TROMjaro 12.08.2023 (big update, many changes) forum.tromjaro.com/t/tromjaro-…

If people think that TROMjaro is "just another distro" then they don't know what they are talking about. Here's a sample of what we pushed recently to make the desktop experience better than most "distros" that I know, perhaps there is none that deals with theming and HiDPI, and fonts, and consistency and more in a better way than TROMjaro.

You know I watched one of the latest videos from @Nick @ The Linux Experiment where he talks about theming the Flatpaks. So complicated for the average user. Guess what!? We do it better and automatically, and we also sync GTK with QT, and fonts, and icons. If only more people would take a serious look at TROMjaro and by all means use the changes we made for your distro!

Give TROMjaro a try ;)

Tomorrow we will release a cool new TROMjaro ISO :) - if I team with @Rokosun and @Roma we create cool shit :) - you'll see.

Also, am working on the ZDay presentation. So far so good. I LOVE the LibreOffice Presentation. So bloody cool. I will send a newsletter about the ZDay event tomorrow or the day after. I was waiting for the organizers to send me the official "promo" for me....but they are busy with personal stuff so I would send a newsletter even without that. It is fine, just that on their website zeitgeistmovement.cz/2023/07/1… that leads to a FB event for ZDay my name is not listed, so some people may think that it is not confirmed. But it is.

Anyway, all good :)

The TROM II Documentary is by far the most complex, long lasting, and important project I ever created and maybe I will ever create tromsite.com/documentaries/tro… - 3 years to make. A massive work. And I am so happy with the end result, I feel like I can retire now :).

But I will do the opposite and continue to create more stuff.

Anyway, if anyone has any interest in what I do, then I cannot recommend this documentary enough! #tromstuff

Thanks! XFCE is terrible looking as default, and it has a lot of other inconsistencies in regards to theming and working with QT apps. We fixed many things. For example the system theming is now used by all GTK apps, including libadwaita, byt all QT apps, and even by all GTK flatpaks, even those using libadwaita. Same is the case for icons and fonts. Consistency.

Plus many changes in the background to make things more simple and easy to use.

I will detail the changes in the release post.

@avi917 If you don't care about clean code and just want something to get done then maybe AI works for you, its success rate depends on the complexity/uniqueness of the task you wanna get done, in the worst case scenario it can give you harmful code - tho it's statistically less likely to happen. The fact that you had to go through this tedious process of back and forth to get your code working is why I said it's like rolling a dice - again and again until it finally works.
in reply to Rokosun

yea, agree.. and with time it gets luckier and luckier.. :)

Working very hard on TROMjaro these days. We want to make it a bit better visually and in terms of consistency and fix some bugs. The Layout and Theme switchers are getting some improvements. I hope to be done in less than 7-10 days to then have time for my ZDay presentation preparation. ;)

I will share more about the ZDay, is just that I was busy with TROMjaro. #tromstuff

I am working on a TROMjaro visual revamp. The focus: usability and being clean and intuitive. We will work on a welcome screen too and hopefully integrate a bunch of cool stuff into it. I want TROMjaro to be very easy to use and for that we need more improvements...

Its good to see the big pharma getting more scrutiny from a comparatively more mainstream/reputable media like DW, this may encourage more scientists and researchers to speak up about these problems and voice their concerns.

news for chrome users.....stop using chrome or browsers based on chrome
in reply to Rotfarm

I agree. Unfortunately there aren't many alternatives. I use Firefox for many years now, but except that, what are other options that are not Chromium dependent or dependent on Firefox who receives a lot of money from Google?

I just didnt want to say "use firefox" but Oprah?
in reply to Rotfarm

Opera is a multi-platform web browser developed by its namesake company Opera.[11][12][13] The browser is based on Chromium, but distinguishes itself from other Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, etc.) through its user interface and other features.

in reply to Rotfarm

@rotfarm my knowledge about this is very limited, but from what I understand Google is proposing a method for web developers to verify the integrity of users who visit their websites, so if this proposal becomes a success and people started implementing this verification on their websites then you won't be able to access those sites from firefox, unless firefox also implemented this thing in their browser.

I really hope I'm wrong here and that it won't affect firefox users.....

in reply to Aral Balkan

@aral @rotfarm Maybe organizations like EFF would fight against this, that's my only hope now. If you actually think about it what Google is doing here is also anticompetitive in nature, other web browsers should be given the choice to not implement their design, but how can that be with a verification system like this being put on websites we visit.

Rokosun reshared this.

in reply to Tio

@rotfarm Where “a lot of” = ~half a billion dollars every year = if Google stopped paying them tomorrow, they’d be bankrupt the next day = totally dependent on Google for their existence.
in reply to Aral Balkan

@aral so an important question here that needs to be asked......if there is an absance of alternatives, why aren't people making them? Is it defeatism? No profit? This doesn't seem to stop most FOSS projects from being made, so why not make a web browser?
in reply to Rotfarm

@rotfarm A web browser is a huge undertaking. No reason why the EU couldn’t fund an independent organisation to make one, though. (Apart from lack of political will and a myopic insistence on framing everything through the lens of “The Single Market.”)
in reply to Tio

Webkit browsers. Epiphany, Midori, Safari...

Edit: apparently Midori is no longer among them, switched to Electron.

Our Teddit instance, like all others, is starting to feel the effect of the Reddit API limitation. It mostly does not work. Our Nitter now works, which is really cool. And Invidious was removed but I may bring it back on another server separate from trom.tf to not impact the IP. I'll wait to see if they find a fix for it, then I'll try it out.

