A new service added to TROM.tf - RDT https://rdt.trom.tf/ - A free and open source alternative Reddit front-end focused on privacy. No JavaScript or ads. Plus you can subscribe via RSS to any subreddits.
We are indexing a lot of websites for our Yacy decentralized search engine. A proper search engine that we integrated into our SearX instance at search.trom.tf. We want to make SearX a lot more relevant + add up to the decentralized search engine. We will index some 30-40GB of stuff, meaning a few million pages. We take the best sources from our own websites, tromnews, and the like. And test the search results and tweak them to make them better and better.
This is how I keep our servers/services in a good state, especially when it comes to trom.tf and its over 20 services:
I delay the updates that come from yunohost. Wait a few days before you update any app, just in case there is an issue with any update. Take a look at their github page to see if others complain :;)
Before I update any app or any package (system) I create a system snapshot. That means I can always restore even if I blow it all up.
Yunohost automatically creates a backup before updating any app. This is super handy.
I do daily backups to a remote server for all of our servers.
This way it is a lot less likely for me to break any website for long. I can pretty much always restore it. I learned from mistakes. Now I think our servers work quite well and are quite stable.

This video made me very sad. I alwyas thought about death and how fucked up it is to die. I do not want to. I am still young but death is something I will have to face, whether I like it or not. We are all in the process of dying. I wish this stupid society would be saner and we could focus on fighting aging. Cure it. Prolong it if not. We now have our own instance of Yacy. Yacy is a proper peer to peer search engine. You see, there are only a few search engines out there, maybe less than 10, and google dominates them all. Only google, microsoft, and a few others, can crawl the internet and provide relevant search results. They are giants and have big and fluffy servers.
We already provide a trade-free search engine at https://search.trom.tf - what this does is to use google and the like, to search whatever you want, and remove the trackers and ads, so you can see the results in a trade-free manner. But of course we rely 100% on other search engines. Not anymore!
With Yacy our server does its own indexing. It searchers on websites by itself. Thus decoupling it from any other search engine. It communicates with other Yacy servers/peers so together we can build a huge and decentralized search engine. But Yacy on its own is still limited. There are trillions and trillions of webpages out there. Ours will be able to index millions. This is why we have integrated it with https://search.trom.tf. And so, now when you search on https://search.trom.tf you'll also get results from our own search engine, Yacy.
The great part about is is that we are prioritizing the indexing of relevant websites, from tromsite.com to videoneat.com or directory.trade-free.org, or sources from tromnews.com. So that the first results will be a LOT more relevant.

yesish, i think it's on top of the kindle software like an app. but the kindle needs to be on a specific firmware, jailbroken etc. it's a lot easier on a kobo, according to the docs at least

I heard about PocketBook Touch HD 3. At least there is no need to register anywhere and you also don't need to use the manufacturer's cloud connestion. But I don't know much more.
On my old Kobo Reader (Kobo is already better than Kindle, because it uses epub format, I was easily able to install FOSS software on top of the default Kobo system, such that I never saw it. I haven't tried on the current one, because I haven't been bothered as much by the Kobo system. It may have been koreader that I used - See libhunt.com/topic/kobo. For transfering books to the Kobo I use Calibre. Many books can be found on pirate bay. For living authors I usually buy in parallel a paper version of the book to give away to friends. I noticed that there was a lecture on foss ereaders now in the LibrePlanet conference - I will wait to see if they release the recording.

This is primarily aimed at brand new users, with the goal of getting things to work in the most fool-proof manner possible, by simply unpacking a single ZIP archive in the root of your Kobo eReader over USB. To make this possible, these packages bundle KFMon.
For existing users, if you're happy with your current setup, by all means, carry on! . Launchers are, by design, mutually exclusive: between fmon & KFMon, only the one installed last will be active, but where KSM is concerned, KSM will always take precedence, so this is NOT designed for KSM users. If you're curious as to what this actually does to original KOreader/Plato packages, the gory details are all here!
Now that this is out of the way, on to the good stuff!
As mentioned earlier, the installation instructions are dead simple:1. Choose what you want to install: KOReader, Plato, or both, and download the appropriate ZIP from the listing below. 2. Plug your Kobo eReader to your computer over USB. 3. Directly extract the ZIP archive you've just downloaded to the root directory of your device (i.e., not under any subdirectory). (That's the "one click" bit ;p) NOTE: Prefer the "Extract To" approach (and allow replacing existing content if it's asked of you) vs. manually copy/pasting or drag'n dropping bits of the ZIP content yourself, as preserving the integrity of the directory structure and its contents is of paramount importance! 4. Eject & unplug your device. The Kobo software should then appear to be processing a book, before restarting to process an update. NOTE: If it doesn't attempt to reboot, that's a sure thing something went wrong in the previous step (hint: see the NOTE). 5. Once your device has finished rebooting, you should simply be able to tap on the KOReader or Plato icon in your Home or your Library to launch it!
NOTE: Something that bears repeating from KFMon's FAQ: a FW update will disable it, so you'll have to reinstall it after a FW update in order to be able to launch stuff again. You can either use these packages or the standalone KFMon package.

