I wish Manyverse would take off - manyver.se/ - 100% decentralized social network based on scuttlebutt.

After I release TROM II I will try, little by little, to fully migrate to these decentralized platforms like Scuttlebutt and Tox for messaging. We really need that and not servers and centralization.

The Fediverse and Matrix, are great for now. But they are what I like to call as decentralized centralization. Several servers instead of 1. And only a few have most of the users, thus have immense control over the entire network.

Yes I use Syncthing a lot. It is my main file sharing tool. I also use Bittorrent a lot for al of my media needs. Tox seems to be one great network for messaging that I will try to switch over to maybe next year.

Messengers like Tox doesn't require you to join a server and you can start connecting with friends right away, but when I installed Manyverse on my phone its asking me to join a room/pub server to connect with people. I think a truly decentralized p2p app should at least allow us to connect directly with friends, like how Tox does it, no need to go and find a server for yourself. Having servers in the network is not a big issue, but we shouldn't be completely reliant on it.

There are also some practical issues with the way scuttlebutt works. In it everyone has to store everyone else's data on their device, this can take up a lot of storage space, but it also means that there's no reliable way for you to delete or edit your message, something which I think is an essential feature these days. It'd be a lot better if only you store your data in your own device and also sync it with your current home server (so that others can view your posts when you're offline). @Twann :artix: :nonbinary_flag: also brought up an important point, all of these p2p apps should at least give us an option to use a... 100%! This was my main criticism of the scuttlebutt project that you have to join these "pubs". It is better than how the fediverse works but it will still concentrate power into big pubs that can refuse you if the admin wishes to.

I also wish these kinds of things would take off. Part of me wants it to be easy for all of my existing friends to join up, and another part wants to make new friends of the sort who would be interested in doing the work to make this stuff work. Quite the tension!

Thanks, I thought so too at the time :) But we also needed to integrate it more closely than just running it as a separate process and Jakob was initially involved so I thought we could do that but he decided he wanted to concentrate on Syncthing alone (fair enough) so we never managed to move beyond a certain point. The experience taught me a lot about having control over your core tech & my eventual disillusionment with Apple paved the way for the small web work.

Yeah, but if you sync your social media posts via bittorrent across millions of peers then you won't be able to edit or delete your post, we need the opposite of this, to keep your posts in your own device and maybe also a server of your choosing (so that people can access your posts when you're offline). Bittorrent is good for sharing media, but won't work well for a social media.

Really interesting presentation and you are very good at making these presentations very fun to watch. I was pleasantly surprised by how you showcased the interface for Heardbeat. Unique. And your analogy with the bullshit tree is so to the point and funny. I loved it. I made a simialr analogy in my book The Origin of Most Problems where I argued actually that we cannot throw seeds on an infertile soil and expect good things to grow out of it. You need a proper soil to plant seeds and I describe how that "soil" should look like. Funny enough I think it combines very well with your analogy because in order for us to plant a new sort of tree we need to have the conditions for it, like support to develop such alternative platforms and programs. Else the seed cannot grow into a tree.

I am quite sure bittorrent and the new torrent files are now editable by the "owner" of them. You can look it up but am pretty sure that's the new way and works. Plus you have something like the DAT network that was experimental in this regards and worked like that with edits being pushed by the owner of files. Basically they showcased you can have dynamic websites that are fully p2p.

In my experience with talking to people, P2P is a bit confusing. They either confuse it for client-queue-client or think of something like BitTorrent or perhaps I2P. I think F2F is a more precise term that describes a very specific type of P2P: wikiless.northboot.xyz/wiki/Fr…

Also, it really does look to me that decentralization is the same kind of buzzword as "cloud computing" nowadays, grouping together F2F, BitTorrent, federation, blockchain and Web3 (which is a bunch of closed-off prisons built on proprietary technology). It's almost as if these terms are deliberately used to muddy the waters.

F2F works for social media contexts, but I'd like to have P2P rather than client/server as a software architecture core design principle, for many more contexts, to try and recover (conquer?) the notion of cloud as a user-beneficial rather than user-exploitative concept.

First time I hear of Friend to Friend....interesting. I tested Retroshare a lot in the past and I wanted to move all of my projects' work there but never really worked well for me. I think it is not maintained in some time now...a shame...

I think Retroshare and Scuttlebutt are fairly similar, Manyverse is just a client for Scuttlebutt. Similar to how Mastodon is the server back-end for accessing the Fediverse.

Yes I know, maybe I gave the wrong impression that Manyverse is a network while in fact it is a client for the scuttlebutt network. Same as Mastodon is for the fediverse.

So I kinda finished 50 minutes from the 3rd part of TROM II. But now I have to see how I continue. For that I need to go again through the first 2 parts of the documentary. I went through the first part today....difficult. I had to port it to the latest Kdenlive and fix a bunch of things + color correct all interviews footage. I will render it overnight to check it in full resolution tomorrow and prob fix more things for it. Then do it again for the second part. Then re-watch them + the first 50 minutes of the 3rd part and figure how to continue....

But tomorrow I'll also try to release a new TROMjaro ISO....

So a bit of work these days.

I am personally not happy to see the fediverse conglomerating around a few huge instances. The growth here means a few people are in control of a vast chunk of the network. A decentralized network is the future. Like Scuttlebutt or the like. No servers, no admins, works better the more people that join since there are more nodes. Similar to the Bittorrent network. That's what I'd like to see. Locally, so you have your own identity that no one can temper with.

That's a future I want to see for "social networks".

The past months Kdenlive releases have been kinda buggy. That needs to be said. Crashed for me several times, crashed for @Sasha ... at least the good thing is that you can easily re-open and recover your project. The text tool is buggy.

