrities.

I think focusing on these little things, for these little platforms like ours, makes no difference and sense. I can clearly see a huge difference between 480p and fullHD. Changing the world should also keep us reasonable. Should we also measure the energy it takes for you to start this conversation? :)

For now HD and FullHD are very much reasonable resolutions. If the internet speed is an issue for some, I am sorry but enabling one more lower res will put too much toll on our server's diskspace. We cannot afford it.