The complete useless notch on phones, just to make it "cool". Makes 0 sense. Cuts off videos, limits the design screen, makes no difference for the scrolling morons anyway. This together with removing the physical and useful buttons and making phones edge-to-edge making it difficult to even use them properly. Just some Apple and other such companies' nonsense.
The tampon earbuds that Apple somehow made popular. Easy to lose, really bad microphone quality, batteries that degrade over time, costly as fuck. Charge them!
And of course, the vertical idiots who film vertically.
If I see someone with an edge-to-edge screen + a notch, having wireless tampons and filming vertically, I'll push them off a cliff. :)

As someone who traveled around the world for many years, I do not consider myself to be “Russian” or “American” or Asian or European or whatever. I like to think of myself as a human being. Just that. Just like you.
I love different people and different cultures all over the world, but I hate politics, politicians, and patriotism. Politicians lie, cheat, and hurt people- all over the world. Politics and patriotism divide people.
Some people have been asking me, “as a ‘Russian’ and ‘American’”, what I think about the war in Ukraine.
I don’t have much to say other than it’s an atrocity. I think war, in general, is an atrocity.
War is the absolute most wasteful use of human lives and resources- ever. It shows that we, humans, are incapable of solving problems on a global scale. It shows that we resort to the most primitive measures: fighting. Exactly what we teach our children not to do.
So far, here are a few things that piss me off about this war:
• Thousands of humans have been killed. • Millions of humans have been displaced; their cities, homes, and lives have been ruined. • Bombs continue to be thrown in residential areas, even at hospitals, schools, theaters, airports, and places where civilians are seeking shelter. • As always, normal people that gain absolutely nothing from this power struggle are the ones who suffer the most. Those who gain anything (-if there is anything to gain from this) will hardly suffer at all. • Men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine- this should be as much a human rights violation as throwing bombs at civilians. No one should ever be forced to risk their own lives to fight for this or that nation. If they choose to fight, fine. If not, let them leave. • Speaking of that, in Russia, 18-year-old boys are forced to serve in the army- forced against their own will. And now they are forced to kill and die for some douchebag politicians. • People in Russia are getting arrested for protesting against the war. • People in Russia are getting arrested just for saying “war” or for holding a blank sign that says nothing. • Russia does not even call this a war, but a “special military intervention” and its media shows no pictures of the reality of this war, almost nothing about the millions of refugees that have fled Ukraine, and almost nothing about the death and destruction they’ve caused. Russian media and schools have been banned from referring to the war as an “invasion”, “attack”, or “war” and those who spread “fake news” about the war can get up to 15 years in prison. • People in Russia are fleeing because they are scared of their own government. • People in Ukraine are terrified because they are getting bombed. • Poor people around the world will suffer because of this war. Many developing countries depend on Russia and Ukraine for wheat imports (among other imports). Rising prices of food, fuel, and fertilizer can devastate countries that are already struggling.
This is the reality of war. It is barbaric and inhumane. It is the most inefficient and stupid way to solve problems. No sane ordinary humans want war. Not Ukrainians, nor the Russians. The only people that ever benefit from wars are the few rich and powerful motherfuckers at the top. And that’s what ordinary people die for.
To me, that is a sure sign of a flawed system.
War, I’d say, is a consequence of the structure of our society. Billions of humans are divided into many different tribes and are taught that they are different from one another; some tribes are friends, some are enemies. They are also taught that they should aim to get more and more- more stuff, more money, more power. This trade-based society gives a handful of powerful people the means to do that. They gain more and more wealth and power, then they exploit this power, using ordinary people as pawns to get what they want.
This trade-based society also pushes people to create and sell more weapons, rather than to look for a peaceful solution to problem solving. As a species, we should be ashamed that we have enough nuclear weapons to bring our own selves to extinction. What an idiocracy…
If we ever want a peaceful, intelligent society, we have to see ourselves as one human species. We have to organize ourselves in a way that puts humans (all humans) and the environment first. Not profit, not selling weapons, not taking territories, not trading this for that, not gaining power.
I know that we’ll probably never get there, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about it.
