With this update we are moving to a new and better theme, and we are solidifying our Layout Switch app to include several layouts. A new theme This is how TROMjaro looks like now: This is the first time we are changing the default theme.
I was unable to work on TROM II for the past weeks since Kdenlive doesn't work well anymore. But I work with the developers to find a fix. The project is too big...I will wait a few more days then I will have to see how to get back to it. Maybe I will split the project.
But I did a lot of work for TROMjaro. We will ship the next ISO with a bran new theme. More modern and sleek. And much better adapted for XFCE. Plus we will ship with 4 layouts:
And a graphical layout switcher so you can easily choose between them.
We will also push a fix for the stupidity of libadwaita. We will force the apps that use this library and break the system's consistency, to still use the system's theme. Thanks to @Future is FOSS !

So one super cool thing about Linux is that you can make your system look like one thing. Have your favorite theme applied to the entire system. Ofc this should be a normal thing, not a Linux specific thing. It is an awesome way to make an operating system fun, but also functional.

It does not respect the theme at all. It only has 1 button (close) and on the right side. If my theme has buttons on the left side, the white sheep don't care. This is the Touche app we use to setup the touchpad and touchscreen gestures, and recently they moved to the libadwaita library. This is something pushed by Gnome that says it will make the app developers' life easier in terms of creating apps for gnome. But that means app developers are enforcing 2 themes for all such apps. Light and Dark. And messing with the entire Linux ecosystem of theming and usability.
Problem is it seems we can't do anything about it and more and more Gnome apps will implement it. We use a bunch of gnome apps for TROMjaro and we may be forced to replace them.
Gnome stop transforming Linux into MacOS or Windows. The beauty of Linux is the many distros, the variations, the themes, the user experience, the fact that you feel that OS is yours....
Such a sad and stupid move.
Let me say it again: the apps should respect the system. If my system says "I want this theme" then the apps should respect that. If my system says "I want 3 window buttons on the left side" then the apps should respect that. Else we end up with a zoo of different apps looking and behaving in different ways. Gnome already broke the global menus and the top bar of apps. Instead of us having uniformity and usability, we get MacOS or Windows- And for what!?

If you measure the success of humans via a currency, then you are sadly lost. Reality is not close to you. Success should be in how many people have access to their basic needs for free; how much or little are humans stressed; their health, the state of biodiversity on this planet, the knowledge humans have about reality (from atoms to galaxies), how good they are with each other, how much free time they have, and so forth.
Relationships, trees and rivers, curiosity and exploration, helping others, better health and so forth, are real values. Trade gave rise to currencies, and currencies have value only inside of a trade system. Like a painting being more expensive than saving 1000 cancer patients, a car more expensive than an entire forest, and so forth.

There, from my perspective, is to a world where trade is obsolete. Meaning no currencies in any form or other trades. People's needs are met trade free and we rely mostly on "volunteers" for all aspects of our society. And I argue that this is not far fetched in the books above or in many at tromsite.com/books. We provide examples of how millions of volunteer humans are already the backbone of many parts of our society already, and so forth.
Of course that's not a scientific claim. I do not want or like to trade. Same as millions of people nowadays. And the rest are forced to. Our behavior comes from the environment we grow into. The better and more caring the env, the better and more caring the humans. The more competitive the env, the more competitive the humans. And so on.

Hi folks. I've been using various Linux distros since I was a kid and full-time (including for gaming) for the last few years. I was always inclined towards it for various reasons not the least of which is the ability to get things done quickly. Keyboard-shortcuts, scripts, etc. make my heart sing.
I'm now in my 30s and somehow I've gone my whole life without using a mac. I've never had one, my parents have never had one, and everyone I provide tech support to (it's inevitable isn't it?) has been on Windows. Then in 2021 I started a job that required encouraged everyone to use a macbook. I could choose not to but I thought, what the heck, this will be the year I learn macOS.
It went fine - I'm almost the resident expert now - but I've probably spent a combined few hours yelling at my screen.
Why am I posting here?
Well, learning macOS has given me a new appreciation for all the things Linux, Gnome, etc does right. There's a lot I'm newly thankful for. For example, alt + tab and alt + ` (backtick) exist and work as I expect every single time. Windows lacks alt + ` (backtick), and macOS's alt + tab eqivalent brings forward *all* the windows for that application not just the most recently one - clobbering whatever app I had on splitscreen. Oh, unless windows are minimized. Then it does nothing. It's infuriating.
The article I wrote has been popular with folks at my local tech meetup so I thought I'd share here. It's proven a source of laughter at the least.

I am stuck I can't work on TROM II because Kdenlive refuses to open my project. Waited for more than 10 hours...I will wait more. The Kdenlive team said they improved that and the way to test is to open my massive project with their latest appimage nightly build, then save the project and open again. But 10h in and still doesn't open...I will wait until tomorrow...what can I do!? #tromlive

Trying manyver.se - a neat scuttlebutt client! This is the proper way to go when it comes to connecting people. No servers, peer to peer. Still kinda experimental but that's one social network I am comfortable using 100%. It is me in control all the time. It is the next evolution form the Fediverse.
