The "star of the show" is a Dell Inspiron 7620 2-in-1.
So my laptop battery dropped 10% more in 2 days?
That seems a bit extreme....So I did notice a drop in the battery performance over the past week or so. I used to be able to run it on battery for some 10 hours when watching local media, some 5-6 hours when using it normally over wifi, bluetooth, streaming, even doing some photo editing and such. Even with full brightness on in broad daylight doing stuff over wifi I could use it for some 5 hours.
Now? It's 4 or so hours when using it "normally". Dropped 1-2 hours on average. This is a bit extreme.
I wonder why...
For one this laptop is kinda hot most of the time. I have lots of things opened. So the temperature of the CPU/GPU is around 60-70 degrees on average. The laptop can be so hot it is uncomfortable to use it.
Second, I have charged this laptop via a USB-

For one this laptop is kinda hot most of the time. I have lots of things opened. So the temperature of the CPU/GPU is around 60-70 degrees on average. The laptop can be so hot it is uncomfortable to use it.
Second, I have charged this laptop via a USB-C dock that delivers 60W to the laptop, while normally the charger delivers 65W. I've read that this should not impact the battery life, but idk....
Lastly, these stats about the total capacity of the battery cannot be that exact....it dropped 10% after I rebooted the laptop, but I normally only reboot it once a month or less, so maybe it showed the 93% capacity wrongly for the past month or more.
Anyway, if I would complain about this laptop I'd say:
- gets very hot
- the battery seems to lose capacity super fast
- the chassis of the laptop is "too sharp", more than you imagine, making it uncomfortable to handle; that chassis is also a bit bendy...makes some noises when you handle the laptop
- it is kinda heavy overall
- you have to solder something inside your laptop to make your trackpad work
- repairable on paper, but kinda terrible in practice...not comfortable to open this laptop and replace stuff
But hey, I still like it....is kinda thin, powerful, dual RAM slots, 4TB of SSD, amazing screen, good keyboard, great trackpad after you make it work; great port selection, good webcam, and the build quality is still quite good overall.
But fuck, I hate that the battery is getting so bad suddenly...
I ordered a laptop fan stand, to put my laptop on while I'm on my desk...and I'll try to charge it with a more powerful charger. I know there are "good practices" to preserve the battery like only keep it charged between 20% to 80% and so forth....but what's the point of having a laptop if I have to do it like that? I want to use this thing in a way that is comfortable for me.
Anyway. It is what it is....
This week I will release the documentary so I'll focus on that.
Fuck you battery! You cunt!

Have you issues using it?
I know there are some scaling issues, i'm working on it (but not easy to investigate, as i have few feedbacks, and I can't make stress tests alone, my computer can only simulate 50 connections)

in reply to John Livingston • • •@John_Livingston first of all, position of life chat
Average 16:9 video on average 16:9 screen just doesn't leave enough place for comfort chatting
Second issue I remember: on unstable connection chat frequently resets itself and loads again from scratch, it's just takes too long (little faster if you're logged in, but that's not always possible)
I recommended you to look on @owncast implementation, their chat is really good

I agree.
I had some technical difficulties to improve this. For now, the chat is in an iframe (I don't know your background, sorry if it is too technical).
This implies that I have little control on this.
I tried to get rid of the iframe several months ago. But I had issues with the AngularJS framework used by Peertube. It has some annoying side effects.

So i postponed this dev. But I need to do it for some upcoming tasks. And once it is done, it will be simpler to position the chat (and even add an option for a floating chat window).
Sorry for the inconvenience. Not easy to work alone on such a project, when we must spend the majority of his time to search for funding. But good, news (and spoiler alert), i found someone to help me on the project!
