Mastodon character limit is such a weird concept and useless and pointless I can't believe is still there. People who want to say more than a paragraph need to split it into "threads"...insane!
Look:
How the fuck you get to read and interact with a post divided into tens of comments.....
This is silly as fuck people.
If you have no character limit, guess what, you can still make short posts. But not vice-versa.
It is beyond me why this is still a thing in 2025. Artificial limitations.
Man I LOVE Friendica! A proper way to make posts and interact with people. And yet not many are aware of Friendica and how awesome it is.
@Meredith Whittaker you should either move to a Mastodon instance without character limitation or try Friendca. You can even use our node social.trom.tf - and that's for anyone else who is bothered by this artificial limitation of Mastodon.

@lps I think weβre on the 5TB tier. Yeah, itβs a bit expensive, but it gives us some room to grow. Definitely look around and compare services!
One thing that we do with onboarding new users is to point them towards our OpenCollective page, which helps offset the cost significantly. Itβll become more of a headache as the instance gets bigger, but Object Storage solved a lot of long-term problems for us.

Yes that is communication because it showcases the big issue with these LLMs, registrations for these platforms, and perhaps how not to write your bio. This is why I am leaving the post up and added an edit to it. That is for sure an important discussion to have.
If I knew this person is not an LLM of course I would have contacted them. When I made their ID public was for others to be aware of that LLM account - since that is what it looked like.
So yes, I think I reacted in a relevant way to what has happened.
This post's thesis is only valid if "these people" are indeed invading your instance with LLMs, which you now know isn't what happened here. Imagine if someone publicly called you out by name and accused you of something you didn't do. And then kept it up even after confirming that you didn't do it.
This is like me posting "Everyone look out for people trying to get into your houses! Tio just tried to pick my lock (dummy just tried to use some other house's key lol) and then looked around to see if I hid a spare key anywhere... Scary times we live in! Edit: Okay, turns out that they weren't trying to get into my house, they were trying to visit their friend who has an identical house one street down from me."
What would be the point of me leaving this post up?
Perfectly reasonable to leave that post up. You clarify that Tio didnt want to break into your house. Good job! Removing that post after some have shared and seen it, is worse in my opinion. Those people may really think Tio tried to break into your house.
But my post is a lot more relevant because there are comments/discussions around it that are relevant, including this one.
The user has such a weird bio that it will be for sure mistaken with a bot (LLM). So maybe others should get to see this and perhaps think twice before creating a bio where they "joke" about being a robot and an LLM.

Big thanks to the 200 Euro anonymous donation! Much much appreciated! tromsite.com/donate
We still have an ongoing fundraiser for our backups - gofundme.com/f/paying-for-the-β¦ - we need 40 more Euros. While we can, and we will use some of the money from the latest donation for it in case we do not raise it all, it would be much appreciated if the people who use our services can help us pay for the backups.
Our instances of Friendica, Peertube, Nextcloud, Matrix and more, are used by hundreds if not thousands of people. We are backing up all of their data in the cloud. So please help if you can.
Thanks!

It is a delight to see people registering to our Friendica almost daily.
And yes these are not bots. Since we "force" anyone who register to tell us why they want to be part of our network (to filter out the bots), I can tell that those who register are not garbage pieces of "AI", but real and interesting humans who are also interested in our TROM project.
Just wonderful! :)
Our platform is a home for anyone who wants to join, granted they don't use it to abuse others or only use it as an ad platform to promote whatever they sell. So basic decency ;).

Since I am being asked these days about this and see others wondering, we can setup instances of Mastodon, Friendica, Pixelfed, Peertube and a lot more for a cost, in order to support our trade-free projects and instances.
We do it via WebApe.site - prices range from 30 Euros a month. We do everything: set up any instance, update, and all that. No need to worry about any of it.

I agree that Peertube loses something good about centralization: a way to search the entire Peertube network. I think joinpeertube.org/browse-conten⦠does that well tho. And every instance can enable global searches like we do with videos.trom.tf - tho this is a general issue with decentralization and even these global searches will not search through all of the content.
One server needs to discover another and its contents in order to be aware of them. But this technology I think is still in its early stages and looking at how much Peertube evolved over the past 2-3 years it gives me hope that there will be better solutions for this.
I like the idea of grayjay.app/ where you are following "creators" and not channels. Can be Youtube, Peertube, or whatever. The fediverse needs to be integrated with the other platforms like this through some sort of app maybe....
PeerTube's own Sepia Search is trying to cover having a single search system in one place. It uses a blocklist system to screen out bad content when it's reported.
I'm trying to do my own single place to discover content at fedi.video but using an allowlist system instead, so I only allow accounts to appear on the site if I manually approve them.
These are the two ways of providing a unified search for discovery, I think there's a place for both?
How awesome that on the fediverse you can follow our Peertube TROMhome channel directly via tromhome@videos.trom.tf - no need to have any Peertube account. Follow it from your Friendica, Mastodon, or whatever network you are using.
This is light years ahead of the BS of Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and the like, who are islands of ads, controlled by a few rich people.
Thank you to everyone who works on making the fediverse as great as it is!

When I post a photo on my Pixelfed account it automatically goes to my Friendica account, and then also to our TROMnews Photos :) - the power of activitipub and RSS. That's how the internet should be!

Updated Friendica to the latest stable. Everything seems fine. Merged into Yunohost github.com/YunoHost-Apps/frienβ¦ - now I am one of the maintainers so that's good, I'll try to keep the package up to date. However we need help with this issue - github.com/YunoHost-Apps/frienβ¦

We provide Mastodon/Peertube/Nextcloud/Friendica and more, as a service. For a cost. Just order and have your own instance, no headaches.
I always do trade-free stuff, but since I am trapped in this trade-system and I do not get enough financial support via the projects that I do, I have to also trade a bit.
WebApe webape.site/ is what I do to trade. Basically we create websites, install Mastodon/Friendica instances, Peertube, Nextcloud, etc.. We setup, manage, update, customize.
We try to do something decent and make some money with that, to then support our free projects.
So if you want a Mastodon instance for example, or any other website/service, please see webape.site/. I have lowered the prices now, so a Mastodon instance starts at 30 Euros per month.
We will take a limited amount of websites so to not overwhelm ourselves.
Please share if you think others might be interested. In a way, we can make the fediverse more known and accessible via the WebServices that we provide.

"if an admin can extend the post size limit in Mastodon then that's a cool feature"
I learned it is not a feature to extend post size limit in Mastodon, but a hardcoded value in code, which is very difficult to change depending on deployment method, but possible. They should make this a feature.
And talking about friendica, it looks outdated (the original theme), which does not provide overall confidence, if comparing to new highly extensible, innovative and beautiful bonfire (for example, a flavor of it for scientists: openscience.network/)

in reply to Tio • • •the Mastodon instance can configure the character limit to be longer. It is so annoying to tell people who have never tried Mastodon before that you should check the character limits on the instance you choose to join because that could make your life easier or harder if you like writing long posts. Yet another inconsistency that people have to be aware about which complicates use of the software.
The Mastodon software should have a million character limit and instead offer a separate window in which to view long posts, and otherwise only show the first paragraph by default.

e.g. following & posting "live" to hashtags like #Monsterdon while watching a film
I asked #Mastodon if #Fediverse platforms like #Friendica, #Sharkey were suitable for that but didn't get an answer
I created a Sharkey account & found out no, no good for watch parties (you can put hashtags in "antennas" but that only gives you a tiny, random-seeming selection of posts with the tags)
What about Friendica?
