A good news: G.Skill accepted the warranty return, and sending new ones. The bad news: they wanted the 'couple' of RAM stick I bought at that time, so I'm returning 16GB, and run right now with only 16GB. For real; it's ok: with a little RAM monitor on my systray bar, it's to start to close things when consumption is too high.

However, I have to say that relying on GitHub releases is not that bad of a deal with an app store like Obtainium, which streamlines app updates. It's actually a quite secure model since it comes as straight from the developer as it possibly can.

@TTFKA_Tay0 To be fair, they are not alternatives, they use the same code, and are at the mercy of Google when it comes to releasing such code. Otherwise, once installed, Lineage and other Android distributions can give the freedom back to their users to install what they want.

I still have problems to understand what happens with apps like those of fossify, or DuckDuckGo for example, that i downloaded and maintain over F-Droid, but that are also available on Playstore and thus should be under the "verified" category.

The users are trapped: Banking Apps and some others don' t work with Custom Roms. Open Source from free places will no longer work on G-Android.

@Alonely0 @cy8aer Older apps were added when reproducibility wasn't achievable. For this reason today only about 22% of apps that we host are signed by their developer. This number will increase with time as we push for reproducibility at inclusion time. Also, switching from one signer to another is an annoying process that users need to take manually, for security reasons.

its a good thing actually as the main thing it affects is intimate partner violence stalking and really low hanging fruit malware. you can literally still sideload, you just cant distribute apks anonymously. you can still modify a phone to remove the restriction, just not without the owner noticing, which is the actual point. this is completely out of touch with the reality of the android malware ecosystem, the harm it causes and why they are actually doing this.

@fdroidorg @marcprux I've really appreciated F-Droid lately. I'm setting up a new Lenovo Tab3 running 5.0.1 - 99% of my apps have been sideloaded APKs. Google doesn't support it, so no updates but they don't keep trying to "improve" my experience either.

I hate to disagree here, but as an admin who deals with *many* users with phones in the wild, this is a *good* move by Google. They're *NOT* stopping you from side-loading apps. They're doing the same thing banks have started doing when people try to withdraw cash -- verifying that you're not being coached or hacked and that you *REALLY* want to do what you said. Our Friendica is struggling. We get a lot of 502 Bad Gateway (nginx). CPU is at 100% all the time eaten by Friendica. This has happened after the update to the latest Friendica stable. It seems that there are many processes happening in the database.
The post-user table has 64,135,238 rows...I suspect this is an issue. I am not sure if Friendica is reindexing or doing something now after the update...

Phase 4: use telemetry/spyware in said datacenters to surveil/harvest data from every user of said cloud PCs and use it to serve hyper-targeted ads (everyone knows people love hyper-targeted ads) and send drone fleets to respond to/harass dissenters domestic terrorists
@tomcat back when I was a child, like in the 90s I had this idea of the future but not so orwellian. I imagined that most homes would eventually have a big powerful computer in a cliset/basement/attic and then have several like dumb terminals around that accessed that data. So like you have all the music you like on the central computer then you go in the kitchen and tell the kitchen terminal to play your favorite song.

I hope this will help break the mental cycle that mandates the necessity of having to buy new stuff regularly instead of using what's already there up to its actual lifetime. That way, this would in the long term hurt companies who's business model relies on creating artificial demand instead of providing actually necessary products and services.

i remember the days when guys would hand-edit the bad block tables on Seagate ST-225s and sell them for $100 because new ones were still $300 and nobody could afford ST-4096s. A whole cottage industry sprang up around keeping 225s around. A whole 20 meg 40 years ago. 20 meg was actually large enough for Windows 1.02 or Digital Research GEM or just fuckin' DOS and Multimate or WordStar.

How does a large spike in demand for a monopolized industry give any indication that the goal is to move users over to cloud computing? What makes this different from the pandemic shortage, or the 2011 Japan earthquake? From my perspective, this takes away from a lot of the closer, very concrete problems AI is causing right now.

Also keep in mind that social media discussions and comments will always have a bias towards the loud and angry voices, no one will make a post saying "You know that HolosDiscover project, I don't really mind it because they respect my settings". It is similar to the survivorship bias if you're familiar with that, your data points are incomplete.

That stuff people post publically to fediverse servers was indexed? i can see robotic scraping of servers being problematic for instance owners, but how much privacy can we really expect in fediverse posts? its small and niche, it feels like a safe corner of a clubhouse, but its the internet, we need to remind our users that stuff isnt confidential and even that "disappearing" posts is only really cosmetic.

@Fedilab Apps That reminds me - is there a FEP that extends the permissions system to make it granular per site? That would have solved one of the main concerns of people with your index (wanting to be searchable, but also wanting to limit which databases have the permission to index them and being able to revoke that permission retroactively)
Not sure if I see this as good or bad. My 2 cents: You might be the only one who is respecting any flag at the fediverse. I'm pretty sure big tech is scraping everything they can get from the fediverse.
From what I can see, you seem to be very aware of feedback and respectful towards user preferences, so here's my word of support. Even if your offered solutions sometimes do not persist, your heart is in the right place.
I found it because it quotes me from another publication without so much as hyperlinking the original. Articles on Medium, LinkedIn posts, news and features, everything is AI-generated now. I have stopped visiting these sites.
You truly realize the extend of the problem when you look for articles mentioning yourself or your projects. We develop a Linux distribution called TROMjaro and these days most of the articles we come across mentioning our project is AI generated, sometimes a differently phrased rewrite of previous articles.

A good news: G.Skill accepted the warranty return, and sending new ones. The bad news: they wanted the 'couple' of RAM stick I bought at that time, so I'm returning 16GB, and run right now with only 16GB. For real; it's ok: with a little RAM monitor on my systray bar, it's to start to close things when consumption is too high.
Oh yes, the cauldrons use way more resources 😺 I need to show this as well. 😊

Hehehe, yes, I know what you mean. There's a flaw in my motherboard that only lets me use two sticks out of four, so I'm stuck with 16 GB, too It's doable, but when my client wants me to do huge formats, it's impossible.

I had to do a lot of research to find out how I could mask away that defective RAM.

I think that it's safe to say that you will run memtest much sooner next time.
(Incidentally, I have a terminal window in which I'm running “dmesg -Tw”. It's occasionally VERY useful.)

Aussi, le thème du remplacement du travailleur par l'IA est difficile à aborder. Ce que j'ai retenu dernièrement de certaines lecture de papiers, d'articles et de stats, c'est que ce n'est pas le cas: mais que l'idée est utilisé comme prétexte pour virer des effectifs.

Mais c'est un travail sans compétence : avec les erreurs qui montrent qu'il n'y a aucune compréhension, que c'est juste du contenu recraché après une bouillie statistique, que c'est non fiable.
