For the past few days we managed to trigger the auto-transcription for thousands of our peertube videos videos.trom.tf - All of our TROMcasts, our TROM documentary snippets, all of our videos indeed and all of the VideoNeat trailers now have an English caption. While it is not perfect, it is impressively accurate considering that it is automated. @PeerTube is a real alternative to Youtube, in all regards.
Every new video that is going to be uploaded to our Peertube will have a caption from now on.
How do you make money with content posted on peertube? Not that that functionality is any good on YouTube, but it's functionality it has. It is ad-based on YouTube, so not trustworthy as far as I'm concerned. Does Peertube support that? If so, how?
There are plugins for Peertube as far as I know that enable such features. They are made by 3rd party devs. I would hate to see ads on Peertube and we will never enable that. In that sense peertube is not an alternative to youtube and I hope it stays this way.

I got your message but I think the last of goal of so much companies is sell to get money even if we mock the word money with trade at the end they need this trade to survive or don't sacrifice privileges.
It is true that most trades translate into "money" in today's society. But increasingly cryptocurrencies are getting more popular. However the focus should be on trade else we lose sight with whats happening online where data ant attention are traded without people realizing it.
The incentive is bad overall, from small to big companies, or individuals. Yes most have to trade to survive, and that is very bad and we should change this situation; it is also true that google and the like are not trading in order to survive, but to thrive in an unequal and ass backwards society.
Totally agree, Until the current situation that most of the companies use, for example, tracking methods to get your information only for improve the "sell experience for company". It's good saying "if it's free, you are the product" because if we don't keep alert or we pretend that they aren't the majority, we can't protect us of this kind of abuse
The entire premise of my original post is that it is not good saying "if it's free, you are the product" since for one it makes it seem like whatever is "free" is not to be trusted, and second it gives google and the like approval for using the word "free" for their trade-based services.
Google is trade-based. Facebook is trade-based. Nextcloud is trade-free. Friendica is trade-free.
I agree if it's free is not trusted, until the user figures out that is trust. I agree that not all the companies or products are evil or want to abuse to get money but the majority do it. Also there are thousands of user that don't know about the "trade" it's not a real trade if you don't know if it's a "trade"
Capitalism is a manifestation of trade, and ill defined for that matter.
As for "it's not trade if it's coerced" - we are mostly coerced to trade nowadays. Want food? Trade your time, energy, skills to someone else, get a currency, go trade it for food. Food is essential yet you have to trade for it, you have no other choice. And so it goes for pretty much anything.
You run a business selling food, you have little choice, you have to pay your rent. I need food. I work, make money, then buy food from you. We were both coerced into this game, now who is stealing from who in his situation?

That being said, these isms are a lot of mushy ideas. Also the theory of these ideas can be widely different from their implementation.
And by "no one forced anyone to do this or that", I do not know what you are saying. Of course so many people are forced by others or circumstances. All choices are influenced by external factors: needs, efficiency, fear, etc..
If not, then do yourself a favor and research. I was 100% sure that after billions of people made posts and videos, that people will believe that Google is a goddamn evil corporation. You can't trust it with your data unless you're insane and you want Google to know everything about you.

You certainly misunderstood. I did not justify what they are doing, I said what they do is not free to begin with, it is trade-based. This cuts the confusion when people think google and the like are free, and when some say "you are the product". Better say google is trade-based.
I dedicated the past 10+ years showcasing how this is fucked up. How trade is the origin of most problems.

@CyborgHT When there is no ads and no tracking, you arn't the product. Why not install #Yunohost at home or in a VPS? It's easy to install. Yunohost.org And there is many apps available by one click.

@LautreG OK, I agree with you, but disagree with original author. Yes Google isn't privacy-friendly. That has been proved in many cases, articles and videos. Yet people refuse to believe this.

Now you can see what's going on on the network, maybe to convince you to join :). It took a lot of CSS and HMTL gymnastics to achieve this. From my tests on desktop with mobile emulators all looks good on mobile, but for some reason when I check it on my phone it does not look as it should....I shall investigate.

And made our TROM Call, Jitsi Meet, more reliable.
Lastly we spent many days trying to figure out how to make our Peertube Live work better. Hours of tests, lots of logs. Hopefully we can make it more reliable.

A big thank you to the anonymous donor who sent 500 Euros for @Rokosun to buy a laptop. Roko has been helping with our TROM projects for a while now. TROMjaro would not be possible the way it is now without him. He is the one coding our layout and theme switchers and a lot more.
Roko got TROM's "legacy" laptop a year ago :) but unfortunately the motherboard died :(. So he ended up using an old laptop that barely worked. He could barely test stuff for TROMjaro. So he really needed a good machine.
Now he will buy one and will be able to more easily help with the TROM project. We have a lot of plans! Follow us on the fediverse ;)

Youtube is doing its best and most aggressive lately to protect their ad platform. Third party services that allow you to watch youtube videos without ads or being tracked are suffering. Invidious, Newpipe, Freetube and the like.
Now Peertube is being affected and users cannot synchronize their youtube account with their peertube one. Basically a peertube instance has an IP, and google sees that this IP is trying to grab videos from their ad platform. So they blacklist the IP. Unfortunately we can't do much.
Nothing will change until we are brave enough to move to peertube entirely or similar platforms.
Therefore our videos.trom.tf/ is currently unable to import videos from youtube. And we may not be able to fix this.
yeah I have the same problem as well. I'm on #peertube and other platforms like #Odysee and #rumble ( And yes I know it's an conservative platform but last time I checked their money is the same as everyone else). The downside is convincing everyone else to move on to other platforms. We need to convince people to get off of YouTube (when I mean get off of YouTube, I mean content creators) and move to other platforms. That's where we have to focus on
Well most people wont do that unfortunately. Ask @TILvids he should know better. It is hard to even make the "creators" who want to also put their videos on peertube do that. The video import feature created no friction and thus a lot more people were willing to use peertube,
For our TROM project we always prioritize peertube, videos.trom.tf/c/trom/videos - unfortunately that made our videos kinda invisible. But I dont care anymore....fuck ad-tube.
I suppose they just blacklist the entire subnet so /64... Seems ...excessive? And then if your ISP delegates you some prefixes you can swap that a bit... Idk

Youtube is doing its best to not run a free video hosting service because video hosting is EXPENSIVE.

Every time I use peertube I'm reminded why the existing solutions exist: video hosting is hard and expensive, and if you want it to work well you need a global CDN at a minimum. And your data needs to be hosted on mulitple continents so the backhaul to the origin isn't painful.
I tried to use the Peertube hosted by @jerry the other day and I took forever for a video to even start playing. I don't have a lot of confidence this is a problem we'll solve, at least not in a way that gives us an equal experience as we get when using the centralized platforms. Maybe in 10 years.

We run an instance. videos.trom.tf/ 1,381 users, 2,622 videos, 972.2 GB. We pay some 20 euros a month. With p2p the bandwidth can be shared. Peertube runners allow you to use peopleΕ computers for transcoding. It is doable.