I'm not used to do this, but with the large influx of new users and node admins recently coming from #Twitter, our small team is now behind the curve for handling support requests, bug reports and bring about much-needed features.
The project is built on a #PHP / #MySQL platform, but we also need people to be able to assist others just using the software to give developers some space.

2 packages are holding back another TROMjaro ISO release....they were in the Chaotic AUR but later removed. I will wait 1-2 more days to see if they will be added back (I contacted them about that) if not I will try to package them for TROMjaro's repo.

Friendica fact of the day: you can follow pretty much any website out there, including youtube channels, twitter feeds, you name it. All via RSS. So find the RSS address of any website (usually they link to that on the website) and paste it into the contacts form where you normally add contacts. Then follow.

You can also use a trade-free service like rss.trom.tf/ to grab the RSS for those that have none.

So, join us via social.trom.tf :) and follow any RSS source. Easy.

My university didn't have an RSS address or any other way of notifying people they uploaded some vital info that could get people banished if they didn't read it.
I remember I made a feed for myself via some website that allowed me to select which parts of the website should be monitored, and used a discord bot to notify me if something new was uploaded, with a photo, title, description and link ^^
RSS is a valuable little piece of technology

I tried to update Friendica to the latest stable today, but the @YunoHost package for Friendica pulled the development version of Friendica instead of the stable one. I reported it here github.com/YunoHost-Apps/frien… - there is a mistake somewhere....but we can't afford to run the dev branch for our 900 or so users. I will try again later on when this is fixed. For now it is all good, I have restored a server snapshot.

Finished 47 or so minutes of the TROM II, 3rd part. Fast! These days I will for sure finish some 50-55 minutes. After that I need to work on some very important 30 or so minutes and reorganize them a bit then edit heavily. That's the last part of this 3rd one. So that's quite challenging....

Nice article by @Cory Doctorow's linkblog pluralistic.net/2022/11/13/gra… - I too am tempted by the framework laptop. Yes it does not have a dedicated GPU. Yes the screen is kinda small if you want to do video editing, tho I have an external monitor already. But to be able to bloody replace pretty much any part of your laptop, yourself, is bliss. Like he was explaining how he dropped his laptop and destroyed his screen, to then simply order a new screen and replace it himself. Beautiful!

Tomorrow I will 100% finish the first 40 minutes of the TROM II documentary, part 3 of it. So fast! Awesome! Basically I am almost done with those 40 minutes. Only need to work for an hour or so to finish it. After that I will probably be able to finish the next 10 minutes or more this month. But the rest is a bit unknown and needs some serious work. In any case, am doing it much faster it seems. And so far I love it. #tromlive

I'm currently using #Fedilab (fedilab.app). It has its issues, but the developer is interested in improving Friendica support, so you can report bugs and they're quick to fix it.

Here's my "adventure" with Sasha :D - for just 2 days out of 60 hahaha. Look....I had work to do on TROM okay!? Had to go back, ok!? haha. No but I didn't even plan for going with her at all of course. It was her adventure. I just joined for the first 2-3 days. From now on the videos are getting better and better.

Oh and we used a big camera to film for these 2-3 days and the settings were all messed up so the quality is not good at all. But is just this video.

Sasha, the girl who I feel was born out of nature, like a tree gave birth to her because she loves nature so much. :)

So you're saying this laptop is very well built. idk sounds tempting :D - the main thing bothers me is the small screen. I can't tell how small that is compared to mine. But yeah this laptop sounds like a unique one....to be able to replace pretty much everything is quite useful.

I think the most positive thing from the bird-migration lately is about those who knew about the fediverse but were reluctant to join. OR have joined and not used it much. Now they are like "Oh yeah man, this fediverse is awesome" when their bird-friends start moving over, or at least trying it.

Also, another reminder that mastodon is just ONE platform. There are lots of others. Personally I (again) recommend Friendica. This is what it can do and how it looks like trom.tf/social/ and here is our instance that's public social.trom.tf

I found another candidate for my future laptop TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 16 - Gen7

Super powerful processor, 16inch thin bezels display (smaller factor), ability to order without storage so I can buy it cheaply somewhere else, ability to choose between integrated GPU or dedicated, and seems very well built. All metal. Easy to replace the ram, storage, and battery.

Still super expensive but maybe I'll manage to save some money and I may do a donation campaign since 90% of my computer use is for TROM anyway :P - and a new one will help me be "mobile" and when I'll move next year. Anyway, I will stop with this obsession for now, and will get back to TROM II.

I've looked at that model too :smiling face with hearts: Good choice! Looks like a very solid device, not of the same level of modularity as the Framework laptop, but at least there are two slots of RAM, 2 slots for SDD to expand if necessary. No soldered RAM, SSD or any other bullshit, which happens to the laptops these days.. I would like to see AMD recent CPU+GPU more for these beasts though, but they are still outcompeted by Intel+NVIDIA.

I've heard tho that it has a plastic bezel on the front of the screen and it peels off at times.... :( - I want it all metal goddammit. :D - Yeah Framework is still tempting for me for how awesome it is in terms of repairability....idk what I'll choose in the end. But there are a few options for now at least.

Oh, that's unfortunate. Probably it's something you can solve with their support though, I've heard they are very helpful. Tbh, I've never seen a laptop with the metal bezel around the screen :thinking face: Even fancy overpriced full metal body macbooks don't have it.

Yeah perhaps that's what I also used in the tutorial but didn't work in Manjaro, hard to explain now. But since I fixed the issue by pushing an older version of the package to our repo.