Reddit, Twitter, Youtube....these ad-platforms that do not like when the content created by their users, not themselves, is accessed for free.

I started to write a book about The Internet. I wanted to write an article for my blog but this is a big topic and already I wrote a lot. It's been a few years since I wrote a book....and will see if it is a bit difficult to do so I'll post it as a blog post. But it will also be about the fediverse, alternatives, and why the Internet sucks so bad today. Will see but feel passionate to write about it. #tromstuff

I am not a developer. But I do help with testing and debugging as much as possible. I am confused by your first comments about "my identity" and such. But anyway. If you find any bugs please report them to Peertube's Github. I am doing the same. The developers are doing a ton of work and for the past months implemented a suite of wonderful features. You found a bug with the language filter, I suppose they should be interested to fix it if you report it.

Not much else to say. I just like Peertube and use it a lot. It works really great, but as with any piece of software it cannot be perfect.

in reply to Tio

I don't really have an account on Peertube specifically but I still follow some Peertube channels from my Mastodon account and also on the Newpipe mobile app. So while it may be true that Peertube lacks a bit in discoverability features (like the english filter not working), in my experience its pretty usable once you find some good channels to follow. And you don't even need a Peertube account for any of it, so its definitely a different experience than ytb.

in reply to Rokosun

@Rokosun @Tio @PeerTube @YunoHost That is true, its so close to being there for the average user, but still too far away to draw creators over.
in reply to anubis2814

@anubis2814
I agree getting creators over is the hard part, that is hard to do when most of them directly or indirectly depend on Google to make their money. But there are also creators like @tio who make good quality videos & even massive documentaries that he then just releases on Peertube for free, so for creators like that who don't do it for money this is a great platform (tho I know they're rare).
in reply to anubis2814

I do not see why "creators" would not use Peertube other than "they cannot make money there because they do not reach many people". As @Rokosun said I am primarily and for the past years only on Peertube. I have just released a 5 hours documentary only on Peertube. We have over 70 video casts there and hundreds of other videos. I do not see what would "prevent" me from using Peertube. It is so much faster, cleaner, and saner than youtube.

@anubis2814
Also Newpipe allows me to watch and subscribe to both YouTube and Peertube channels, which is pretty cool because then you get to make use of both platforms in one unified interface without sacrificing on either of them. So I guess an app like that is probably more appealing to casual users.

Man what an awesome documentary you made! 🙂 During my earliest days with this project I remember that donation campaign video you made for TROM II, at the time you expected it to only take 1 year for you to finish the work 😄 But you did a lot of other stuff during that time so I understand why it took so long, we even made some dramatic changes with TROMjaro to make it really unique and user friendly, so happy I was able to help you with all that :)
in reply to Rokosun

And in regards to the color correction for the documentary I kinda agree with the comment below that the interviews seemed strangely dim to me, I noticed it when first watching but then ignored it thinking it must've been a side-effect of that pitch black background - which I think is kinda true. I feel like a lot of your work would've been easier if you guys just used a green screen instead, that way you could just replace the green screen with a pitch black background during editing.
in reply to Rokosun

I will also try to promote this documentary whenever I can, to try to reach more curious minds around the world 🙂 For me even just watching some parts of it still gives me goosebumps, its that good! 😍
in reply to Rokosun

A greenscreen could not have worked. Would have looked unnatural.
in reply to Tio

Yeah maybe, IDK because I haven't done any video editing myself 🤷
in reply to Rokosun

Also this:

> Roko is doing a marathon screening of the documentary for his family.

I'm also kinda curious about diving and such, but I also probably have some kind of thalassophobia so IDK if I can do it, lol 😅 And reading how you almost had a panic attack doesn't make me feel any better, I've always had anxiety issues growing up.

And I hope to write more about TROM II, it is definitely one of the most fascinating and inspirational documentaries ever, it certainly deserves more attention than its receiving now.

in reply to Rokosun

Yeah well the thought that you have lots of water on top of you it is a bit tricky :D - however you have everything you need to be ok there underwater. If it wasnt for my stomach issues I would have been ok. It turns out I probably have GERD, which is one of the health issues they ask you about before you dive. If you have that you should not dive. Or do a special consultation with a doctor before. GERD is the inability of the stomach to close properly and the stomach acid goes out your food-pipe and you can get intoxicated (breath it) and that can fuck you up seriously. Plus it is uncomfortable as hell.

Anyway, the world under the water is so cool. I swear. I can close my eyes and imagine diving and it is such a great feeling to have. So doing it for real it is so bloody cool. I plan to dive more but need to see a doctor soonish.

These next days I'll be busy with some personal stuff. I am taking an Open Water course - I wanna see the underwater world a bit. So I won't have as much time to deal with the documentary release and such. I also need to learn for this course not only dive. But it only lasts for a week or so. After that I'll try to do a TROMcast and push the documentary more. I already emailed a few people/orgs. No answer, as usual. But is fine. The message is real and important so I'll keep on TROMing :)

So for the past year or so our Matrix server was not enable to help you recover your lost password. Therefore if you had an account with matrix.trom.tf and lost your password you were fucked. I am happy to say that this is finally fixed. I know, terrible thing, but it is fixed. I am also able now to access the admin backend and keep an eye on the users and delete any bots and such.

So all good!

In other news, we worked today to prepare everything for tomorrow's release. A few minor things to tweak but mostly all good.
